I would pay no more than $10, and it would likely be one
time, depending on the Mechanix roster (ie how many of my
friends make the team).

Mr. Geile, I was a founding and core member of the LCN squad
that enjoyed so many competitive battles with your BAT team.
You were a large part of the successes of that team and a
major focus of our defensive strategy. However, at no point
during our discussions of how your skills might expose some
weaknesses of ours was your "speed" brought up.

The CT team's facebook page is advertising their first
tryout coming up, so I'm not sure who the players were
during in this video. The video was supposedly from their
"Media Day" in November.

Does anyone know what a "Media Day" for an AUDL team
consists of or looks like? Who were the players? Did the
local media have a lot of insightful questions about the
sport that AUDL execs were able to answer?

I have the sneaking suspicion that the stands will look the
same and the noise from the crowd will match this video come
gameday.

Why would I pay $6 to watch it when I can see it on YouTube
for free ninety nine? Unless there were cheerleaders.....

I would pay either price for a single game. If I go more
often than just once, I'd probably sit in the $6 seats most
of the time. The true cost of the games for me would be
carpooling from Cleveland to Columbus.

The AUDL owners already have facebook and twitter set up for
their teams. Hopefully they leverage these tools to
determine what motivates fans to go the games.

The field is so huge, I fastforwarded through a lot of the
video but did anyone get within 5 yards of a sideline the
entire game (the field is 6.5 yards wider on each side vs
USAU)?

Most of the marks seemed relatively legal (no bump marking
or "hard marks"). Impossible to say whether this was
because of the refs or just the pace/lack of intensity of
the game, but it definitely stands to reason that you aren't
going to bump mark if you just get immediately whistled
every time (are there foul limits?).

On that note, though, the 5 yard markoffs for fouls and
travels seem a bit odd though, as depending on the positions
of the other players, going forward 5 yards could be a
disadvantage and going back 5 could be an advantage, or
really just have little to no effect at all. I might favor
something that includes penalties or advantages for
repositioning the defenders as well as the markoff. Such as
on a foul on the mark, the thrower gets the 5 yards but the
marker has to go back 5 yards, and on a travel the thrower
gets marked off 5 yards and the entire defense gets to
reset.

I wouldn't pay 6 or 10 dollars, especially if they play as lazily as
they do in that video. I can go see better teams for free at any legit
club tournament over the course of the summer. The obnoxious ref's
with their whistles, and huge field, and the stupid markoffs for fouls
make me want to go even less. Making so many drastic changes to the
game isn't the way to get people excited or to go to games if you ask
me.

The group at media day was a mix of former D5 men, Uconn players, and
a few others. There were 16 of us total and we played 3 or 4 quarters
trying out the new AUDL rules and helping the referees get the hang of
it. I can't access the video right now but i'm pretty sure this is
the 3rd quarter video so we had all been playing practically savage
for some time before this. There were people there who I'd guess are
not experienced enough to make the team but still played well (though
it all depends on who trys out).

The best part was that the refs actually enjoyed it a lot and were
very enthusiastic about doing it again and learning the rules.

Some of the people there, sorry to those who i can't remember:
Jacob Taylor (Ironside)
Misha Horowitz (QC)
John Korber (D5, Now GM and coach)
Chris Mazur (D5)
Rafe Steinhauer (D5)
Alex Morrone (D5)
Andy Bosco (D5)
Seth Churchill (D5)

I'd get some perspective before jumping to conclusions. The goal of
this was not go 100% make a big play and take a point off. We were
all playing for a long time and there were times we would try and foul
each other or travel to help the referees learn the rules. This was
far from an intense game.

We basically talked with the owner for a bit, a few reporters/people
took pictures and someone shot this video. We played a bit and then
sat down with the owner and refs and talked about stuff for a while
and the refs were enthusiastic about doing more and asked if we had
the energy to keep going and we were all up for it so we played a
couple more quarters. There was a lot of good input from players on
rules and the CT owner was very open to ideas to take back and share
with the other owners.

The media wasn't much of a force, I'm told there was something on the
local fox news station but i didn't catch it.

Also it's Seth Canetti, not Seth Churchill. My bad churchy, my brain

It's really tough to analyze gameplay (system/refs) when the
gameplay (action) is so poor. I'm not at all trying to
knock the guys there playing, as I totally understand the
long day/limited players/new system issue. Basically I
guess I'm saying I don't think it's a fair question based on
this video. IMO, even if the ref/rules are positive changes
from what most of us currently know as ultimate (TBD), I
don't think people will pay ANYTHING to watch unless the
action rivals AT LEAST an Open Club Regionals level (and
maybe nationals). How do you get good enough players for
that on an upstart budget? Well, that's the million dollar
question I suppose...

whistle for the turnover?
am i hearing that?
12:45

a great bit of deception, is tricking your defender into NOT knowing
that your team has turned the disc over...
it keeps him out of his teams offense for a few seconds.

if you blow the whistle for every common turnover....it gives the
impression of a stoppage of play....and it TELLS the players something
they may not want their opponent to know.

ie......when a football is fumbled, the ref doesn't go around
whistling to announce the loose ball.
he doesn't make sure that everyone who's not looking...knows that
there's a fumble.
he doesn't go around tapping those guys on the shoulder, point, and
say...hey, loose ball over there for you to go pick up.

ditch the 'turnover' whistle!

The question remains: How many paying fans of "the target
audience" will go to these games. How many will go more than
once?

Because that is the question that will define the
success/profitability of this league.

Does anyone have any knowledge of the marketing efforts in
AUDL cities so far, to generate some buzz about this new
professional sports league among the uninitiated potential
Ultimate consumer?

In response to the marketing efforts, I participated in the
Detroit Mechanix combine. The owner of the Mechanix is also
the VP of Marketing for the entire league, so I'm sure his
strategy for the Mechanix is going to be duplicated, in some
form, for the entire league.

This is my basic understanding of the marketing efforts. The
owner did not fully divulge his strategy to the combine
participants, as I'm sure we don't need to know. Our focus
is on playing, and that was made very evident.

The marketing strategy revolves around local charities. For
every ticket that is bought for admission $1 will be donated
to a local charity (or something to that nature. Again, this
is what I understood). The goal is to branch out to
different charities and get the word out that we are here
not only to sell tickets, but also to campaign for
philanthropist efforts. At some point, the Mechanix will
offer these charities free admission. In doing so, the goal
is to get friends/family members/parents/guardians to join
and pay for tickets. That is the start-up plan to get people
in the stands and spread the word.

Philanthropy is then an objective as part of the business
model. People will be drawn to the team, and gain exposure
through local news stations, which will draw more and more
sponsors to the league.

Now, the owners truly believe that the product that we give
on the field, at the highest level, can and will be
profitable. They truly do. They believe that we, the
players, have not had the marketing insight, but more
importantly the financial capital to produce this on a
bigger stage.

BurningCouch6, you have just provided the most substantial
answer to any question about the AUDL that has ever been
posted on this forum! Thank you!

Now these are answers I can live with, and they actually
sound like pretty good ideas. If this is the kind of
strategy the AUDL owners are going for, I hope they have the
patience and funds to allow it to develop. Good stuff, thank
you (finally!) for the response.

OR proper representation. usau sure dosent know how to pimp elite
ultimate......and the whole anti ref thing is exhibit A. but this is
a very good assestment of ultimate.......although i would say that
usau definitly has the bank (clout, credit and connections to boot) to
subsidize such a league.

one of the most promising things i'v herd as of late was the high

I wasn't at media day, but I saw the video. I was at the
past two combines and I can tell you that the level of play
in the scrimmages was at a much higher level than what you
saw on media day. You can tell by the rug burns with which
the guys were walking off the field, how competitive it was.
There is some video and photos on the CT Constitution
facebook page that will give an inkling of what to look for
this coming season. Based on what I saw, I'd pay to watch.
