Don't forget shorts that say "juicy" on the butt. Remember, font and

Yeah... you clearly don't understand the meaning of the word
"original" (not surprisingly):

original (adj): not secondary, derivative, or imitative <an
original composition>; being the first instance or source
from which a copy, reproduction, or translation is or can be
made

Other sports already have striped refs... so if AUDL had
striped refs, they would be imitating or copying those
sports... and thus... unoriginal.

Going out for popcorn, can't wait to see your kooky
rebuttal.

original is great and all but I'm not sure originality
simply for originality's sake is exactly the bar that you
want to set.

now if you can come up with some sort of improvement, that
would be original.

kinda like how the nfl redesigned their "stripes" look????

i guess for me its all about conforming so that you can get your foot
in the door. no need to reinvent the wheel. people know from the get
go that ultimate is different because of the disc.......isnt that
enough? now i know ultimate had taken on the "orange shirt" look but
1) what happens when you have two teams that wear a similar color
jerzy to that orange and 2) what if there was an "improvement" by
making those orange shirts orange and white stripes, like the old afl
ref unies? i think i could live with that look.

---since 'sublimated' uniforms are so 'cool' now-a-days.....maybe the
officials' uniform could be a huge picture of a referee giving the
'touchdown' signal.
the shirt could be the traditional orange ultimate 'observer'
color.....with the image of the ref wearing black and white stripes....

directed toward Bulb, and a lot of other ultimate folks who
are misguided in thinking that ultimate must be different
just to be different.

original is better if it's better. it's not better just
because it's different.

Oh, I couldn't care less what the AUDL referees wear. I was

vocabulary skills and/or reading comprehension.

Go with greys like the NBA. even when they're running down
the court i never notice them because they seem to blend
into the background (which is what you want, right? focus
on the action of the sport not the officials in bright
colors or highly visible stripes) You wouldn't want to

i dont mind if they are noticed......they are part of the show. and i
think its important for people to spot them at a distance fairly
easily. its also important that they not be confused with the
players, which is where the stripes come into play. form follows
function.

thing is, stripes are the universal signification FOR refs.........the
thing about grey is that teams would have to wear white and dark. no
teams would be able to wear grey.

By demonstrating your improper use of the word "original."

but refs in stripes are, i think, the original version of
them. or stripes are the original uniform for refs.

because contrary to what all of you young wippersnappers
might think, original can also mean:
belonging or pertaining to the origin or beginning of
something, or to a thing at its beginning AND
a primary form or type from which varieties are derived.
OR
an original work, writing, or the like, as opposed to any
copy or imitation.

so maybe, Toad knows exactly what original means and you
only half know what it means.

I agree that the argument over usage of the word "original" is silly. But if you really want to go to the first ever referee uniforms, you are going to have to class it up a bit (this is soccer, but I know american football refs dressed similarly in the early days):

although there are some striped up refs in black and white as well

No disagreement there.

Toad suggested that it would be "original" for the AUDL to
have their refs wear stripes. Does that really fit any of
the definitions you listed?

thefan wrote on Tue, 31 January 2012 12:09
> belonging or pertaining to the origin or beginning of
> something, or to a thing at its beginning

Clearly, AUDL refs wearing stripes would not be the
beginning of refs wearing stripes, nor does it belong to the
origin. It only pertains to the origin insofar as they are
the same - but if you use that logic to consider something
original, then EVERYTHING should be considered original, as
any given thing would either be truly original or the same
as something else that is original.

thefan wrote on Tue, 31 January 2012 12:09
> a primary form or type from which varieties are derived.

Again, obviously, AUDL refs wearing stripes would not be a
primary form from which varieties are derived. (In fact, it
would be an example of a variety derived from the
original.)

thefan wrote on Tue, 31 January 2012 12:09
> an original work, writing, or the like, as opposed to

AUDL refs wearing stripes would be an imitation of other
sports in which refs wore stripes. Again, not original.

So... how is it original for AUDL refs to wear stripes?

go back to the top of the thread. Toad's initial post says
"Plllllease wear stripes" then someone says that "stripes =
stupid" and accuses Toad of lacking originality. i believe
asking if he "could be any less original"

then toad replies 'but "stripes" ARE the original ref unie.
so yes, wear anything else
and youde be being "less original"'

notice Toad not claiming originality in being the first or
the being different sense. he say's that stripes are the
originalthe exact intention toad putting 'less original' in
quotes but i think the statement clearly demonstrates Toad's
command of the meaning of the word.

it also demonstrates a lack of Toad claiming that ultimate
refs in stripes would be "original" but rather a nod to the
original uniform of sports referees. some might claim that
this demonstrates a lack or reading comprehension on your
part, but i'll go gentler and say that it shows your
eagerness to jump at any chance to denigrate and argue with
Toad.

in the syntax of Bobus

Right here:

Are those quotes around "less original" supposed to imply
some kind of sarcasm or alternative definition? If wearing
anything else is less original, then wearing stripes must be
original, which is contradictory to the meaning of the
word.

Though Keg's right, this debate is pointless, the refs
should clearly wear cardigans.

Works well in the National Basketball Association.

And they wouldn't HAVE to wear "white and dark" they could
easily wear red verse blue, as long as the team uni's are
easily distinguishable from each other and the refs

exactly......less of the true origin of using the "original" ref unie.

not just "some kind" of alternative definition.......but the ORIGINAL
definition......of "original". i mean, who the fuck are you to think
you get to decide what definition of a word thats being used. and
whats the big fucking deal about being "original" in the way you are
choosing to interpret that word in the first place? ultimate shouldnt
worry about being original (in that vain) anyways, they should worry
about conforming so the sport can be accepted into the fraternity of
sports rather than continuing to be the outcasted red headed stepchild
(which i think is the aim of the audl, no?). the frisbee disc gives
the sport all the originality it needs. i mean, what do YOU sugest
they wear that would make them be "different"? cause the unies those
audl refs were wearing looked an awful lot like soccer ref unies.
