i dunno it was pretty damn hot in columbus
That's because UCLA was there. They should be letting us know about
the location in June.

My parents live in Atlanta.
I live in D.C.
I've never been to Natties. Barring some grad school action, I never
will play there. I'm going to pray to any supreme being I decide to
make up that its in either of those places.
I don't get this argument. Having been to 3 out of the past 4
nationals, I can say that the heat in Austin wasn't really that bad.
Especially considering the humidity in columbus this year. Not to
mention the fact that Corvallis had a 90 plus day on friday as well. I
remember this vividly because we played Carleton and they were wearing
long sleeve jerseys in that heat.
The funny thing about the Austin "heat" was that a cold front had come
through right before the weekend dropping the temps from 100's to low
to mid 90's. The humidity was down and the fields were perfect. And
actually, this past weekend had the same temps in Columbus and in
Austin. I really don't think "heat" should be a factor in determining
wear natties are played. Obviously we don't want to play in the middle
of the desert, but I think we shouldn't have that sort of thinking when
determining the location.
With all that said, what about the idea of having natties in a series
of set locations across the nation? That way we would know where it
will be in 2 or 3 years. You could have a set of locations (say 3 or
4) and each location gets 2 years (or 1) in a row and it then rotates
to the next location. I don't know how exactly to implement it, but I
have heard it being done for other club sports and for oh, i don't
know, the BCS bowls. It's not a bad idea at all though. but neither
is 2 bids per region and we all have seen how far that idea has gotten.
How it should be:
Sectionals should be rotated between states evenly.
Regionals should be rotated between sections evenly.
Nationals should be rotated between regions evenly.
Not hard, fair, simple. If a state/section/region is unable to provide
a suitable location by an initial deadline the next st/sc/reg gets to
put in bids.

P.S. - And lets even out the 2 bids per region while we are at it, if
we are only going to focus on 1st place anyways tell me the last time a
team finishing 3rd at regionals won nationals... or even made it to
finals...

The rotation is good, but for sectional/regions with one strong area
that sends a majority of teams, they should get to host more often. In
my (club) section, the majority of teams are from the Atlanta area and
very few are from SC, TN or South GA. Atlanta should get to host more
often since 70% of the teams hail from there.
No reason that Nationals can't rotate around the nation, unless we find
one killer site with a great volunteer base that is just head and
shoulders above the rest of the possible locations.

I assume if they could rotate locations they gladly would. Maybe that's
in the works. Who knows.

Possibly referring to Ryan Smith of NC state who I believe suffered
from heat exhaustion. If I remember correctly they were drenching him
with hoses late during day 1, went to the hospital and he was unable to
play the rest of the tournament.
I believe the reference is to a CUT player. Can't remember his name,
but he was in the hospital for several days afterwards. Rumor had it
that he was having convulsions at the main tent, though that may have
just been rumor.

Ryan Smith was one of the players badly affected, but there was another
(and worse) case.
Additionally, 2004 Prime finished 3rd in Women's NW Regionals and 2nd
at UPA Championships; 2003 both Fury (Women's) and Donner Party (Mixed)
finished 3rd at NW Regionals and won UPA Championships.
I used to think this whole 2 bids per region thing was a good idea,
until I moved to a region with more than 2 really good teams.

There were several cases of heat exhaustion (two players on my team
required treatment in the ambulance), but I'm pretty sure there were no
cases of heat stroke. Heat stroke occurs when your body can not cool
itself and core temperatures excede 104*F. Two hallmark signs of heat
stroke are hot, dry skin and mental confusion. Heat exhaustion is
serious, but it's not quite in the league of heat stroke. I don't
think a few cases of heat exhaustion is reason enough to write off
Austin as a possible nationals location. We get a few cases of heat
exhaustion every year at summer league tournaments, but we're not going
to cancel the tournament because of it.
If the athletes are educationed about the potential hazards of playing
in a hot environment, the risks can be minimized. The training staff
in Austin was large and prepared for the heat. The temperatures in
Oregon and Ohio were just as bad as Austin. Maybe we just need to pick
a location that doesn't start with a vowel.
Wait, that eliminates Atlanta. Nevermind.
here's a thought: how bout nationals is in somewhere cool like Canada
every year.(cool as in weather cool) Apparently Texas was too hot, we
all saw how hot columbus was, move it to canada. i suppose some west
coast locations might be all right too (not TOO hot over there)... but
my vote is for canda
canada is lame because everyone has to get passports then. they can be
difficult (just ask me, ive had to get mine twice in the last 4
months). maybe somewhere like colorado, minnesota or wisconsin (we all
saw how seattle went...brrrr)
CR
2 bids a region (COLLEGE), not hard...

IIRC, one of the criteria for nationals locations is proximity to a
major airport and availability of flights from other major metropolitan
areas. I think this has been a deal breaker for some sites that would
otherwise be well qualified.
The drive from Atlanta is only ~8 hours. That's reasonable.
I think it's important to remember that there may not have been a 2 v 3
game. Last year's NW Coll Women's Regionals is one example, although
Washington did lose to Cal in a crossover game on Saturday. And I seem
to recall that Donner Party had some really weird format/tiebreaker
problems that contributed.
