I don't see anything that unusual here -
but I haven't seen Golden Spike or Night Train
play this year. Obviously, there's going to be
more interesting stuff going on this year than
last in the 5-7 range thanks to shazam returning
and Salt Lake (nee persuader) reappearing.
Rumor has it that CTR is back at strength but
all they have to prove this is Kleinman. Last year,
it seemed fairly clear that there were 4 natties teams,
and a drop off after that. Inter-regional results
could indicate that golden spike and CTR
might be competetive (in the sense of - maybe
not make pre-quarts, but maybe wouldn't lose
all their games at natties?), and maybe, as
a squeaker, the horde.
the horde could be a spoiler against 4-6, but
winning three tough games in a row on sunday
doesn't seem likely. in terms of maintaining
the strength bid - i'd like to see the top four
seeds go.
but what do i know. i didn't see labour day.
natties seeding is interesting - let's hope that
one of the big three doesn't slip because that
would screw things up significantly. barring
a slip - 3/4 top seeds NW? i think so.
1-SHAZBOT'S REVENGE
At first I was thinking their symbol looked like the Flash. Then I
remembered it was the whole Captain Marvel looking like Flash
already. I was trying to come up with a funny nickname for the rest
of this, like Huckleberry Finn, or Doctor Finn Medicine Woman, but
everything I came up with was lame. So I'll just stick with a
comparison: Steve Finn is the Ron Harper of ultimate. He's a glue guy
who knows one thing. Winning.
Bonus anecdote: Ron Harper went to my college, and when he was there
he was a poor student (not a dumb guy though) b/c of a learning
disability and a stuttering problem. One time near the end of his
college career he came in late busted into one of those big lecture
classes for freshman and yelled out "Who gots a stick of gum for
Ronnie Harper?" At the time all proud that he was overcoming his fear
of public speaking and genuinely interested in getting gum, but the
rest of the kids just turned back around and ignored him. This
crushed him and increased his perpetual shyness. My brother tells the
story that this tale of his youthful exuberance got back to Jordan
while they were both on the Bulls and Jordan used it as a method of
keeping Ronnie in his place as he was wont to do with all team mates
save Charles Oakley who would have just punched him out if he
belittled him. My point? My brother has a habit of embellishing
stories and Steve Finn is probably going to win nationals.
2-BRASS MONKEY
They have a dude on their team with size 1 billion feet. He's like
one of those flipit toys from the 70s. I had Underdog. It wasn't as
much fun as you'd think.
3-MISCHIEF
They should play BM 7-0, 0-7 offense decides. That would be awesome.
It would lend some illegitimacy to mixed since so many people think we
should be cancelled since guys are big and girls are small.
4-FLYCOONS
You gotta love a potential nationals team that has players introduce
themselves to each other at regionals. The other reason to like them
is I like to read Timmy's blog, not the parts where he pulls out that
boring ass Luke style "how much I ran four days ago" information, but
the parts where he talks about the team and describes his play on
every point. Mainly because he makes himself sound so horrible. I
get the impression he's not horrible at all.
The team should ditch the Zappa reference and go with Beastie Boys
though, like everyone else in the NW. I suggest Biz vs The Nuge.
5-THEE HWHORDE$HAQE
Changing your name for family friendly marketing at nationals is only
important for teams going to nationals.
6-CUT THE CHECK
Scouting report on these guys is make them turn it over more than they
want to. Because they don't like to turn it over.
7-NIGHTRIDERS
Confidential to Dougie:
That dude who kicked you once and then stormed off and threw his
cleats back onto the field is on Shazam now. You should cover him
again. Why did anyone else read this? I said it was confidential.
8-GOLDEN SPIKE
These guys could be at a huge advantage. Weather up north will
probably be pretty cold and since they will all be wearing special
underwear, they might be warmer than everyone else.
9-FAMILY STYLE
They're all old. And all young.
Not middle wise aged.
That will come to hurt them.
Or help them.
Not both.
10-BOZEMAN
I honestly had no idea you had a team. I actually had to look up
"Montana" on google to make sure it really was a state. Damn, it's a
big one too. I still stand by my political platform of abolishing all
states that aren't famous for anything, and combining all states that
describe themselves by geographical relation to the other similarly
named state.
11-SHADRACH
Finally a team that named themselves after the bible. Maybe Golden
Showers should have done this too, and then I would have ranked them
higher. Except Utah doesn't believe in the bible. They believe in
Bible Junior America Version 1.0. So never mind.
My favorite thing about Shadrach is they look like a nascar pit crew
with all the sponsorship stuff they got going on.
12-SCHADENFREUDE
I'm writing this post entirely for Bruce. Respect!
13-SHOTGUN (JETS)
Last year this team was only 19 points away from making it to
nationals. And they didn't get any worse, the competition just got
that much better. It's sort of the curse of the NW if they were in
any other region they could make it to the National Championships. As
long as that region were in France.
14-SLEEPEAZY
Back when I first found out about the internet I used it for the
forces of good. One of the first things I looked up was a picture of
Vicki, from Small Wonder. I wanted to email it to my friend who's
fiancé looked exactly like her. Except his fiancé was an adult, not a
preteen robot. I found a good picture on this guy's site.
http://wat.midco.net/jvipond/EasyBreather/
That's when I found out that the internet was weird, and it scared
me. Then I found porn and it calmed me. Then I found weird porn and
it scared me again. What a roller coaster 1998 was!
Anyway, this team has 4 guys who are really good players. They're
also pretty nice too. The gigantic dude who looks like one of those
ACC center stiffs who always gets drafted too high into the NBA and
then flames out in 2 years makes up the rules as he goes along
though. Watch out for that.
15-DENIAL
Instead of talking about Denial here, I'm going to break down the
numbers. 5 teams here are from the Bay. 5 from Oregon. 2 from
Washington. When you break down the quality, it looks like the Bay
and 1 Seattle team is running roughshod over us, but if you look up
the populations, there are only 3.7 million people in Oregon. There
are 7 million people in Washington, and 7.2 million people in the Bay
area alone. This is my scientific reason I am presenting ahead of
time as an excuse if the bottom 4 teams are from Oregon. Just like to
get that prepared ahead of time. Please ignore the fact that the
entire Big Sky section is the largest section in the country but has a
population of like 120 thousand people because that ruins my argument.
16-TEAM UNKNOWN
This team was white wedding, then it was the evil robot usses, now it
could be somebody else. Whoever it is, they're going to have to get
used to losing.
I was there. That was awesome.
I hope there are 16 teams this year. It's getting awfully close.
Actually, Timmy's usually right about his play in those blog posts.
He's only embellishing that running crap. I think he's trying to coast
on his workouts before he moved. He's really let himself go...I think
he's tipping the scales at triple digits!
I have no idea about the predictions, but I do say, Joe, that's some
funny shit.
Especially about the internets.
Stephen
DC Funk
FYI... for those of you readers from Seattle... Joe is not
MrPlayoffs... MrPlayoffs doffs his hat to an extremely well done post
and wishes he'd written it first!
