In the finals, Bella went down 1-5 to Carleton right away. They took a
breath, refocused and brought it back to 5-5. From that point,
Carleton continued to score with Bella trailing. At 9-12, the wind
really picked up but Bella went on a run and tied the game at 12s.
Carleton was up by one (12-13) when the soft cap went on. At this
point, some of the seven on had played over 20 points. In the wind,
turns were absolutely devastating so Bella's experienced handlers
stayed in - the adrenaline had kicked in by this point anyway. With
the score at 13s, Georgia Bosscher found Laura Bitterman in the
endzone. A Carleton defender (maybe Molteni?) was making a huge bid
for the low-flying disc alongside Laura, and it wasn't clear right
away whether or not Bitterman had caught it. The sidelines erupted as
she sat up and raised the disc showing that Bella had taken the lead
for the first time all game, 14-13. The next point felt unbelievably
long. Even though Bella only had 2 unforced errors in the point, each
one was heart-wrenching. Wisconsin men are notorious for having hard-
working, intense defense; the women are no different. Carleton
struggled to maintain possession against the seemingly still-fresh
legs of Bella D. After a few passes, miscommunication led to a turn,
giving the disc back to Bella for a third attempt. After some
brilliant handler movement and a string of continuation cuts, Lucille
Strawn put the disc in the endzone to Georgia who had to layout in
traffic to catch it. 15-13 Wisconsin.

A full write-up of the Bella Donna experience during the series (and a
few videos from the season) can be found at http://www.mufa.org/teams/belladonna/

During the last 20 points of the game, Bella only had 12 unforced
errors. Emelie McKain has to be FOTY for the Central Region. She
played 24 points in the finals (the last 14 straight), had only 2
turns, and three huge Ds. Despite the fact that she only chalked up
one assist, she was constantly moving the disc to get it in position
for the score.

Laura Bitterman should be in the running for All-Region. In the
finals, she caught 7 goals and had two Ds, ending +17 for the
weekend.... probably my fantasy pick at nationals.

And just to tout my sister a little more: in the finals, Georgia
Bosscher had 7 assists, 2 goals, and 2 Ds with only 5 unforced turns
in 22 points. Ridiculous.

Carleton's offense seemed to move through Beth Mynar, and Taylor Ross
was a big target down field, although the whole team looked good with
the disc. I wish I could have watched the Syzygy/Eau-Claire game, but
I was called away to other things....

Amazing wind on Saturday. Amazing fields (despite the water). Amazing
weekend in Decorah.

I thought that I'd add in a follow up about the back-door game-to-go
between UW-Eau Claire and Carleton.

Carleton came out strong in the first half, making lots of big plays.
Syzygy's handlers swung the disc well, breaking through UWEC's zone to
get some quick short throws up field. They had incredible flow, and
demonstrated some good patience. It was a completely different game
from the UWEC/Carleton semi-final game on Saturday. Syzygy did not try
to win at the deep game, but rather on the short-to-mid game, making
some quick continues. On the other side of the disc, Syzygy's zone
looked great, causing some key turns in their favor. If I'm not
mistaken, the score at half was 8-3, Carleton.

The second half, was won by UWEC. Momentum changed pretty quickly
after half to favor Eau Claire. The ladies of SOL made some good
adjustments at half, switching around some players, also switching to
man defense, rather than zone. UWEC's handlers made some huge plays.
UWEC's continuation throws on offense were quite solid. However, the
second half run wasn't enough to put UWEC above Carleton.

Final score 15-11, Syzygy over SOL.

I wish I could have gotten the chance to watch it...well, in addition
to playing in it, of course. From what I was told, it was quite
exciting in the second half.

To echo Anne's comments about the weekend, though the fields were a
little wet, they were pretty good. The wind was not nearly as bad as
it was last year (I remember how terrified I was of the horizontal
rain we had in the game before the game-to-go...)

Best of luck to the Bellas and Syzygy in Boulder, represent for the
Central Region. As for UW-Eau Claire, perhaps look for us to make an
appearance at D-III nationals? (We hope so at least)

It's always an amazing weekend in Decorah when Roscoes is involved
Bosscher...

Anyway thanks for the love regarding the fields despite the awful
weather that accompanied them. Congrats to both teams.
