My career has become one of coaching HS kids, and showing up to one tournament every other year. Then swearing I'm retiring. Where once it was Poultry days, it has become Potlatch, but I do it for the awesome team mates, and out of some inability to LET IT GO. But it's been a storied reign. Suffice to say if it's a major coed tournament in OHIO or WASHINGTON, and an even numbered year, and your team is stacked enough to drag me to victory, talk to me.

It rained some throughout the weekend, but never enough to do more than moisten your shoes. Showcase games were provided by The AUS men's teamwho lost by 2 at cap on friday to Sockeye, But beat RiseUP combo team Saturday by, 3, I think.

The Aussies have sworn not to drink before worlds. Boys may have 2 beers per night, and the girls 1, and it had been going on for a well over a week. I did get the impression that this might change that evening, for one night only. But if not, Japan should stock up on metric %^&$-tons of beer for the conclusion of festivities. This is a LARGE turn of events in the international community. It seemed to leading to high tension as I saw a rather heated exchange between an Aussie coed coach and a young lady as to whether or not her bum was deeply enough ensconced in the ice bath. (It was rather more funny, than heated).

There was a party, with dancing, I hear, but, I was uhm, asleep, with earplugs in, after eating at McDonalds and Subway. (Yes both).

A relatively large crowd stayed to watch the finals. In non-ultimate news, Call me Maybe was played 300 times this weekend. Some of Spray Tan Super Fans players discovered that they could stay up all night at the tournament, and just go home during the day, and the 31 person roster would survive. Many super fans found that you could stay up really late on Friday, but go to sleep early on Saturday, and you felt quite rested. And some super fans just babysat the 5 or 6 infants/toddlers.

The Potlatch final was trading points until maybe 4-3 when Spray Tan got a break to go 5-3. I Think half was a one point Spray tan lead, so the Tan gave up the break.

The half involved a 5 game, and a flash mob to, you guessed it, "Call me Maybe"

The game remained close, and there was to be no time cap. Game to 15, hard at 17. Old School. If only we'd thrown in some vert stack, it'd have been perfect (Just saying team mates, think about it). Spray Tan's motto is 'No lead of ours is safe' and had it at 14-10, pulling. I think it went to 14-12 before the Tan Fans shut the door. Some noticeable plays were a ridonculous Stubbs rip over Ray and Henry, and very similar catches by George and Rohre. In each case, the defender tipped it diving, and the receiver basically had to dive at the exact same moment as the defender, react to the mac'd disc, and snag it, while toeing the line. Super. Duper.

Moses was figuratively shoving hard in PI-HI's late run, going up huge over two Super Fans. But with actual sunshine peeking through, the orange-persons took on the radiant glow and overcame whatever needed to be overcome to take home the Totem, and the sweet 5Ultimate Shorts of a CHAMPION. The game was fun, fast paced. I think we've got a game for the 21st century.

The word is that 5Ultimate filmed the game, and it will be shown in a SuperBowl commercial just a few months from now.

After a few minutes of celebration, and some mexican food, and a 7 hour car ride, I arrived home at 5am in Oregon. I Slept 3 hours, and got the kids going at XC running practice. Now i'm off for some brunch Pho, and a little COD before limping out to watch city league.

Bracket Notes
Big Prequarter upset was Down Town Brown upset by Team Lord of the Latch, (Shofners, Stouts, Claremonty)

In quarters,
Barramundis (Aussie Nationals) d. Worst Episode Ever (Doh!)

Little Beirut d. Red October (Canadian, it seemed)

Spray tan Super fan d. Lord of the latch (Cap went off during last point, Lord of latch would have been pulling to tie, had cap gone off even 1 minute later)

Apple Pi-Hi Shooters (Padeia) over FUUUUUUUUU! Pronounced Pho. Which is pronounced Phuh (short u).

In Semis, Apple Pi-Hi (Stubbs, Moses, Kyle, Cricket, Rohre, Butters, but missing an injured Chicken) d. Barramundis 13-10.

In the other Semi, Spray Tan super fan (ex-Seattle and co.) d. Little Beirut (Oregon with some more (Bjorklund, Freechild, Friedman, Jacob, etc.) 14 or 15-11

More Notes:
Things to improve: I think that the simple act of adding hummus (granted may cost money) would make the field food so much better for those of us who spend the weekend there. That said, just add some salad dressing so that not all food is sweet.

They used a cart with a whistle to blow the caps. That is hard to discern in a busy day. Air horns. Lots of them. Let us know when the cap is accross the board.

Management:
The tournament was brilliantly run. They had good pools, and very few if any, teams were denied their rightful place in bracket play. Kudos. I don't know how they do it.

Cost:
It cost a lot. I'm fully supportive of the managers making a nice, and I mean FAT, check. But that said. It was a lot of money. Even though neither I, nor many of my mates, ate at the party, it was well worth it. But, I... just... wonder...

3 days vs. 2.
For the first 7 times i played, it was 2 days. This was obviously a good 2 day tournament, with the 4th on the wednesday. But, is 3 days better than 2? IONO.

Music:
I hate dubstep. Love 5Ultimate.

Excellent info. In regards to the cost of attendance, the
Potlatch organizers always broke even every year. Not sure
if that's still the case, but the cost of renting the fields
is astronomical.

I could definitely be wrong, but I thought I remember that DiscNW loses a fairly significant amount of money each year on Potlatch, and accepts that loss as a benefit to the Northwest Ultimate community. I think that Potlatch does not actually break even, regardless of how expensive it is.

Someone that knows more...chime in?

I was told (and being ultimate, it must mean its a totally
reliable source...) that the cost of fields were increased
to a ridiculous amount this year, so the tournament was cut
to 2 days instead of increasing tournament fees to crazy
amounts.

Doesn't potlatch release their budgets each year to show
where all the money goes?

I'm guessing they went to a 2 day tournament since the 4th
of July fell in the middle of the week.

Potlatch routinely lost money. They were very open about
finances, often posting the budget breakdown from the
previous year in the tournament program. It was two days
this year because of the location of the 4th. (It was also
two days in 2006 and 2007.)

It was a tremendous time as always, and kudos to DiscNW for
another glorious time.

They can't use air horns because the houses nearby call the
cops. They also flew flags when they were blowing whistles
(green for start, yellow for soft cap, red for hard cap)

Well done sir!
Thanks for doing that. I stand very much corrected; Potlatch has been making money, usually in healthy chunks. What I surmised before was definitely incorrect.

My personal take is that this amount of profit is ok. I'm not trying to defend the Potlatch folks from accusations of raking it in, but my sense is that the potential liability of the event makes this profit seem reasonable, especially given the large size of the budget overall. Perhaps it is too much to ask for Joaquin to add in the overall budget numbers to get a real sense of that?

With the demand for spots in the tournament, and the places that the money eventually goes to (supporting NW Ultimate), I am happy that they are making a profit. Hopefully it'll keep happening in the future.

Thanks, Joaquin, for digging this up and getting some actual numbers on the table! Thanks to the Potlatch folks for making this readily available.

Thanks for the kind words, Luke and Pete. And thanks to
everyone who came this year and helped to make Potlatch 2012
a big success. Also, thanks for your comments and questions
about Potlatch operations.

Unfortunately, we are prevented from using air horns at 60
Acres. In short, the lease between the park managers and
the county was redone a few years ago. The new lease has a
stipulation that prevents the use of air horns at the park.
So, we make do with flags and whistles.

In general, the decision about having a two day or three day
tournament is related to the calendar. When the holiday is
on a Friday, Saturday, Sunday, or Monday - it'll probably be
a three day tournament. When it's on a Wednesday - it'll
probably be a two day tournament. We are still evaluating
what we'll do when the holiday is on a Tuesday or Thursday
(as it is next year).

In the past, the Potlatch budget has fluctuated. Our
ability to turn a profit recently is based on several
factors including better overall budget management and lots
and lots of volunteer support. In fact, the Potlatch TDs
are all volunteers. They receive some schwag and other
perks, but they are not otherwise compensated for their
work. Potlatch TDs that are on team rosters even pay the
same player fees as everyone else. If a reasonable wage was
paid to the TDs for their work, the budget would surely be
in the red again. And it takes a lot of work, both before
and after the actual event, to put on this tournament.

It is worth noting that revenues from all DiscNW programs,
including Potlatch, help to cover our administrative costs.
Otherwise, DiscNW would not be able to pay for insurance,
storage locker rental, website fees, staff salaries, etc.
Those administrative costs are not reflected in the figures
posted earlier in this thread. Any profits after accounting
for those administrative costs help to support other
programs and to sustain overall DiscNW operations.

DiscNW is a nonprofit organization. No individuals are
making money on Potlatch or other events. DiscNW uses all
profits to support ultimate and to further our mission. Not
a penny of profits go into anyone's pockets.

Thanks,
William Bartram
