All region players - female
Sara Jacobi
New England region. I haven't had much contact with too many teams
other than those in the Metro Boston section, but I'll do what I can.
Hopefully other people can add to this list, because I just picked
players that I knew enough to write about. Also these aren't in any
meaningful order, and I wrote more about my own teammates because I
know more about them :)
Mackenzie Fazekas - A super senior at Boston University, Mackenzie has
the power to be a game changer for Boston University. Her forehand
huck is pretty much unstoppable, and she has the ability and control
to place the disc wherever she wants on the field -- hammers, hucks,
scoobers, break throws, you name it, she's got the throw. (sidenote:
she also has the most amazing fireball I've ever seen). She was voted
all-region last year, and her experience on Brute Squad this year has
made her even more solid.
Christie Kim - A senior co-captain at Boston University, Christie uses
her athleticism to not only shut down everyone she covers but to lay
out like crazy and come down with discs that make people wonder, "How
the hell did she catch that?" While she handles for BU, Christie is
extremely versatile and we often don't know what position she should
play on BU because she's good at everything. She also has a great
backhand break, makes good decisions with the disc, and can take
ANYBODY up the line. She also plays for Brute Squad.
Stephanie "Arker" Barker - Northeastern's recent successes at Pres Day
and Roll call is definitely due to Stephanie's big role on the team
this year. A really versatile player, I've seen Arker roast people
deep, burn people with quick in cuts AND break the mark I/O at will.
Arker was voted all region last year, and got great club experience
last club season by playing with the new mixed team Quiet Coyote, who
was one of the top mixed teams in NE last year.
Courtney Moores - Another Northeastern player responsible for
Northeastern's recent top 2 finishes this season, Chelsea plays really
hard and is unstoppable as a dump.
Tabitha Bennett - Yet another Northeastern handler, Tabitha is a huge
part of the Northeastern offense and is responsible for the way
Northeastern can effortlessly maintain possession while working the
disc all the way up the field. She's really quick, has great hands
and plays really hard.
Leila Tunnel - A sophomore at Connecticut College, Leila is building
the Conn. College team from scratch, running tournaments and the
works. A veteran of Junior Worlds, women's club teams Ozone and Brute
Squad (her current club team) Leila is a nasty handler with killer
deep throws and deserves recognition. She was also voted all-region
last year, and is just a solid all-around player.
Lauren "Ralph" Nelson - A senior co-captain (?) on Wellesley this
year, Ralph is a great athlete and knows how to take control of a
game. She's aggressive and works really hard on the field, and is an
excellent deep cutter. Lauren also has club experience, making it
all the way to nationals with the mixed team the Bashing Pinatas.
Steph Wong - Umass - A former Andover High grad, Steph's a strong
member of the Umass team this year, and has solid throws and great
patience as a handler. I've seen her take control of the disc in zone
O on a windy day and work it all the way up the field.
Dory Zipperstein - Last year's FOTY, Dory contributes so much to
Brandeis' offense. Her ability to put the disc anywhere on the field
with great accuracy is amazing to watch, and her quick moves as a dump
get her open every single time. She also makes great bids and has
great hands. She's also another NE college player that plays for
Brute Squad.
Judy Winglee - one of the many excellent players on Tufts. Although
my team has only played them once so far this year, I thought Judy
stood out for her great bids on offense and defense and her overall
athleticism.
Erika Swanson - A 1st year grad student on MIT, Erika is fast as
lighting and is a huge play maker for MIT this year. She's extremely
versatile and athletic, and she makes shutting someone down on defense
look downright easy. She's got consistent throws and can break the
mark easily. She's also a solid D-line cutter for Brute Squad.
Sally Lambert - A senior at Williams, Sally's an extremely athletic
player. While I haven't seen her play yet this year, Williams
finished strong in NE last year and I expect her to lead them to a
strong finish this season as well.

You did a great job of breaking down the NE allstars but you left
yourself out. I once saw you run down and layout for a huck by Jono.
Most guys get overthrown by him but not you. Seriously guys. The NE
region is often overlooked. These ladies suffer through conditions
that you can't imagine and always field competitive teams. If you want
to get excited about womens ultimate make your way to devens later
this year.

Secondly, I'd like to make a correction on behalf of my co-captain
Sara. In Courtney's description, Sara mistakenly wrote "Chelsea"
instead of "Courtney." Just to clarify, she's talking about
Courtney...and I actually think there are a couple of Chelsey's on NU
too which makes it funnier.
Lastly, I need to give some recognition to the person who started this
thread b/c she is definitely one of the more dominant players in the
region (try to look past the fact that we play on the same team).
Sara Jacobi - Just a downright amazing athlete. A senior and co-
captain on Boston University's team, she has the ability to chase down
any huck and come up with a score. Similarly, no team can score long
if Sara is playing deep deep. Her aggressiveness and amazing ups make
her a huge deep threat. She is also an extremely versatile player in
being able to be our strongest cutter/deep to being an excellent and
reliable handler. She has great break throws, averages about 4 hand
blocks a game, and is a true difference maker on the field. She also
plays for Brute Squad.

Wesleyan's Laura Masulis. I played with her in high school, she was a
junior nationals player that went to Finland back in 2005, she's got a
lot of sick breaks, real fast, real good. Show her some love!

Indiana, is an amazing player and captain. She's a lefty that's got
great fakes and ridiculous hucks. Every time she fakes backhand, a
girl shouts "up" and turns around! Julz is incredibly knowledgeable
about the game, fast as hell, extremely versatile... and she's got
nice boobies.
Purdue has Jess Sloan, #11. She is their captain and main handler.
As a lefty, she has incredible control of the disc, handling
especially well in the wind. Sloan is a great captain with much
spirit of the game.
Purdue also has Kami Larson, #76, who is a really versatile player.
She is fast and makes great cuts, she can handle extremely well,
putting the disc wherever she wants, and she has great field sense.
Kami wins games for Purdue.
Michigan has a lot of great players, but their captain Surge would be
the most stand-out in my opinion.
Illinois has Ashley Chan, #14. I don't know a whole lot about her
except she's their captain, she's fast, and she hand-blocked me last
year.

Wesleyan should both get serious consideration. Wesleyan was a
sectional champion in 2007, surprising Yale and Brown, and at
sectionals, Laura (with, admittedly, a stronger team around her) more
than held her own against Leila Tunnell.
I would expect Wesleyan to make some noise this year at regionals,
under their new coach Cameron Shelton.

East Region). I had the pleasure of playing with her for three years
(both on Ithaca's Kweezy and Bashing Pinatas--a nationals mixed-club
team) and each year she proceeds to impress the heck out of me. This
year she's Ithaca's captain and not only has she again pumped up her
game, but she taught herself how to handle due to a significant
portion of the handlers graduating last year. I've seen her not only
lay-out D cutters but the dump as well. She's gotten lay-out
callahans, hand blocks, skies pretty much everyone and their mother,
can huck incredibly well and inspires everyone to play their hardest.
Kweezy would not exist as a team without her wonderful spirit and
intensity. Anyone who has played with her and against her knows she
is fun-loving and a great competitor.

Juliette does have ridiculous backhand fakes.
I believe Kami was freshman of the year in 2005.
Dena is a great player as well, she's just being modest. She's always
intense, quick, her throws are geat and her cuts are great. She's
always a guarantee iso for a score in the endzone.

thread for south women's... but what about everyone else?? There are
2 or 3 more regions we have yet to hear from. come on women's teams
hype up your players! Who deserves all region this year?? this is a
great way to get the word out about people that deserve it that may
not be the most well-known but are still deserving.

Shira has been a standout handler for the consistantly talented and
deep squad at Tufts University. She has incredible throws with
precision that are undoubtedly at the top of the region and rival the
country's best. Over the years, she has developed into a distict
leader on the field. She is quiet force on the field, but defines the
phrase "lead by example." Her technique is seemingly flawless as she
regularly fakes her defenders to the ground. She produces open and
breakside hucks on command. Her calm demeanor and patient offense
often go underrated, but she undoubtledly ties together Tufts offense
more this year than ever before. Last year, along side recent
graduate Caroline Chow and fellow senior Judy Winglee, they anchored
their energetic squad an 11th place finish at Nationals.
Leila Tunnell (Connecticut College)
As it's been said before, Leila has arguably single-handedly developed
and produced her team and Conn College, and has never looked back.
Her leadership skills and experience are far beyond her years, being
only a sophomore. She exemplifies what our sport is about, being a
fierce competitor while upholding the highest standard of spirit and
respect. Her club experience (Ozone, Brute Squad) have earned her the
respect from everyone she plays with or against. She also was a
member of the 2006 Jr. Nationals Team which brought home Gold. She
earned All-Region recognition last year as a freshmen, and has done
nothing but improved her own play, that of her teammates, and she
definitely deserves to be recognized once again.

Quick note: this list doesn't include anyone from UCSD since they are
suspended for the season. Otherwise, Laura Wishingrad (Beignet) would
definitely have a lock on one of the spots. This list mainly outlines
everyone that I think is worth considering and I could easily have
missed a player that should be in the conversation.
UCLA BLU - BLU has a number of players worth considering. Their
senior class is small but full of outstanding players. I think all of
the below are worthy but it will likely boil down to Taz, Kix and
Gizmo.
Angie 'Taz' Sanan - There will be more written about her later, but
she's a fantastic handler.
Andi 'Gizmo' Coleman - She's one of the top defenders in the game.
Her leadership skills provide an extra dimension.
Cheryl 'Kix' Prideaux - She's a very special receiver, a gifted
athlete and poses matchup problems for almost every team. She was the
difference maker in the semis at Stanford Invite.
Annie 'Fresh' Banks - She is the fire on the team and she's really
stepped up her handling game to accompany her fierce defense.
Yvonne 'Cosmo' Leung - Cosmo is a very speedy receiver and gives BLU a
very good 1-2 punch with her and Kix.
UCSB BURNING SKIRTS - They have four standouts that I've seen. Erin
Mordecai might belong in this conversation but I haven't seen her play
yet.
Katie Barry - I think she's a shoo in. The article I wrote says it
all.
Andrea Romano - Based on playing ability and leadership skills, she
should also be a shoo in, but she's been out for the bulk of the
spring. This poses the question -- does All-Region reward the spring
season or play during Sectionals/Regionals? If I had to vote today, I
would have to leave her off, but if she is healthy for both Sectionals
and Regionals and comes up big, then she would get my vote.
Carolyn Finney - Sophomore sensation whose lack of height belies her
strong deep game and aggressive throws.
Kaela Jorgensen - She's a very strong defender and receiver with a
great combination of height and speed.
USC HELLIONS OF TROY - I obviously have a bias here and I think there
are a slew of great Hellions to choose from, but here are four players
that I think most would agree are worth consideration.
Alice 'Swift/Balls' Chen - She has the best nickname in the world.
She's also very athletic and a strong defender. She's been critical
in the evolution of USC into a serious program.
Anne 'Bambi' Ohliger - She is constantly open and a fun player to
watch on the field.
Mary Kate 'Uzi' Hogan - Her throws are big and is one of the toughest
players out there, both physically and mentally.
Lindsey 'Curly' Cross - She kills people. She kills everyone. Idaho
said so.
COLORADO KALI - Kali has a number of good players, and I'd be remiss
if I didn't give props to Heather Waugh, Courtney Verhaalen and Sam
Johnson, but I think JFast and Amy are their best candidates to make
All-Region.
Julie Fast - One of the best defenders in the region, she's also a
great cutter.
Amy Smith - Formerly of Emory, Amy is one of the best hybrid players
in the region.
ARIZONA SCORCH - At least one of these two Scorch players deserves to
be on the All-Region team this year. People tend to forget about
Arizona because... well, it's in the middle of Arizona. At least they
aren't New Mexico... (JK)...
Julia Tenen - She's a fierce defender and competitor. There will be
more about her in an upcoming article.
Jodi McCloskey - Everybody notices Jodi because she's close to six
feet tall, moves really well and has solid throws.
From the next tier of teams, here are a few people worth
consideration.
Sarah Payne (Caltech) - Everyone who plays Caltech knows that you have
to game plan for her. She moves exceptionally well for her size (six
feet tall and big body) and she has some of the most powerful throws
in the women's game.
Anna Mebust (Claremont) - She runs the show for the Greenshirts this
year and has been leading the rebuilding effort. They have some solid
components to perform well at Regionals and contend next year.
Iris Leung (UC-Irvine) - She's one of the quickest players I've seen
and is helping the Grass Ninjas develop into a solid program.
I hope this serves as a helpful guide for potential voters at the
Southwest Regionals. I think every Regional Coordinator should print
out a program with team rosters and jersey numbers to help
spectators. I also think someone should write a quick guide including
players to watch (either compiled by an outside party or objectively
by teams listing their personal recommendations).

Handler on Vermont with the orange hat. Great break throws! very
talented handler. I'm sorry I didn't get your name. Hopefully someone
else knows.
Nora from Dartmouth. Excellent hucks and impossible to shut down on
the dump. There were also two or three other very talented players on
Dartmouth... maybe someone from Dartmouth could fill in this obvious
gap, considering they are one of the top teams in the NE.

On Dartmouth, Macy(?) has to be up there... in the couple games I saw
Princess Layout play, they were pretty good when she was not on the
field, and unstoppable when she was on. Doesn't hurt that she's a
lefty, and had perfectly placed hucks even in heavy wind.
And on wellesley-- in addition to Ralph, keep an eye out for Snitch
(#88, the tiny asian with pigtails and a trucker hat [as opposed to
the tiny asian with underwear and a trucker hat on her head, or the
tiny asian with the sick layouts, both of whom also are looking
ridiculously good]). she has speed and the ability to break the mark
like it wasn't there, as well as a fantastic field sense--she quietly
takes control of the offense when she's on the field, making good
things happen. again, in the games that i saw wellesley play, she was
at the center of just about every big play.

Amanda Davis is back from Rutgers, she was on the squad last year.
Glad to see those girls in the series again.
Charlie Katie Mercer is a force down at Maryland. Tough matchup for
anybody to shut down. It will be criminal if she doesn't get an all
region spot.
Freshmen, for Open or Women's?
I've never been one to trumpet my own teammates or people from my
school, but I did need to give out a shout out to Shino Yoshen from
American. They may not be a showcase team in the region, but anybody
who has played against them recognizes how effective she is on the
field, in every capacity. She gets the big sky Ds, pulls in the tough
discs in the air, and has all the big throws. She's a hard worker who
is also extremely spirited. Its hard to tell she's a freshmen from
both her ability and her leadership. She might not be the best
freshmen lady in the region, but she definitely deserves to be a part
of the conversation.

It's Masi Rooke you are talking about and I definitely agree.
And to add on...
I think the posts about the NE region have overlooked two of the top
teams in our region: Dartmouth and Tufts.
Dartmouth: Masi Rooke and Nora Johnson are two amazing handlers that
are clear front runners from Dartmouth however I wouldn't overlook
Rohre Titcomb and Molly Roy who are both outstanding players.
Tufts: Shira has already been mentionned for her throwing ability
however I would also like to throw Maya Jackson and Julie Furbush into
the running as well.

(Northeastern), Laura Masulis (Wesleyan), Sara Jacobi (BU), Kat

All-Region: Preeti Nalavade
A current co-captain of the Roses she is the leader when it come to
the deep game. Her hucks are unstoppable, accurate, and man can they
FLY! Not only are her throws excellent but she is fast and athletic.
She bids for anything and has solid hands. A true leader on defense,
I can't count the number of handblocks she's made in tight
situations. Truely an all-around player that deserves some
recognition.
FOTY: Jackie Booth
An amazing addition to the Roses this year, Jackie has continued her
dominace as a high school ultimate player with her to Cornell. A
stellar handler, Jackie has the hucks, breaks, and is essentail to the
Roses' offense. She is tall, fast and takes the handler position to a
new level when she starts running. Her speed and eyes on the field
make her a door as a deep, nothing gets by. Even as a freshman,
Jackie's leadership skills and great personality ahd taken the Roses
to a ne wlevel this year.

Charlie Katie Mercer
Firstly, while Delaware hasn't performed particularly well this year
thus far, but that is not for lack of talent on their roster. I know
Brady is a quick ass handler and there are several other girls that
definitely make you work on the field (whose names I don't know
because for the first time in UMD's history we've gone an entire year
without matching up full squads before Sectionals). Someone that
knows names better should hype them.
Rutgers has Vanessa and Amanda, who are the anchors of their team
UPenn's Raja should definitely make All-Region. I don't think I saw

sure what UPenn would do without her there to control their offense.
Georgetown's Lindsay Trice is not to be forgotten about, quick and
tenacious receiver.
Anne Mercier (Ottawa) tends to get all the credit, but she is
supported by a very strong team. I wanted to highlight Alex Benedict
and Kathyn Pohran as some of the other go-to Ottawa girls. Both have
experience on a national level (Junior Worlds and/or UPA Nationals),
and can get stuff done.
Maryland (admitted bias)
Molly Rose - yet to enter talks, but not for lack of action on the
field, hand block queen, probably had more layout D's than the rest of
our team combined at Roll Call, solid handler
Jess Trinh - has gotten mentioned in some of the Callahan talks but
not yet in all region (go figure). She's a lefty handler and breaks
at will. I think the difference between Jess and many of the other
college players is that she fundamentally understands the game better
than most anyone I've seen. She trusts her teammates to do what they
need to do so things just get done.
Amy Hudson - very tall handler, gorgeous flat hucks, very very
consistent, great handler movements
Heather Smith (Citation) - always explodes after throwing the disc
making her very difficult to defend, fast and quick, always runs
through, very hard to defend on a dump
Not ME but players to mention
UNC's Kate Scott should definitely be AC All-region, her lefty throws
are phenomenal, and her hucks consistent even in massive gusty wind
Illinois handler with the pigtails and the hat that layouts for
everything, Illinois' offense runs through her
Wakeforest's Lucia Derks, I really don't think Wake would have
anything without her, definitely the star and main cog of their team
Wellesley's Ralph - Bashing Pinatas player, so you know she's going to
not only be good but very fun and spirited

A little upsetting, but I have no doubt the AC will prove their worth
in the upcoming series.
Throw Laura Manson (Duke) in there for AC FOTY as well. She's a true
first-year player who consistently amazes everyone on the field with
her seemingly impossible grabs, whether she is in the air or on the
ground. To add to this, she shows incredible discretion in her
throws, exhibiting a level of maturity and field sense that takes most
players several years to develop. Keep an eye on her over the next
few weeks...

As for the starting seven, I also agree that Shannon O'Malley is
deserving of a spot. I think the starting seven was a bit handler
heavy and I would like to have seen more cutters listed like O'Malley
or Cheryl 'Kix' Prideaux of UCLA.

your post regarding potential AC Womens All-Region players. I am also
pretty bad about remembering both names and faces, but I'll mention a
few people on teams that we play on a regular basis.
Wake Forest:
Lucia Derks -- Obviously. Though the rest of Ruckus is often
overlooked, it can't be emphasized how huge Lucia is on the field.
She throws monster hucks, then plays great deep defense and skies
people much taller than her on a regular basis.
Don't know names of other players on Ruckus, but I'd defer to what
Lucia already wrote about them...
Florida:
To repeat what Lucia already said, I'll mention Kristen Lamm and Cathy
Marshall. Though Lamm isn't traditionally a handler, she has had to
step into that position and has adjusted nicely. Wish I could see her
cut more... she's just so damn good at it. They both lay out for
anything. Also, Allison (don't know her last name?). I used to think
she was just really tall, but she's almost impossible to throw around
in the cup and catches everything.
Emory:
Chelsea (don't know her last name either) -- only a sophomore, plays
some other sport in the fall but comes out in the spring for ultimate
and dominates. Gets run-through D's like no other. She will help
carry the future of that team.
Suzanne Greenfield (better known as Q) -- Has really come into her own
in the past few years. With the graduation of many senior players
after last year, Q has really stepped it up. Her throws are huge, and
she lays out consistently on defense (and offense, for that matter).
Being a lefty doesn't hurt either.
Jennie Yang -- Of course. She's fast as hell, even with an ankle that
has been recovering since January. Similar to Lamm from Florida, she
is not traditionally a handler but has had to step into that role as
one of the more experienced players on the team. She loves running
deep though, so watch out.
Georgia:
I definitely have the most to say here, since it's my team.
Jessica Manley (JAM) -- Even with a weak hamstring, still one of the
fastest people around. She can get open whenever she wants and makes
consistent throws. She's cool in high-pressure situations.
Sarah Owenby (Red) -- As one of my teammates once said, there are
enough pictures of Red skying other people to fill an entire Facebook
album. She's sick as a deep defender, and though she's not
technically a handler, she has some of the best deep throws on the
team.
Allison Snow -- Snow has really hit a completely new level this year.
She is the best cutter on the Hodawgs, and she'll turn and fire it
deep as soon as she catches it. She's also a great defender, both on
(wo)man defense and in the zone. You will not catch anything easily
(or at all) if she is guarding you.
CiCi Cheng -- A great handler, definitely don't be deceived by her
(lack of) height. She will also lay out any time the opportunity
arises.
Sarah Baker -- A D-machine. Period.
Sorry I don't have more input for other teams, but definitely hype
your own!

players, so here's some hype for more deserving women. My top 5 picks
are easy, but it gets murkier after that.
Top 5:
Kira Frew (UBC) is an obvious choice. She's already been voted to the
All-Region team for the past two seasons and has only continued to
dominate as the go-to handler on one of the top teams in the
continent.
Same with Shannon O'Malley (Washington). Last year's FOTY and All-
Region pick, O'Malley has become even more dangerous as an offensive
threat this season. Her ability to get open and make big plays for UW
has other teams constantly scrambling to try to contain her.
Claire Suver's (UW) absence last year at Regionals was probably the
biggest reason UW did not manage to qualify for Nationals. She's back
from her ACL surgery and leads the team's handling core with confident
hucks, breaks, and zone offense.
Emily Damon (Stanford) is another handler who makes this happen for
her team. This season has seen Emily fully step into a dominating
role on O, using both her quickness and throws to generate offense for
Superfly. On D, she is also a powerhouse, able to play great shut-
down D and also get the ho-block when necessary.
I first saw Cree Howard (Berkeley) play at DUI while trying out for
Fury and I was blown away by her athleticism. On Cal, she takes the
toughest defensive match-ups and uses her height and speed to make
plays on D. A lot of Cal's success will depend on whether Cal's
throwers are able to hit Cree as often as she's open.
Other potential nominees (in no particular order):
Jess "Venus" Hyun (Oregon) is an all-around player that has been a
huge pick-up for Oregon this season. She is a consistent player who
moves the disc well and plays with a ton of heart. As a fifth year
player, she sees the field well and is aggressive with her cuts and
throws. She also comes up with big plays in the clutch on defense.
Molly Suver (Oregon) makes things happen for Oregon with her hucks and
break-mark throws. Her experience in the juniors circuit and on Riot
has helped her play with confidence and poise.
Jenny Founds (Stanford) is the perfect complement to Emily Damon and
this duo often sends teams reeling. Jenny plays with an intensity and
fire that is great to watch and she has no regard for her body as she
bids on O and D.
Liz Cassel (Stanford) is an experienced leader for Superfly whose
tireless cutting creates and capitalizes on space downfield. She
continues to take on a bigger and bigger role for the team as a go-to
cutter and top defender.
Nat Wu (Berkeley) injured her knee at the Stanford Invite and her
absence was a major blow to Cal's season thus far. If she plays again
during the Series, she could be the ingredient the team needs to turn
its year around. Her quick handler cutting guarantees that she is
always open and her throws are precise and consistent.
Tory Hislop (UBC) is another key aspect of the Thunderbirds' offense.
Her hucks have been the difference in numerous games and she is able
to hit the team's fast receivers almost anywhere on the field. Her
absence at the Stanford Invite was one of the reasons UBC ran out of
gas by the finals against UCLA.

literally people saying "I should be all-region" but a lot of hype of
ones teammates. yeah, support for your teammates is great and I
definitely have posted in support of past or current teammates, but I
encourage people to make cases for other teams' players in the same
manner they're often making it for their own. Saying things like
"She's got great throws, and gets tons of D's and blah blah blah" will
more or less fall on deaf ears if you are the coach/captain/underling
of said player. If you can get the respect of an opponent enough to
say, "Wow, so-and-so from State University was amazing with great
throws and skys!" then it has more weight.

Delaware's been pretty unlucky in our choice of tournaments this
spring (Terminus, where we played 2 games, and HOTI, where we only had
games on Sunday). Our school's winter session and bizarrely late start
to the spring semester didn't help us much either. So I can't say that
I've really seen many girls play this spring in our region, but after
Sectionals last weekend, here's my nods for UDel and UMD players...
DELAWARE:
Our captains, Maura Brady and Jessie Morris, were on the field nearly
100% of the time in the finals against UMD, along with senior Krista
Winalski. Brady is an insanely quick cutter and can handle extremely
well too. Jessie is a solid handler presence on the field all the time
and has been for the past 3 years that I've played with her.
Krista...what can't I say about her? She's fast and strong, grabs
discs that I can't even imagine being able to catch, and plays sick D
(especially as the deep in our zone).
MARYLAND:
I played with Citation and Clara last summer and both are very quick
cutters and did a great job against us defensively at sectionals.
Charlie was a solid handler who played very physical D. Jess Trinh,
who only played about half of the game due to a dislocated shoulder,
had some great breaks against us. There was another cutter who matched
up with Brady really well, sorry I don't know her name...Kelly I
think?
Sorry I don't have much to say about anyone else, but most likely, we
didn't play you this year, or I don't know your team well enough to
know any names.

All Region:
NYU has two women who standout to me. Linh (# 00, not sure how you
spell her name), a short asian often wearing a backwards hat is strong
handler with excellent field sense and a nice low flick break. Often
cutters don't get as much recognition for all region but # 7, another
asian (sorry I don't know your name), was a quick, smart player who
set a tough mark and also threw very well.
Rutgers has a really good all around player with some sick layout Ds
who also is the primary handler and can mark up deep. I don't think
she took a point off all game. She's white, has brown hair, maybe
5'5, sorry also don't remember her name.
Penn - Raja - good handler - runs their squad from what i can tell
Ottawa has a number of strong players. Anne Mercier gets a lot of
talk, with reason, for her long history in the game and sick full
field hammer. Also, 8 or 88 (depending on shorts or shirt) is quick,
tall, and has good hands in the back field. There is another handler,
who also played for the capitals, maybe 5'8, lighter brownish hair,
who is really strong.
FOTY:
I don't really know who are freshman out there on other teams -
sorry! I do want to put a few names out there from Cornell though.
We were lucky to get 2 freshman with significant highschool and club
experience coming in. Kelsey Cowles, short now blue-haired girl (26),
with amazing long and short throws, flick and backhand. She is also
really quick and moves the disc well in the field. Also, Jackie
Booth, tall, brown hair, deserves some mention as another strong
handler who helped run our offense. Finally, Sterling Dumas (13),
blonde tall mid/deep, never played ultimate before August, learned
everything from scratch and played significant minutes at regionals.
She is a huge asset to our team - accurate throws, fast as can be, and
good in the air, a real natural at the sport - looking forward to
seeing her play for 3 more years.

the heart of the NYU's offense, she has thrown the vast majority of
the Violet Femmes' goals this season. She's also super quick, and as
you said, has great field sense and low break throws.
#7 is Jen Lau, a grad student. She's one of the most athletic and
experienced players in Region. If there was an All Defensive Team,
she would be on it -- she had numerous point-blocks and layout Ds at
Regionals, including a layout Callahan goal.
The Rutgers player to which you referred is Amanda Davis. She has
been a fixture on the Metro East All Region team for several years,
and is definitely deserving once again.

#8/88 would be Kate Crump, also plays for the Capitals, top notch
gritty cutter and defender, fast, and physical.
The other handlers, both key Capitals players with killer disc skills,
opening up the field with breaks and playing excellent shut down
defence are Danielle Fortin & Alex Benedict ... also several other
ottawa girls who can run with anyone out there! (Sonia, Shannon, etc,
too many names to list!).

Katie "Charlie" Mercer (Maryland): Although she humbly left herself
off the above list, she is the talk of the town this year. Maryland
won the jackpot this year with Katie as a transfer student. From what
I can see she is the best player on the field. Her team looks up to
her and expects her to make the game winning plays. She is an awesome
handler but is also an unstoppable cutter and deep.
Lucy Gillespie (Pitt): A clear leader on and off the field, and their
go-to player. Led Pitt to a 3rd place finish and I feel very few
players in the ME could shut her down. Great speed, powerful throws,
and an awesome deep defender.
Amanda "Virb" (Pitt) is a great handler with nationals level
experience. Tall, reliable, and has a great knowledge of the game.
Pitt would not have been as good as they are this year without her.
Molly (Maryland): I think she is a sophmore this year but still runs
MD's offense. She has great throws, cuts and poise with the disc.
She never gets flustered, and always plays 150%. I think I saw her get
multiple layout Ds against Pitt and possibly Ottawa too.
Anne Mercier and Alex "JRob" Benedict (Ottawa): Have not personally
played them, but their team clearly dominated at Regionals and
exhibited seemingly effortless flow. Expect great things from both of
these ladies at Nationals.
I feel the above ladies are all clear picks for the ME All-Region
team, all leading top teams in one of the most competitive fields the
ME has seen in awhile. Other excellent contenders and impact players
for their teams:
Raha (UPenn): Runs Penn's offense and has probably some of the best
throws in the ME. Great team leader and a challege for any defender to
shut down.
Lin (I hope thats the right name!... #00 with the hoop earrings) and
Emily (NYU): Both have great throws and especially killer breaks. Team
leaders and great confidence with the disc.
Amanda Davis (Rutgers): Although Rutgers didn't have their best
showing at Regionals, anyone who's every played Amanda knows she is
always a solid player with unstoppable backhand hucks.
Nichole "Smitty" Smith (Penn State): A shameless plug for my teammate,
but she deserves it! A leader on and off the field even as a
sophomore, Smitty is a play making handler with a stellar flick huck,
great quickness, and an ability to get open on almost anyone. She
attacks the disc in the air on offense and defense and plays well
above her height.

Carly "Mocon" Maconaghy (Penn State): Carly is one of the standout
players on our team this year, coming in as a freshman with 4 years of
HS as well as club experience. She immediately became one of the
dominant handlers on our team, with confident hucks and low release
breaks. Carly exhibits an amazing knowledge of the game which really
shows in her ability to shut people down on defense. She gets a ton of
handblocks, and not only can defend some of the top players in the
region, but as a freshman she consistently draws the other team's best
defenders (including several of the ladies mentioned for all-region
above!). An alternate this year for junior worlds, the ME can expect
to see great things from Carly in the next four years.

deserve some more:
lucy gillespie (pitt) - she puts her heart into the game, and she's a
huge threat on both o and d. when this girl is on the field, there's
no stopping her. she dominates the pitt offense and is far too humble
about it.
amanda virbitsky (pitt) - great throws and an incredible sense of the
game. trashes zones left and right, and really fun to watch play.
awesome breaks and a fantastic leader on the field.
raha mozaffari (penn) - dominates the field. helped lead penn to an
incredible regionals showing. perfect throws, insane defense (she'll
lay out through anything) and experience that shows. has always been
good, but came back from the club season looking absolutely insane.
amanda davis (rutgers) - ive never seen anyone push as hard as amanda
does. she's the heart and soul of shakti, and is one of the most
natural players ive ever seen. she has insane ups, perfect throws,
great d's and has incredible field sense. she's incredibly athletic
and leaves everything on the field. she's a huge threat on the field,
and is a great leader.

Not going to hype them up too much, because if you were at regionals
and played against us or watched us play, you should have already made
a note of these players.
From Ottawa:
- Alex "Benz" / "JRob" Benedict (#42) 5'7" Black haired handler who
has the full field hucks.
- Danielle "BabyD" Fortin (#22) 5'5" light brown hair handler with the
killer break throws.
- Kate Crump (#88) (nickname "KateCrump" or "C-Rump") 5'8" solid
cutter, a machine.
- Sonia "Komo" Komenda (#15) 5'6" blonde who never stops running.
- Shannon Becker (#3) 5'8" blonde receiver who gets her share of Ds
Obviously it can get hard to compare the superstars from the other ME
teams with the five players up there (especially if you've never seen
us play), but those girls are all gamers and should seriously
(emphasis on "seriously") be considered on your all-region team lists.
FOTY:
HANDS DOWN Kathryn "KPo" Pohran (#10). Sure, I have a bias... But it
would be RIDICULOUS if she didn't get FOTY. She would be on my all
region team, yet she's just a freshman. KPo is the 5'7" dirty blonde/
light brown haired cutter. Just solid. You can count on her to make
the layout grab any day, to sky her opponents deep, to make that
perfect in cut exactly when you need it. Great initiator, extremely
smart choice maker, and just solid all-around. Her experience shows on
the field (Canadian Juniors Women's Team '06, Bytowne Flatball Club
'07 - top Ottawa club mixed team). She is such an impact player on
Ottawa, it would be a crime for her not to get FOTY.

And Arker played really well for Northeastern. She should definitely

Freshman of the Year is easily between the two big contenders Kennedy
Wolfe (Wake) - she scored like 14 of the 17 goals Wake scored against
UNC in the final game and Janna Coulter (UNC) - one of the main
handlers of the team as a freshman, essential to the UNC offense.

Molly COHEN (Brown Disco) should get a shout out for all region for
sure. She's an amazing all around player (cutter, thrower, and D)
plus she's got spirit to boot. Loved playing her on Tandem and this
weekend at Regionals.

Though it may seem a little biased, the pittsburgh ladies on this list
are undoubtedly deserving, i wouldn't want to play against them for
fear of injuring my pride.
Pittsburgh- Jen Kacin (2) great player, stellar defense, best mark in
the metro east, by far. her throws are money, and she was an all
region-er last spring as well. Still just as good... probably even
better.
Pittsburgh- amanda "Virb" virbitsky(17 i think): most solid handler
you're going to find in college ultimate... end of story.
Pittsburgh -Molly Moore(22): Stellar deep receiver, fast , smart
defender, big throws... probably recognize her by seeing her sky just
about anyone on the field
Pittsburgh- Christie Lawry (1): exceptional handler, one of the best
marks out there, stellar deep defense
Penn- Raha Mozaffari: from what sectionals and regionals looked like,
this girl runs the field for her team, great long throws, smart
handling
Rutgers- amanda davis- d.e.f.e.n.s.e holy crap. great throws, stellar
mark, outstanding man defense, likewise her team's offense is centered
around her
NYU- Linh Hoang(00)- smart handler, solid throws, team's offense is
centered directly around her strengths

four girls that have gotten a lot of hype already on this thread, but
deserve some more:
lucy gillespie (pitt) - she puts her heart into the game, and she's a
huge threat on both o and d. when this girl is on the field, there's
no stopping her. she dominates the pitt offense and is far too humble
about it. (which is why im currently replying to her own post right
now)
amanda virbitsky (pitt) - great throws and an incredible sense of the
game. trashes zones left and right, and really fun to watch play.
awesome breaks and a fantastic leader on the field.
raha mozaffari (penn) - dominates the field. helped lead penn to an
incredible regionals showing. perfect throws, insane defense (she'll
lay out through anything) and experience that shows. has always been
good, but came back from the club season looking absolutely insane.
amanda davis (rutgers) - ive never seen anyone push as hard as amanda
does. she's the heart and soul of shakti, and is one of the most
natural players ive ever seen. she has insane ups, perfect throws,
great d's and has incredible field sense. and have you seen her
breaks? she's incredibly athletic
and leaves everything on the field. she's a huge threat on the field,
and is a great leader.
gotta send shout outs to a few others:
schmitty (sp?) on penn state - as a freshman, she was hucking to
seniors. as a sophomore, she's tearing up the field. tons of fun to
watch.
kate anthony - upenn - this sophomore made a fantastic transition to
handler. sick throws, tons of poise, and great defense. a season of
club has helped position her as a leader on venus - look out for her
to help penn maintain its strength next year.

Just wanted to mention a couple girls who I think are both deserving
of the Northwest FOTY title
-Lindsey Wilson # 2 (Washington)- Lindsey is one of UW’s top lane
cutters and one of the toughest players to defend on that team. She is
incredibly athletic and gets open with ease before launching perfect
lefty-hucks downfield. Lindsey is also a gritty player. She makes some
of the biggest offensive bids you’ll see in women’s ultimate.
-Robyn Fashler # 35 (UBC)- Robyn has been a great addition to our team
this year. She was unable to play any of the pre-series tournaments,
but made a huge difference for us in the series. At 6 feet tall, Robyn
has proven herself to be a great threat both offensively and
defensively. She is one of our go-to strikers and is fast and
impossible to stop in the air. She also gets a lot of blocks on the
mark and when playing in the top of our wall, makes it virtually
impossible to throw successfully over. Robyn will be representing
Canada on the Canadian Junior Women’s team at Worlds this summer.
It might be a bit late for those Northwest teams that have already
voted, but I thought it was worth giving these two gals some much
deserved recognition.

discussion regarding the Southwest has been rather quiet, I thought
that this might provoke some others to speak up.
I tend to view All-Region as a reward for the entire spring season
with greater emphasis on performance during the series. That said,
Andrea Romano would have been an easy vote for me had she been
healthy.
There are a slew of great candidates this year. I'll start with my
top seven (in no particular order).
1) Angie 'Taz' Sanan (UCLA) - She should easily finish in the top 10
for the Callahan and I would be very surprised if she doesn't finish
in the top 5.
2) Andi 'Gizmo' Coleman (UCLA) - She was already good to begin this
year. This season, she's taken it up a notch and is a dynamic player
on both sides of the disc. If there were a nationwide All-Defensive
team, she would get my vote on the first team.
3) Cheryl 'Kix' Prideaux (UCLA) - If she can stay healthy, she has the
potential to become of the top cutters in club ultimate. There are
other players who probably deserve more accolades for their play this
season, but Kix is easily one of the best athletes out there (on a
short list with players like Georgia Bosscher and Lindsey Cross). Kix
is kind of like Carlos Boozer - that player who was very good in
college but overshadowed a bit by bigger names (Brand, Battier). Like
Boozer, she'll become a standout for whoever is lucky enough to get
her (I'm guessing either Fury or Zeitgeist).
4) Katie Barry (UCSB) - No-brainer.
5) Julia Tenen (Arizona) - I'm still in the process of writing an
article on her. I've mentioned several times that Arizona doesn't get
the attention they deserve. If Julia played for UCLA, UCSB or any
other top team, she would be shoo in. She absolutely deserves a
spot.
6) Julie Fast (Colorado) - Jfast is another person that I would
consider for the All-Defensive team. It was very close between her
and Amy Smith.
7) Anne 'Bambi' Ohliger (USC) - I'm generally against promoting
players from one's own squad and debated whether I should include USC
players in the discussion. Since this is simply my opinion on who is
deserving and this is my best attempt to be objective about the
performance of players this past season, I figured what the hell.
Because they are so many deserving candidates, I've added a 2nd and
3rd All-Region team.

Kaela Jorgensen (UCSB) - Along with Amy Smith, very close to being on

be on the 2nd team.

Carolyn Finney (UCSB) - She could easily be on the 2nd team as well.

Freshman of the Year
I don't think this is close. Brenna Hokanson (Colorado) should win
easily. I think there are other freshmen who will become big time
players and potentially better, but none have had as big an impact as
Brenna has.
Other freshmen who are worth watching include:
Adrienne Baker, Katie Falk (UCLA) - Yikes they are good. I don't know
where they find these tall, athletic receivers. I'm suspecting it's a
result of the joint project between BLU and UCLA's genetic engineering
program. This summer, I'm going across town to figure out how to
divert these athletes to USC.
Bri Cahn (UCSB) - She's a very speedy and athletic player. She's
played a big role for the Burning Skirts.
Noelle Oh (USC) - Her nickname is Jesus. There's always room for
Jesus.

The Parallels
1) Korb is short for Korbzyzewski. K is short for Korb. You might as
well call him Coach K2. I still prefer Korbles or Dr. Korbopolous.
2) Both started their coaching tenures as young men and became quickly
successful.
3) A possible link between Duke and UCLA... UCLA's basketball team was
recently likened to Duke in terms of the most reviled program outside

4) Duke had the Killer B's (Brand, Battier, Boozer, Bagwell, Biggio,

should be immediately renamed to Akira like the cult anime).
