I used one and hated it. Lots of pro athletes tear their ACL. It's
no coincidence that you don't see them come back wearing a brace; at
least not performing at a high level.
Good luck. Keep doing squats and plyos.
I tore both ACL's ('97 and '05) playing ultimate and returned to a
high level of play relatively quickly both times.
I did wear my brace for a while while playing for a few months, but
mostly as a reminder to myself of where I was in recovery. But five
months out, running on a flat surface, you shouldn't need it. I can't
believe you only got a brace at this point; they gave me mine right
away.
If you do want to wear it, and it is either too tight or slips down,
it probably isn't sized right and maybe your doc should take another
look at it!
Good luck getting back into the sport. The more agressively you
rehab, the sooner you'll be back to where you want to be.
Perhaps the best rehab exercise for me was leg lifts (in all four
directions) gradually building up ankle weights.

Hello Oreo,
So I am currently in my seventh week of recovery from my second ACL
surgery (different legs). My physician does not require the use of a
brace, and that is the only reason why I don't wear one. Different
surgeons have different techniques and different opinions.
I disagree with Jacob and Dave only because I think you are
misunderstanding what Oreo is saying. He is not referring to an
immobilizer, which everyone receives immediately following their
surgery. He is referring to a sports brace, which a lot of pro and
college football players use.
I think that either the material that functions as a medium between
the brace and your knee is poor (i.e. slippery), or you might just
have to wear a certain type of clothing so that it doesn't slip. If
all else fails, call up the people who fitted you since I'm sure this
sort of thing happens often.
tore my first and only ACL (knock on wood) at age 30. Took me about a
year before I felt like my old self again. Coulda rehabbed harder, but
people definitely improve at their own pace. My advice: take your time
and find a brace that fits better for the short term. I was told
braces do nothing for prevention, but did provide me with piece of
mind for month 7 thru 10.
I am having ACL surgery this upcoming Wednesday, and am looking to be
on a timeline where I can be back and playing in just over 5 months at
College Nationals. Any recommendations for pre and post surgery would
be appreciated. I have zero swelling or pain, and no other internal
damage in the knee aside from the completely torn ACL.
