YEA!!!!
This begs the question: Sell out to whom? Tell me, exactly which
corporations are out there waving dollars at ultimate?
And sell out how? If there are corporations waving money at ultimate,
what do they want us to do? Start using refs, right?
This reminds me of a conversation I used to have when I was in a
shitty garage band. Our drummer would say, "Man, I'm never going to
have my face on a billboard. I'm never going to sell out." And the
guitar player would say, "Not me, I'll sell out the first chance I
get." Well, it was a moot point because no one wanted to buy our
music.
Notwithstanding the questions about How and To Whom, let's talk about
Why. All I have to say to you is: Vanilla Ice. He sold out as soon and
as whole-heartedly as he could. He had no vision himself, so he did
whatever he was told. Wear this. Do your hair like that. Do this song.
Do this dance. He was milked for all he was worth, overexposed, now
he's a joke.
Is this what you want to see ultimate turn into? Is it worth it to
have ultimate on tv for a couple years if Cuervo turns it into some
cheesy beach game?
So let me ask you this: Suppose a company like Birkenstock wants to
put on a travelling ultimate showcase, but here's the catch: It's got
to be as hippie as possible. All SOTG, all the time. No refs, no
observers. Hype that SOTG! Players have to have nicknames like
"Burnout." Each team must have one dog on the line. Ultimate gets on
TV but it must become everything you hate.... do you sell out or not?
My view: Ultimate is the one of the fastest-growing sports in the U.S.
The money will come to us. We can do it our way.
Peace!

Tell me, exactly which
> corporations are out there waving dollars at ultimate?
the ones that are waiting for you to "sell out"......so they can
expose their product better......and "sell it"
-------------------------------------------------------

> And sell out how?
by conforming to industy standards and consumer expectations.
------------------------------------------------------
If there are corporations waving money at ultimate,
> what do they want us to do?
expose their products as effeciently and effectively as possible
------------------------------------------------
>Start using refs, right?
probably.....but thats just so the poriduct (sports entertainment)
will keep the attention of the consumers better
------------------------------------------------------------------------

well ultimate is HARDLY like your band then.......cause its already 9
million strong......as per sgma anyways.

well sure.....for everyone that sold out that made it there are a shit
ton that didnt. can i use taylor hicks as an example of someone that
sold out and "made it". I think you just have a very stigmatized view
of what "sell out" can mean. I use it in the "good way of sellin
out". like when somen one makes an INCREDIBLE DIVING BLOCK......and
you say "that gy sold out".
He sold out as soon and
> as whole-heartedly as he couldHe had no vision himself, so he did

actual sports and individual entertainers are two entirly different
things.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
>
> Is this what you want to see ultimate turn into?
what? the vanilla ice of sports? cant ya just give me an example of
an actual sport that sold out that is regretting it now? and make
sure to include HOW the sport sold out?
------------------------------------------------------------
Is it worth it to
> have ultimate on tv for a couple years if Cuervo turns it into some

maybe to the people that profit from it. was it worth it to the dead
when the played live on mtv........i think so.
---------------------------------------------------
>
> So let me ask you this: Suppose a company like Birkenstock wants to

kinda a stretch, but ok
---------------------------------------------
but here's the catch: It's got

so ya would really have to change a thing then........except maybe you
guys might have to grow some hair........and wear some tie dye
uniforms.........uhmmmmmm.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
All SOTG, all the time. No refs, no
> observers.
like i said, basically change nuthin
----------------------------------------------------------
Hype that SOTG! Players have to have nicknames like
> "Burnout."
dont forget about your pregame hippy spirit circles..........and youll
definitely need some spliffs being rolled and smoked.......which means
you WONT be attracting too many youth participants, kinda a dumb move
marketwise.......but its berkinstocks dime
------------------------------------------------------------------------
>Each team must have one dog on the line.
be carful......the dogs are likely to steal the show......next thing
you know berkinstock will be sponsoring the K9 disc circut
--------------------------------------------------------
Ultimate gets on
> TV but it must become everything you hate.
but what it must become is what it already is........so how could i
hate it any more then than i already do now.
------------------------------------------------------------
>... do you sell out or not?
FUCK YEA
------------------------------------------------
>
> My view: Ultimate is the one of the fastest-growing sports in the U.S.

why not do what you can to speed up the process though. I mean,
should have the uoa never have formed for that same reason. do you
know what happens when you become complacent on the ultimate field?
where exactly does serindipidy end and hard work and effort begin?
>We can do it our way.
whats "your way"? without refs (or the other obvious bells and
whistles)? NOT BLOODY LIKLEY!!!!! even the most hard core spirit
zealot dosent really believe that ultimate will go big time with out a
normal fully active referee system.
ONE MORE QUESTION........what WILL the berckenstock CORPORATION do
when an ole fashion, full blown ult-debate breaks out. NOT in that it
will kill the entertainment value of the sporting event(thats a givin)
BUT in the inconsistancies that will be revealed from traditional
views of how hippies are SUPPOSED TO BEHAVE (all peace and love-ish)
and the way ultimate players have ALWAYS HAVE BEHAVED (like little
spoiled children) in reality???? Do you think berckenstock will renew
that contract?
The irony here is that refs will make you appear more "spirited" AND
vastly eimprove the product on an entertainment level,
so........berckenstock would be wise to do their homework on the
actual factuals of ultimats exposure capabilities AND the image that
they want to present prior to going to contract. and, ya know, i'm
not so sure that there is even enough of a "hippy segment" left for
them to waste their time marketing to them......thus, like ultimate,
theyd be wise to modernize their product AND their marketing approach
to increasing sales and "selling out" THEMSELVES.
so, berkenstock using the "hippy angle" to successfully market their
product is just a stupid AND UNREALISTIC as ultimate making any
progress using that same angle.
...turn it into a reality TV series and make a killing?
now THATS the vannilia ice route right there. Of course i doubt youde
attact any sports fans as viewers with that angle.......just dont
forget to take that into account.........cause once you go down that
"reality tv" road theres no gettin back on the sports entertainment
road.
Many would argue that the current success of Mixed Martial
Arts is mostly due to the popularity of their reality show:
"The Ultimate Fighter"... so it's certainly been proven
that sports and reality TV can happily co-exist.

Not only that, but adult dodgeball leagues, run by various businesses
and organizations FOR PROFIT sprouted up immediately after the
DodgeBall movie came out, even though the movie was not meant to be
serious at all. It simply drew attention to the sport/game. Too bad
Ultimate doesn't have any ties to a big-time Hollywood producer to
sell such an idea to, huh?
I'll use the small communities of Lincoln and Omaha, NE as a local
anecdote (and I don't mean any negativity toward my brothers and
sisters in the Omaha Ultimate community; they are undoubtedly
fantastic people). While serving on the Boards for both the Lincoln
and Omaha leagues, discussions about growth and finances are
commonplace.
In Lincoln, we went out and found some generous sponsors which allowed
us to buy lots of shwag for our players, host free hat tourneys with
food, rent official field space through the city, and still have funds
left over for which we will use for rainy days and future events
(charity tourneys, youth development, etc.). It has also allowed us to
build a little clout in the community. Oh yeah, we simply put a small
logo from our sponsor on the side of our discs and shwag.
For the Omaha league, we discussed similar sponsorship options, but
the discussion stalled at the cocept of "selling out" to a sponsor,
with some of the committee saying it might be a "deal breaker" for
some members of the community if we included a sponsor's logo on a
disc or shirt. As a result, Omaha still has no sponsors, and even
though the league has been around longer and still has a few more
players than Lincoln (although the Lincoln/Omaha communities share
many of the same players and ideas), the Omaha league still
unofficially squats on unpaid fields for league play, does not offer
as much to the players or community as a whole, and is limited in
growth potential.
I WOULDNT. In fact, i never even saw one episode.......but i did
purchase that last brock lezner fight

> "The Ultimate Fighter"... so it's certainly been proven

Proven????? because you SPECULATE "many would argue..."????? i dont
think so. In fact i would argue that the show was a result of the
SPORTS success? If starting a reality show is the formula for a
sports success, what in the fuck is ultimate waiting for. thing
is.....IT ISNT!!!!
not to mention being hypocrates........unless they live in a tee pee's
and generate their own electricity.....(point of op). from your
description though, the omaha group is more in line with the way
ultimate and ultimate players are generally perceived by most "normal
folk".......the deadheads of the sports industry. Not the reputation
i'd recomend IF this sport ever wants to become legit.
