now that the history is making its rounds, it's time to hold the big
book up against parinella's ultimate techniques and tactics to see
which of the ultimate tomes comes out on top.

length: history - 208 pp.
techniques - 208 pp.
coincidence? i think not. still, can you imagine? the history covers 40
years of ultimate in the same space it takes parinella to cover what he
knows about the game. and let's not forget, the 208 pages is the
edited version of parinella. who can fathom the length of the first
draft?

advantage: history

weight: history - an assload
techniques - no idea (never seen it)

advantage: history
it's more than a book. it's a counterweight, doorstop, boat anchor,
and it can core a apple.

relevance: history - scintilla
techniques - iota
in the history you'll learn that in 1991the upa was headquartered in
houston, tx, although dues were collected in siler city, nm. not
surprisingly, techniques contains more useful information.

advantage: techniques

bedtime reading: history: most beds would collapse.
techniques: parinella is soporific in
person, coma inducing in print.
but for an additional $10, the history can be ordered with legs that
actually make it a night table.

advantage: history

readablity:

history: the first page includes this tortured prose: "after being
shot down over italy, captured and taken prisoner at stalag 13, the
german prison camp, morrison returned from war as a carpenter in
california."

techniques: includes this pearl of wisdom: "generally speaking, with
a huck, the only risk-assessment factor working in your favor is the
greater reward that results if successful."

advantage: push

cover photo: history: mick ribault's underwear
techniques: chase two long names' grab

advantage: techniques (why do you think they call it underwear?)

interior photos: history: three pictures of me
techniques: no clue (never seen it)

advantage: techniques

price: history $50
techniques: $20

advantage: history
even at less than half the price, techniques is no bargain. stand next
to parinella at any frisbee party, ask him one question about strategy,
and start taking notes. you'll get the whole shebang for free.

so, there you have it. as told by the tale of the tape, ultimate, the
first four decades, is the better of the ultimate tomes (hope this gets
seidler off my back).

happy new year

If certain aging players are having a problem lifting the Ultimate
History Book, let me know and I'll see if we can put out a paperback
version. Of course the problem would be we'd need to use large print so
they could read it, and that would mean more pages.

You forgot to compare the history book's DVD to techniques'.

and if nepotism ridden fathers are having trouble moving product,
paperback and large print might not be a bad idea.

Wow, who the hell ever lived in Silver City? Its ultimate glory days
are surely over, because there isn't jack shit happening here now.

And if any person depicts the intensity of an Ultimate player, your bro
does in the George Plimpton narrated video "Quest To Be Best in
Ultimate Frisbee" produced by Peter Zasuly (in the book DVD) of 1985
nationals.

there really is no nepotism involved in this book project, despite your
best attempts at bandying about an SAT word like you know what you are
talking about

nepotism: favoritism shown to a relative (as by giving an appointive
job) on a basis of a relationship

Joe Seidler has shown absolutely NONE of this in the book project.
Furthermore, it is a total joke to think that anyone involved with this
book is getting any much benefit from it. There are certainly no jobs
that the book has been giving away. I wish we could, in fact, give away
jobs.

Jason Seidler has a sidebar written in the book. That was comissioned
by me. Joe had nothing to do with it. Jason wrote about UCSB and a
little bit about the Condors, of which he had ample knowledge.

Joe has been forthright and above-the-board in all aspects related to
the book.

Please try another angle, y'all.

I was actually thinking Cronyism rather than Nepotism when I read the
accounts of how Boston saved the spirit of the game from almost being
destroyed by Windy and then NYNY. It does pay to be part of the inner
circle of the UPA, and having Nob on your team apparently isn't enough
of a connection.

Speaking of which, how about those Hall of Fame nominations this year?
