CLAIRE CHASTAIN FOR CALLAHAN

Claire might kill me for doing this, but this is my
(non-fancy-video) 2 cents on why I think she should win the
Callahan. For those who don't know her, Claire Chastain is
the 2 year Captain for UNCW, and also was a huge offensive
force on the Phoenix Women's Club team this past year. Any
who have seen her play notice how she dominates the game
both on offense and defense. Her vision of the field,
knowledge of the game, incredible throwing ability and shear
athleticism are evident upon watching her play. These
attributes have lead her to recently be featured as a Sky'd
All-American and in USA Ultimate's Starting 7. Despite the
achievement of these personal accolades, Claire is a humble
player dedicated to the sport and to being a leader of our
team. Claire and I both started playing ultimate our
freshman year of college, however in addition to her natural
athleticism, her passion, commitment and dedication to the
sport and the team have set her above both myself and many
who have been playing for the same time and longer. Since
freshman year, I've witness her working on her game
constantly outside of practice, embodying what I think Anson
Dorrance describes as, "The Vision of a Champion is someone
who is bent over, drenched in sweat, and the point of
exhaustion, when no one else is watching." This work ethic
beginning freshman year earned her FOTY for the AC region,
and has truly made her an impact player, included in
Seaweed's starting seven for the next three years. In
addition to improving her own game, Claire has been an
incredible leader on our team over the past few years. She
is such a positive and encouraging person that will help any
teammate anytime on or off the field. Her passion radiates
throughout the team and is a driving force to motivate us to
work harder and play smarter. Claire's love for the game is
evident in countless other activities she does while not
playing. She has organized numerous tournaments including
Women's Easterns, and NC Sectionals, and has been an
organizational member of Cape Fear Ultimate. Recently, she
was a guest Coach for "Virginia is for Layouts", a
DIII/Developmental tournament put on by Without Limits.
Claire's talents, commitment, and dedication to all aspects
of the game make her my choice (and hopefully yours) for the
2012 Callahan Award.

Sometimes when I think about the Callahan race - especially
in the women's division - I think of what gets players
votes. Most importantly, players have to be one of the best
players in the game. Claire? Check. Secondly, players
have to give back, be selfless, exude SOTG on and off the
field. Claire? Check (and the posts here do not do her
service resume justice). Thirdly, players need exposure.
Claire? Kind of check. I say kind of not because Claire
has not put herself out there as a college player (MOST Ds
at COLLEGE NATIONALS IN 2011), or as a club player (as a 21
year old we asked Claire to call lines on Phoenix's O
LINE..and I think she still got the most Ds out of anyone on
our team), but because Claire didn't start playing ultimate
until she got to college.
I think the women's division tends to vote for players they
are more familiar with and generally we are more familiar
with players we have watched, played with, interacted with
for 8 years instead of 4-5. We know the Paideia, Amherst,
etc candidates very well. Dont let the lack of exposure to
Claire - because she did not play youth - limit your ability
to vote for her. Actually it should make it all that much
more clear that you should vote for her.
But, that all being said...if she does not win it this year,
she will gain more exposure in the club division and in the
college division in 2013 to close the gap. She will be
another Shannon O'Malley or Leila Tunnell - who both ran for
Callahan twice and did not win it the first time running -
and we will all watching in awe as she accepts if not this
year, but the next.

One of the joys of my ultimate career thus far has been being
teammates with Claire Chastain and watching her becoming one of the
best players in the game. I've watched Claire go from her first
practice where she learned to throw to dominating the game in just a
short time. Every year Claire improves tremendously as a player. As a
player what stands out are her tremendous defensive skills and her
ability to constantly get open offense from any position on the field.
Not only did she have the most d's out of every player last year at
Nationals, she also was pretty high on the leaderboard for assists.
I believe Claire's versatility sets her a part from the other
candidates in the Callahan race.
She's also done so much to give back to the ultimate community as a
whole. She has taught at several Without Limits clinics, observed
games, guest coached and the many others listed above.
Claire's commitment to her team and the uncw program is tremendous.
She brings it every game, but she also leads and inspires passion and
commitment from her teammates. Claire is always evaluating herself as
a player and a leader to make her and her team better. Claire's
priority has always been the development and success of the team.
Claire will continue to dominate the women's game in her last year of
college and her future in club and I can only hope she gets the
recognition she deserves as a player...meanwhile Claire will be humbly
and quietly working as hard as she can to improve herself and
teammates so it will be the team that is recognized and awarded.
