Only for the sexy people, the 6th Annual Four Corners Tournament is
being held Saturday February 24 in Burlington (Shelburne) Vermont. In
addition to the Four Corners Tournament, the Shelburne Fieldhouse can
accommodate a 6v6 ultimate tournament for the purists.
Four Corners
Four Corners is a 3v3 disc game that was originally designed on a
mini-soccer field so that the facility rental would be cost effective.
Five years later, the game continues to realize a steady following and
the tournament is characterized by several unique traditions.
The flow of the game starts off like jumbo hot box, with the object
being catching a pass in the center circle. Once this is cleared, a
point is scored by using the disc to knock down one of the four cones
(inspired by Durango boot)- one placed at each of the four corners of
the outer rectangle that outlines the field of play. Conservative play
is working a cleared disc out to a receiver cutting to a cone for a
simple, disc-in-hand knockdown. Risky play is throwing a cleared disc
at a cone for a knockdown- this can be done from any point on the
field, but it is worth extra points for a throw made from the center
circle. The result is a game that is fast paced, that fine tunes a
thrower's ability to place leading passes to tightly contested spaces,
and improves a cutter's ability to see and create spaces for flow.
Defense is omni-directional and challenging. Each game is 32 minutes
which includes a 2-minute half. Play is continuous with subbing
performed from a tag point on the edge of the field.
Four Corners is a mixed game, 2M-1F format, no exceptions. Teams are
capped at 9 total players (note: 1 up from last year's 8) and are
typically 2-4 women and 5-7 men.
The cost for Four Corners is $200 per team for guaranteed five games.
6v6 Ulti
With the move to the Shelburne Fieldhouse, good-quality 6v6 ultimate
games can now run parallel to Four Corners. This is a perfect
opportunity for snowed in college teams to prepare for the spring
season in a way that typical school facilities for club sports (a
tennis court, a basketball court, etc) will not allow.
6v6 ultimate games for this tournament have also been altered to
maximize playtime for cost. Starting with standard ultimate rules, the
game is changed to be played continuously and against a clock. The only
pulls are at the start of the game and after half-time. Once a team
scores in the endzone, the disc is placed on the ground and the other
team immediately picks up the disc and works to score in the opposite
endzone. The result is that each team constantly works in the same
direction, like basketball and hockey. Also like hockey, subbing is on
the fly by tagout on the edge of the field. Games are 45 minutes with a
5 minute half.
6v6 ultimate will have divisions based on interest. There is time and
space for between four and six open, mixed (3m 3w), and women's teams.
In the event that too few teams sign up for a particular division, that
division will be cancelled.
6v6 ultimate is $185 per team for 3-4 games depending on the size of
the division.
The Location
The Shelburne Fieldhouse features a state-of-the-art playing surface,
OMNI-GRASS, that is 'impact-safer' and more cartilage-friendly than the
old astro-carpet. Mimicking a natural outdoor field with rubber blades
of 'grass' and tiny 'earth' pellets, it is perfectly suited for outdoor
cleats. Check out the Fieldhouse website for more details:
