Hey everyone,

This week are very proud to present a feature on race in Ultimate. We
have invited members of Downtown Brown, a pick-up team composed of
players of color, to discuss how race and Ultimate interact.

Check it out:

Thanks for reading everyone!

the reason that ultimate is a white boy sport is simple. first off
its a subruban sport, like soccer and lax.......and we all know there
aint too many brothahs and sistas in the suberbs. second the way the
competition is structured one must have a surgar daddy, or mama to get
started.....which is usually at the college level.......which means
you got to have enough jack to get into college in the first place.
Also, most whiteys want to stay on the top of the food chain in this
sport so it aint likely theys are gonna evoke any changes in the
structure or format that would cause them to lose that stronghold.

also....i dont know about everybody else but i dont really consider
asians to be in the same class of minority as blacks.......probably
due to the financial class that they belong to......which IS a
suburban one.

get a team of ALL brothahs, ilke the MOB from the 70's/80's and then
your showing me some progress in ultimates diversity.

So racially homogeneous teams are evidence of progress, whereas
integrated teams are... not? Not to get distracted from the real
purpose of this huddle issue...

well, having a token brotha or sista here or there is hardly
diverse......and a token asian even less so. but brown town is the
one running the program so jump on their dick about that. personally
i'd just like to see a team of all brothers to watch them dominate.

Mike's article opens with a very common scenario, identifying someone
by the most readily available phenotype ("The Asian Guy"), which would
not adequately clarify Caucasians on most teams. The white target of
such a question may be labeled by a body type ("The Tall Guy"),
secondary ethnic feature ("The Redhead"), or accessory ("The Guy
Wearing a Green Hat").

I've always assumed that using such appearance-based identification is
generally not harmful, and is near universal- I'm sure a white Buzz
Bullets player would be identified as "The American" or "The White
Guy;" the same thing happens in sports where white players are a
strong minority (e.g. basketball). It's simply for convenience,
although it does highlight differences.

However, I know of at least one research study that has found that
identifying ethnicity prior to taking a standardized test actually can
reduce test performance for African-American students, probably by
making negative racial schemas regarding academic performance more
salient. Does explicit racial identification contribute to
stereotyping roles in ultimate and other sports? To what extent does
this harm race relations and/or minority involvement in roles that are
seen as incongruent?

Sorry, to clarify, I think that DTB has something special going on. I
was responding to your post that an all-black team would be evidence
of diversity. As I understand it, DTB is more like a reunion/
organization which meets and plays together at ultimate tournaments,
which helps equip and encourage them to compete and play on teams
where they are typically a strong minority.

And why do you have this idea that an all african-american team would
dominate? Logic would dictate that you pull the best players from all
talent pools, rather than limiting yourself to one racial group.
Integrated baseball teams are overall more talented than either negro
league or all-white teams back in the day.

thats kinda hard to varify though, dont ya think......and base ball is
more of a white boy sport anyways. ultimate is a combo of basket ball
and football mainly.....and we all know which race dominates those
sports.

Since I am but a poor law student and can't afford to make it out to
Potlatch, I was wondering-does anyone have contact info for any
members of Downtown Brown, particularly the ones that wrote articles
for the Huddle feature?

This is hilarious. Toad, your argument is as follows (as originially
stated):

"second the way the competition is structured one must have a surgar
daddy, or mama to get started.....which is usually at the college
level.......which means you got to have enough jack to get into
college in the first place."

Basically, you say you have to have money to play ultimate. Don't
disagree, but wouldn't that be a class issue, not a race issue?

Granted, there are a disproportionate number of minority races that
are in the lower classes, but if the issue is money that prevents
minorities from playing ultimate, then it is a class issue, not race.

Also, it is interesting reading your presecpective given that you are
the strongest advocate for refs which would...thats right, make it
MORE expensive to play ultimate and even less accessible to lower
class players.

___________________

Wait a minute...forget what I just said. I just re-read your post
Toad. I was assuming that your mispelling "THERE" was supposed to be
"THE," a common mistake from you leading to the sentence (all
spellings corrected as I originally read) "I don't think the thing is
"class diversity".....just race diversity."

I now realize that what you meant to say was "I don't think THEIR
thing is "class diversity"....just race diversity."

I thought you were talking about the issue as a whole, when you were
actually talking about DTB specifically. Silly me, after reading so
many of your misspelled posts it seems I would be better at
interpreting them.

Now the problem is that you assumed (I am guessing incorrectly) that
Eugene, the original poster, was just poor, when in fact, I suspect he
is of a racial minority, thus interested in Downtown Brown. The fact
that he is poor was his reason for not making it to Potlatch, not his
connection to Downtown Brown. A minor issue though.
