Hey Guys.

This is Tim Beatty, one of the captains from UCSB Black Tide. We have
been talking to a lot of the teams supposedly invited to Conference 1
and it seems as though a lot of teams are going to be passive and wait
for any development from other teams. I completely understand why this
is the case and am myself in the same boat. I am intrigued by this
idea of Conference 1 and see a lot of pros and cons regarding this.
But, still I do not want to make a move and be kind of stuck in no
man's land if most of the other teams refuse to switch; but I also
don't want the most elite teams in the nation to make the switch and
be somewhat of an outsider looking in while the best competition
battles it out. I'm sure this is the way most teams feel right now,
not to mention a boat load of other questions and concerns that I
have. Is there any way that the teams invited to Conference1 can have
more of an efficient discussion about it and possibly come to a
conclusion collectively, sort of like a union? Anyways, just a
thought. I'd like to hear from some of the other team captains
invited. Any talk at all from the parties involved...

seems like there is a certian amount of urgancey.

Maybe the c1 teams should form some kind of a union so that you
negotiate with them(c1) as a unit. But you got to get your own shit
together first. like we used to say back in the 60's "organize man,
organize."......or get some good representation.

I believe the last time UCSB got some representation to deal with an
ultimate governing body, things didn't really work out the way they
wanted...

My team wasn't invited to C1 so please don't think i'm antiC1 because
of that but it seems that issues like this should have been worked out
before hand... team captains, and the UPA should have known about this
and had communication and input into it, rather than just being thrown
under the bus with a "join or die" idea. I kinda feel the same way
that everyone else does... it's a good idea, but could be too much of
a leap instead of a step into the right direction... potential for
great growth and potential for great failure. Anyways best of luck to
you captains who have to make this difficult decision... I know
personally South Regionals will not be the same without Kansas and
Texas but if you guys do decide to go C1 then put a freaking UPA South
Region beat down on those other C1 teams.

wont it make it a little cooler for two other teams though. And what
team that isnt in the top 25 has a rats chance in hell of even making
upa nationals much less winning it? YOU GUYS SHOULD PUMPED AT THE
PROSPECT OF THIS!!!! This is a win win for everybody.

and rather than the upa bitching an moaning about it they should take
this as an opportunity to quit neglecting the lower level teams and
provied tiered competition opportunities that go beyond being "one and
done" at sectionals.

see now this is a great attitude.......way to be supportive. And look
at what it could do for ultimate accross the board if c1 takes off.
Also.....in the long term, who ever contols college ultimate,
eventually its all gonna get swallowed up by the ncaa anyways. So why
not just have a "lets go for it" attitude. whats the worst that can
become of it? It fails and we go back to the upa/sanils pace
progression theory.

I'd figure that the teams that actually DID make nationals last year
but didn't get the C1 invite have a decent chance of getting back, C1
or no. Don't you?

As noted elsewhere, NCAA status would be great for the women, but is
unlikely to help the men under the current arrangement. I don't see
anyway that open doesn't stay club for the foreseeable future, do you?

That's a terrible argument. Who wants to beat weaker competition. A
win is a win, but I remember beating Georgia 2 years ago when they
were number 4 and we were number 22. That feels better. I want to be
the best because I beat the best, not because I beat who's around.

I had hoped that the Arkansas boys would remain mum. Don't call my
team a "lower level team." Our "lower level team" eliminated Kansas
at Regionals and lost to Texas on Ultimate point at President's Day.
We welcome the chance to play Texas and Kansas in the future, if the
opportunity presents itself again.

Jacob, if your team is not lower level, there's no need to publicly
deny being lower level. The accomplishments of Arkansas ultimate
speak for themselves.

To the people suggesting that the invited team's captains make their
own google group or be in communication, I assure that we are. We have
been all communicating through email with each other since the moment
of the announcement. Tim if you haven't been receiving these emails
please let me know and I will and add you to the list.

I think the ultimate community needs to know that we are being very
rational with our conversation and have made it a point not to rush
into any decisions. We are looking at much more than what is best for
just our individual teams, we are looking into what is best for every
college team and the ultimate community in general.

There is still a lot of information to be sorted and hopefully the
continuing talks between Cultimate and the UPA will put us in a better
position to make a decision.

I would like to know if you rational discussion has included talking
to the captains fo the teams C1 has snubbed? Talking about them is one
thing, while talking with them is another.

-Keith
P.S. - I'm not a captain of a snubbed team... I just hope the cool
kids at the table are thinking of the 5-10 best teams that have been
left out.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I've been talking with Claremont.

All I can say right now is trust us - almost every other email
mentions that our considerations include not only what's best for our
team, but for other teams and for the college division as a whole.

Although they have not been cc'd on emails, I know several captains
have been in talks with other snubbed teams. (Myself included)

We are a community of friends, and the second something like this
happens you think of your friends on those teams that were left out.
Its natural to communicate with them and to gauge their reaction. This
weekend several included and non-included teams will be in Wisconsin
for No Wisconsequences. The included captains plan on having a pow-wow
together and will be inviting the snubbed teams captains to be part of
that discussion.

well then make the cut yankee.....if you and other teams, like

What cut? There weren't "cuts," there were two dudes in a room,
picking teams they liked.

Sort of. One a year, but nothing's really finalized. And that
doesn't mean shit to a current senior, and you know that. What would
your reaction have been if the Slickers had made quarters one year,
and the next year the UPA said "we're taking 25 teams, but you guys
don't get to go, because we don't like you enough." You'd have been
fucking pissed, that's what. If they gave you the opportunity to work
your way back in over the next few years but you were a year away from
hanging up your cleats, you'd have some legitimate gripes.

Zona's got a pretty legit beef here. It's like the women's team from
UCSD where they got banned from the series after a facebook incident.
Except Zona's ranked higher, and *there was no incident*.

If ever there was a "cut," Zona made it last year. Quit carrying
water for the bullshit list of teams just because you're stoked that
they're sticking it to the UPA. Show some intellectual honesty for
once. You'd probably be up in arms if UNCW hadn't been selected (and
they shouldn't have been - UCF finished higher in the series last
year, won the head-to-head, and missed the "cut").

well if they were all progressive and hardcore and i was a pussy
spirit zealot then i guess i would just have to face the facts.....or
jump ship. But if werent pussy spirit zealots.....which we
werent.....and we got unjustly snubbed, i wouldnt get
discouraged......i'd get disc courage.

and i'd get over it. In fact i'd probably look back years later and
realize how silly i was for getting overly serious about playing such
a non serious and joke of a sport in the first place.

well then they got a legit beef then. Maybe they voiced from the get

you're fucking stupid. seriously. shut up. your arguments don't
make any sense. you are just a dumbass who has no stake in all of
