Fury and Traffic each sent split squads. As a result, many women
split their time in between the four women's club teams in the Bay
Area, often switching teams during byes and packing the day fully.
For the college teams there, it was a nice warm-up for the Series.
For the showcase game on Saturday night, Fury and Traffic combined
their X and Y teams for the first USA vs. Canada match-up of the
season. Traffic was subbing 34 players and Fury had 26 players to
rotate through the game, so each point was played with full intensity
as no one had fatigue as an excuse. After Traffic scored the first
point with no turnovers, Fury pushed ahead with a few defensive breaks
and took half 8-4. In the second half, Fury capitalized on some
Traffic miscues and finished off the game 11-5 (I believe). For the
first time I can remember, DUI didn't serve food during the showcase
game, so there was a smaller crowd than usual suffering against the
cold. It was nice having both an open and a women's game being
played--another first at DUI.
In Pool J, Fury X won all its games to take the pool outright.
Traffic X came in second. Superfly beat two club teams, Slackjaw and
Mayhem, to take 3rd in the pool.
In Pool K, there was a three way tie for first between Zeitgeist,
Traffic Y, and Fury Y. Zeitgeist beat Fury Y 14-10 in the first round
on Saturday, but ZG lost to Traffic Y 15-9. Fury Y beat Traffic Y
15-13. Based on point diff, Traffic came in 1st, followed by Fury,
followed by ZG.
After pool play, the pool winners went straight into finals. The wind
had picked up considerably for this game, so it was all about scoring
in the upwind endzone. Traffic Y stepped up to the task by scoring
upwind right away and jumped to a 2-0 lead. Fury X scored its
downwinder and then converted upwind to tie the game up. Trading out,
Fury took half by one. In the second half, Fury scored an extra
upwinder to win the game.
Fury Y and Traffic X played in the 3/4 game, which followed a similar
progression. Fighting for upwind goals, Traffic took a lead before
Fury was able to convert upwind for the advantage and eventually Fuy
won the shortened game (many Traffic women had early flights to
catch). Both of these windy Fury-Traffic games were plagued by
turnovers, both from the wind and from fatigue after a long weekend.
However, the number of spectacular plays (layout-Ds, huge skies,
pinpoint hucks) that players on all four split squads made despite the
wind and fatigue was impressive. Clearly both teams are picking
players from a talented pool and the on-going rivalry will be
exciting!
In the 5/6 game between Superfly and Zeitgeist, the Stanford women
took half 8-7 against the club team before ZG buckled down and went on
a run to win the game 10-8. After a disappointing Centex, playing so
well against club players has got to be a huge confidence boost for
Stanford. Not a moment too soon with Sectionals coming up this
weekend and NW Regionals looming large up ahead.
