So im about 5 months out of my surgery and just got the custom brace
my Doc wants me to play in. Only problem is I am having trouble
running with the brace. As in the brace seems to be sliding a bit or
to prevent that I make it so tight that its very uncomfortable. Just
wanting to see if any other ultimate players out there, are playing
with the brace and have any tips on what they do to make it more
managable

If you need that brace, you aren't ready to play.

I used one and hated it. Lots of pro athletes tear their ACL. It's
no coincidence that you don't see them come back wearing a brace; at
least not performing at a high level.

Good luck. Keep doing squats and plyos.

I agree with Jacob.

I tore both ACL's ('97 and '05) playing ultimate and returned to a
high level of play relatively quickly both times.

I did wear my brace for a while while playing for a few months, but
mostly as a reminder to myself of where I was in recovery. But five
months out, running on a flat surface, you shouldn't need it. I can't
believe you only got a brace at this point; they gave me mine right
away.

If you do want to wear it, and it is either too tight or slips down,
it probably isn't sized right and maybe your doc should take another
look at it!

Good luck getting back into the sport. The more agressively you
rehab, the sooner you'll be back to where you want to be.

Perhaps the best rehab exercise for me was leg lifts (in all four
directions) gradually building up ankle weights.

Hello Oreo,

So I am currently in my seventh week of recovery from my second ACL
surgery (different legs). My physician does not require the use of a
brace, and that is the only reason why I don't wear one. Different
surgeons have different techniques and different opinions.

I disagree with Jacob and Dave only because I think you are
misunderstanding what Oreo is saying. He is not referring to an
immobilizer, which everyone receives immediately following their
surgery. He is referring to a sports brace, which a lot of pro and
college football players use.

I think that either the material that functions as a medium between
the brace and your knee is poor (i.e. slippery), or you might just
have to wear a certain type of clothing so that it doesn't slip. If
all else fails, call up the people who fitted you since I'm sure this
sort of thing happens often.

Yea i am referring to a sports a brace and not the immobilizer. The
reason I got my brace a bit later was I also fully tore both of my
meniscus and that slowed recovery down a good amount of time. But
thank you for the response

I personally hate braces. I wore one after tearing my PCL in
college. When i tore my ACL in club.....the only time i wore my brace
was when they fitted me for it. I keep it in the closet in case
something happens...but i doubt ill ever use it. Like you said, they
just dont stay exactly in the right place. I feel safter with my
agility than i did wearing a brace and feeling clumsy/cumbersome. I'm
now a couple years out of my surgery and doing great. Good luck!

i'm actually have the same surgery as Oreo on tuesday. Dr.
told me 6-9 months recovery time...6 months seems on the low
end. How long did it take all of you to really be able to
play with quickness and explosiveness again after surgery?

tore my first and only ACL (knock on wood) at age 30. Took me about a
year before I felt like my old self again. Coulda rehabbed harder, but
people definitely improve at their own pace. My advice: take your time
and find a brace that fits better for the short term. I was told
braces do nothing for prevention, but did provide me with piece of
mind for month 7 thru 10.

I just passed my 6-month mark, and feel nowhere near normal when it
comes to explosiveness or quickness. I can't rehab like a pro athlete,
but I feel I'm getting stronger, just not as quickly as I would like.
Everyone is different, and you have to listen to your body more than
you listen to others' expectations. That being said, my doc and PT
said 12 months until I stop thinking about it when I play, and that
braces don't help. With strong rehab, my new ACL should be STRONGER
than my original ligament, so a brace would be redundant. Just have to
stay focused on getting stronger and don't do anything stupid. Good
luck, Mimmo. Surgery right before Christmas? Ouch. Your next couple
weeks are going to suck, but it will get better quickly after that.
Get yourself a Netflix subscription and a cold-therapy system instead
of ice packs. Much easier and decreases pain a ton in the beginning. I
could make you a sweet deal on mine! wiggity at gmail dot com.

I played my first ultimate scrimmage at 4 months.
Played well, but was definately a little slow on the defensive change
of directions, and my hamstring had not fully recovered (used
hamstring graft)
Went to Ring tryouts at 6 months, felt pretty good. Definately was
not worried about knee stability.
By first tournament at 8 months i'd say i was 100%, although i had
trouble with some of the full tournament pounding and fatigue.
Do wall sits all day every day! haha.

soccerdave-

I am having ACL surgery this upcoming Wednesday, and am looking to be
on a timeline where I can be back and playing in just over 5 months at
College Nationals. Any recommendations for pre and post surgery would
be appreciated. I have zero swelling or pain, and no other internal
damage in the knee aside from the completely torn ACL.

best-

ben
