Interesting idea on the Bama Section blog today:

http://bamasecs.wordpress.com/2010/02/03/sec-championships/

Are these athletic conference tie-in tournaments really worth it, at
the risk of alienating all of the smaller teams in the sections?
Regardless I think it is a pretty novel idea, especially given some of
the built-in rivalries.

Why bound Ultimate by traditional football/basketball
rivalries? The larger leagues such as the Big Ten and SEC
are realistically unworkable as Ultimate leagues. Penn
State should play Pittsburgh, Bucknell and Princeton.
Georgia should play Georgia Tech ...

Nobody is saying redraw the regions dude. Just having one
tournament a year that has an interesting spin to it.

Actually it's a shorter drive for, say Florida to drive to
Auburn rather than North Carolina. Or for Auburn, Alabama,
Arkansas to drive to Auburn rather than Texas. So your
argument goes begging...

Does Kentucky even have a team?

If you play your cards right it could be worth it. It would be really
important to play it up to all the school newspapers, some of the
local papers, and especially the administration. However, you still
can't neglect the Ozark, Bama, Florida and Georgia/South Carolina
Sections. In someways its not any different than the old Div 1
lacrosse conferences that fought different schools in their conference
but still played up the normal conference rivalries.

I have a little trouble with the schools not supporting the teams on
that level, and I also like that the clubs ride outside the varsity
machine that schools provide. The Hodags are not Badgers, Mamabird is
not the Buffalos, You don't spell Georgia Joja (sp?) and the Zontals
are not the Jayhawks. We can use rivalries all we want, but we are our
own machine and revel in our unique talent pools. Great topic.

YES GOD DAMN IT!!!!!! why you people always so worried abvout hurting
somones feelings at the expense of the sport becoming more legit. I
remember when i was trying to put MLU together one of the GM's was all
worried about those teammates of his that wouldnt make the cut (or the
4 all star teams that were created). Cause when ya take a good look
at the sport its ALREADY overly exclusive competition wise AND
popularity wise. So just do yourselves a favor and pretend like
ultimate is a REAL SPORT.......and start treating it as such

ITS A FUCKIN NO-BRAINER IDEA. in fact, you guys would be smart to try
and start thinking about gettin nacc status........or at least look
into what it would ultimately take to make that transition. But dont
think for a SECOND that this is anything the upa will assist you
with........which is kinda fucked up isnt it. on mean on the one hand
theyde probably face a big financial sacrifice......but on the other
hand it would be GREAT for the sport. As someone that wants to see
the sport advance, that is a sacrifice i'de be more than willing to
make.......but i doubt them upa idiots would.

why just have one though????? why not set it up so that EVERY
CONFERENCE is represented.......THEN have a national tourny at the end
with all the winners. and do it under the management of the
uoa......and do it in the fall......or even early spring.

ya mean as a varsity sport?........well, only one way to find out
right? and that support would be much greater if college ultimate
approached the ncaa as a WHOLE. The sad part is that the upa would
likely offer little to no assistance in facilitating said
representation.......sport horders, imo!

why? do you REALLY think that all the athleats that arte on varsity
teams wish they could go bac to having club level representation?
just think, the school paying for trips to play single game events in
front of their respective student bodies......as the present tourny
format is just too overwhelming and caotic to attract and maintain any

i would personally prefer school teams to represent their mascot names
WITHOUT ncaa affiliation.......GO GATORS......in football and
ultimate. and who knows, the athletes that play ultimate might get
more repect from the other fellow studen athleats if the wouldnt
always try to be different, cute or mock the institution of "college

Can't do all that as a varsity NCAA team, with all the rules and
stuff.

Some of the bigger schools (florida, colorado, wisconsin, etc.) may
want REAL legit status, but I'd think 94.69% of the college ultimate
community likes it the way it is.

If you want to legitimize Ultimate, do it at the club level so we can
still have our potential 5 years of awesome times over a 6 year span.

i agree with everthing you said except the legit part. formalizing
informality is in no way shape or form somthing that can be considered
legit.......and dont most of the competitive teams refrain from
partying for the sake of being more competitive anyways? also, i dont
see too amny college atheleats bailing on their ncaa teams to take up
ultimate........so by deductive reasoning playing in that "official"
capacity MUST be more appealing. I mean seriously, do you think if a
guy that played ulti and another sport in hs but got a scholorship AND
all the other perks that go with that afiliation he would choose to
play ulti because "its an effing blast". Me thinks that as an
inferior athlete playing an inferior sport that you just cant relate.

One more point.....dont think for a second that college ahtleats dont
party. maybe they dont party with each other but is that really such
a big deal to the top tier teams????

why not do both? but, fyi, most sports break thru at the college

One thing to note, currently, some club sports cannot use the school
mascot name or even the school colors. So this is not always an
option. This is the case at Wisconsin, I believe to some limited
extent at Michigan State, and I presume at many other universities -
especially the major ones with massive licensing agreements. This
might be one of the first things to try and adjust.

I think the idea of conference tournaments is great, I just don't want
them to become too big. I come from a small division 2 school which
would never get to compete against those BCS conference schools, so I
know I wouldn't get to be apart of those tournaments. As long as its
only left as a single tournament, it doesn't matter to me. I think
it'd be fun to follow the results and see which big schools excel and
fail in our sport. I want my shot at the big timers, and ultimate is a
great way for school's like mine to have a chance to compete at the
highest level with them.

isnt that like saying you dont want to ultimate itself to get too
big......of which, what in the fuck is "too big". is soccer too big?
football must obviously be too big. and no matter how big it gets
wont there always be enough ultimate to go around?
-----------------------------------------------------------

I come from a small division 2 school which

so I
> know I wouldn't get to be apart of those tournaments.

then transfer if its that big of a deal......if not, just compete
within your own division. I'm sure there will always be a series in
which you can try your hand against the big boys.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

As long as its
> only left as a single tournament, it doesn't matter to me.

what if it was a bunch of single tournies followed by one singly
nationals tourny......and it was in the fall or early spring. how is
it that THAT would matter to you? because you are being excluded?
problem easily solved......just form d2 tournies. cant you see that
this would be another step towards making the sport more legit? dont
you want to see the sport be more legit. or is your angle that the
sport should sacrifice itself for little ole you?
-------------------------------------------------------------

I think
> it'd be fun to follow the results and see which big schools excel and

then dont hate it...........appreciate it!!!! although i dont know
who watches sports to see teams fail

dont fret, theres plenty of tournies to go around........but ya also
got to look at it this way........those "big timeres" you speak of
might not have ANY intrest in competeing against sub par d2
comp........so why should they make that sacrifce for your sake. they
may think that crushing you guys with all their second stringers is a
complete waste of time. ever thought of that.

Agreed. Look at the Stanford Invite/Open debate, if you don't invite
certain teams to your tournament they might be annoyed, but if it
seems worth it, go for it. If you work it right, you can probably get
some good attention/publicity from the school or local press. There
are non-athletic competitions that use athletic conference as a way to
choose participants (http://fisher.osu.edu/programs/graduate/events-

for marketing an event.

(American Heritage) Gimmick: An innovative stratagem or scheme
employed especially to promote a project

Playing ultimate is not an innovative scheme to promote an SEC event.
Inviting only SEC teams to a tournament and marketing it as comparable
to an NCAA event would be an innovative scheme to promote an ultimate
tournament. Of course, the real trick would be marketing or promoting
it at all, which is low on the priority list for most TDs.

are you people gonna realize that "less is more". take a tip from the
