It's a real shame not more has been written about this tournament.
Like the TX Shootout what we have here is a small, elite tournament
with a format that gives everyone some good games. The fields are
sweet, the neighbors aren't, and the games will be sick. But who came
up with these seeds?

1. DoG
2. Bravo
3. Doublewide
4. Kaos
5. Sub Zero
6. Machine
7. Rhino
8. Sack Lunch

However, any dumbass knows that seeds are irrelevant at this tourney.
Everyone plays everyone else, top two play finals.

DoG - 'sup with them? Not much. No wait a sec -- a lot. Who's
bringing the stone tablets and parting the seas with no Moses? Who's
making sure everyone's dicks are in their pants with Zip still in
Europe? And who's playing offense with no Moses, no Zip? Good thing
they are warming up against Machine first thing Saturday. Wouldn't
surprise me to see Sack beat them in the second round, what with the
altitude and all, but DoG's not in for an easy weekend.

Bravo - Some new blood is making this team a freakin threat this
year. Have you heard of Beau Kittredge? Me neither, but I think he's
a pretty good off-season pick-up. The Bong, fresh of a few BAT seasons,
is a nice addition as well. Except they sucked at Solstice. Hopefully
they will remove their heads from their asses earlier in the weekend
this time. Like maybe even in the first round, when they face fellow
Coloradoans (or is it Coloradans?) Sack Lunch, who beat Bravo at this
very show last year.

Doublewide - Not the team they were last year. Only mustered two Ws
at their own tourney. Lost in quarters at Boston. They might make it to
Sarasota, but they too will have a tough time in Denver. They'll lose
their first two games (Kaos, Rhino) and muster wins over a couple
teams, but they will not threaten the big boys.

Kaos - Is change afoot in the Bay Area? Seems unlikely. Picking up
Seidler is good, Jam losing Damien & Idris is good, but the Santa
Cruzers will not be tops in NorCal this year. They will put their best
feet forward this weekend and try their damnedest. I think some quality
wins and some close losses will mean they had a good weekend. Will
definitely beat: Machine, Doublewide. Will definitely lose to: Bravo,
Rhino. Could beat: Sub Zero, DoG.

Sub Zero - If you have been hiding under a rock for the last few
months, let me tell you about this team: they have benefited from
Madison's folding/implosion. They will not be ready to lose to Rhino,
but they will. And they'll be looking for vengeance against DoG
(Easterns finals: 17-16 DoG), which they will get. Also -- Dan
Heijman? Completely nasty with one arm. Am not sure what to expect with
two. Hopefully Beau doesn't embarrass Dan Miller as badly as he did
at college nationals.

Machine - I don't even think keeping Chuck on the roster could
prevent a winless weekend. I could see them beating Doublewide, esp.
since that round comes right after DW tries to beat Sub Zero, but I
wouldn't bank on it. Are the Titcombs flying this time?

Rhino - Yeah, 7-seed is a wee bit low. Link and Richards are well
nasty, innit. Their third-round match-up against Bravo is a preview of
the finals. Reacclimating will be tough, but a second night's sleep
means the playing field will be a little more level on Sunday.

Sack Lunch - Will hoodies and discs be available for purchase? Is
Dar's percoset prescription running out yet? The 8-seed is merely a
technicality. This team will bubble up a bit, probably to the 6-spot,
maybe the 5. Following a loss to Bravo (and a possible but unlikely W
against DoG) their Saturday can only improve. They'll beat Machine
and almost certainly DW. I would pay money to hear Dar's color
commentary during the Rare/Schwa showcase game. I don't think they
will win any games on Sunday.

Final standings:
1/2 - Rhino/Bravo. Haven't decided who's going to win yet. I
suspect Bravo, but I've been wrong before.
3 - Sub Zero
4 - DoG
5 - Kaos
6 - Sack Lunch
7 - Doublewide
8 - Machine

2511 Rhino
2501 Kaos

Where are said three players? I didn't see Moses at Easterns but
that's permanent? And is it injury or sweet other team that picks up

Moses has shown up on the new Sockeye roster with an unexplained asterisk.
Don't what's up with that, but while you're there you can check one of my
best ever action shots headlining Sockeye's news page.

Damien: moved to England, Idris: enjoying some free time (recently rumoured
to have been seen purchasing 5 cardboard cutouts and a monkey).

Who is Rhino? You're crazy to think dog and dw are weak enough this
year to lose to the likes of rhino and kaos. ONce again why so much
love for rhino?

Yes DW is a different team this year, they are stronger. Skippy is playing
with Sockeye and Scotty B is on hiatus but they have added a lot of quality
in their place. You also have their college players Max, Trick, Charlie,
Tank, and Salad with even more experience ready to step up even more. Add in
a new crop of TUFF players and I think DW will give the teams all they can
handle.

Baton Rouge was the first tournament this year that DW has come close to
fielding a full team. I don't think Hex knows DW as well as he thinks.

DoG/SubZero was epic at easterns, the win was universe point, with Dog
scoring three times, two of which were discounted via calls. I can't
imagine that this won't be another great game.

none of that portafield crap)...

let's be clear about one thing: those strippers, Mia and Annika, STOLE
my pain killers and were not given them, at the bachelor party last
weekend. but the tradeoff was nothing less than classy so i'm gonna
forget the act of thievery -- this time. if you want the story, look
no further than the sideline, where i'll be keepin' stats all weekend.

despite what i think have been some decent practices, i can't hit the
ground yet and therefore, got myself benched by the captains. little
do they know, i'm gonna bench them for my wedding in two weeks.

and all the hoodies and discs have been sold...reaped the benefits via

get Mia and Annika some playing time in that showcase game and you'll
get more than commentary....

Byron,
You know how DW is my second family and I have nothing but love.
This is why DW's underwhelming performances are troubling. The team
seems to be stacked with ballers, so why aren't they winning more
often?
Playing them twice at the Texas Shootout it seemed many of the
veterans, who should be most experienced running DW's plays, were
playing different brands of disc. There's no system and no buying in
and it leads to disjucted play. I'd love for my friends to start
playing like a team more often, but until DW does that they'll continue
to struggle against equal or better opponents.

I agree that inconsistency has been their bane especially on offense. I
don't know that they have shown their true colors this year.

They probably should have had a better showing at the Shootout. They were
missing the UT guys but still had enough there to do the job, especially
since Bravo and Chain brought small squads. The Boston results don't mean
much since they didn't take a lot of their players and they were playing
guys that were trying to make their team.

Hopefully their win at Baton Rouge will carry on and they can do well this
weekend.

Good luck this weekend Hector and your sorry ass better make it back to
Centex next year.

The teams themselves, by virtue of their order of finish at the 2004
club championships (with the two non-qualifiers given the low seeds).

As you said, it doesn't matter.

The real question is probably who will win out of Godiva, Rare Air, and
Schwa. The exhibition game on Saturday between Rare Air and Schwa
could be a preview to the finals if one of the teams can beat Godiva in
semis...

1. Godiva
The team lost players from last season and probably won't be quite as
strong as they have been previously. They took every person who tried
out this year and Johanna is moving to D.C. (I haven't hear if she'll
still play with Godiva this Series). Nonetheless, the team won the
Boston Invitational, beating Zanzara 13-1, and is still probably
favored to win this tournament.

2. Rare Air
The team beat Schwa 15-14 in the quarters of Solstice, so the
exhibition match-up should be exciting. This team will have the
endurance advantage in the high altitude and probably has the best shot
at upsetting Godiva.

3. Schwa
Schwa has a history of being a streaky team; when Tracy's "on" and the
rest of the team is following suit, they can beat anyone--so watch out.
The addition of some talented U of O women on the roster adds more
youth and speed.

4. Skyline
Skyline will have to fight to make the fourth spot in semis, especially
since they played HomeBrood to a one point game at Cal States (winning
9-8) and will re-match their Bay Area rival in pool play. The team
beat Box Lunch at Solstice 6-3 in a lightning capped game.

5. Home Brood
The team will have to beat Skyline in pool play to avoid seeing Rare or
Schwa in quarters, and the game will probably be too close to call at
this point. The team should be able to hold off the other teams in its
pool (MOJO and Box Lunch).

6. Zanzara
The team almost made quarters last year at Nationals against Rare Air,
but did not seem as strong this season at the Boston Invite where it
lost 13-1 to Godiva. How well they do could depend on how complete
their roster is (is Becky still playing with them?). I would bet on a
Safari pool play upset.

7. Safari
This team hasn't played any games all summer yet, so it's hard to say
exactly how they'll match up. If the team can translate its Goaltimate
skills effectively, it should be able to beat Zanzara and make a run at
semis in its quarters match-up against Skyline or Homebrood.

8. MOJO
I don't really know anything about this team, and I bet that Skyline
and HomeBrood don't either. That could be to MOJO's advantage as it
tries to knock one of the Bay Area teams down a seed in pool play. The
team beat Bait 13-7 at No Surf this year.

9. Box Lunch
Another local team that will benefit from its high altitude training.
I don't know if that will be enough of an edge to cause any major
upsets, though.

10. Bait
This team went 5-1 at No Surf (only losing to MOJO), and should give
Zanzara and Safari games in pool play.

Here's a charitable way to do it. T. Hex was right about the ordering
of Bravo, Subzero, Kaos, and Sack Lunch. He was very wrong about where
DoG, DW, Machine, and Rhino would slot in. So we'll give him a 50%.

Here's an even more charitable way to do it:
Assume that Hex's proposed final standings mean that each team beat
everyone that finished below them, and lost to everyone that finished
above them.

Give Hex credit for every game that went according to that matrix, and
dock him for every game that goes against it...so, he gets a -1 for
SubZero losing to DoG and also for SubZero beating Rhino. He gets a +1 for
SubZero beating Doublewide and a +1 for SubZero losing the Bravo.

He finished +10 by my count...33 correct and 23 wrong.

This is kinda besides the point though...If ESPN prognosticators were
fired for being wrong then there wouldn't be any. Let's not insult people
that are willing to distract us from just cause they were wrong..

Meaning that he did not do statistically better than he would have using a
random coin flip for each game (p < 0.30).
But he didn't do worse, either. And he would have beaten the house (which
would have gotten 14.4 correct).

But what's the baseline? The seeds predicted 23/28, missing only
DoG-Bravo, DoG-Kaos, Kaos-SZ, DW-SZ, and Kaos-Machine. It was a
well-ordered tournament, with only the DoG-Kaos game being
nontransitive.

We could look at the games that T. Hex predicted an "upset" (according
to the seed) and see how he did.
Correct: Bravo over DoG, SZ over DW, SZ over Kaos
Incorrect: Rhino over DoG, Rhino over SZ, Rhino over Kaos, Rhino over
Machine, SZ over DoG, Kaos over DW, Sack Lunch over Machine, SL over
Rhino

So, he was only 3/11 when he deviated from "go with the higher seed".

You forgot Rhino over DW, so 3/12.

T. Hex appeared to be working from the the RRI rankings as oppose to
the seeds. The RRI only correctly predicted 15/28; pretty pathetic.
T. Hex only picked four upsets according to RRI, and was right about
three of them.

Charitable calculations or not, you can't really say my predictions
were great. Though I hope they would've been more accurate with a full
Rhino roster [http://tinyurl.com/djtlx]. I suspect you'll see strong
results from Rhino in their upcoming NW tournaments. They will be
battling it out for a spot in Sarasota ... though they certainly have a
tough road.

I congratulate DoG on playing well. I congratulate Machine for making a
mockery of my prediction that they would 0-fer. And I feel bad for the
Sack dudes. They should and will fare better in Chicago.

But anyway, what got me going in the first place was not seeing much
hype on the tournament. I wish there was more, for every tournament.
