(Jackie Chan is back and I want to know!)

I'm saying that the Mens final four will be (no particular order):

Martin
Ferbey
Adams
Howard
(with Johnny Mo' and Jeff Stoughton nipping at their heels).

I will go further and say that: Adams will play one of the Alberta
teams in the final and come up just a wee bit short.

If Richard Hart is sidelined early and Wayne M. steps in at third then
I think that Howard then is a finalist.

On the distaff side (no particular order again):

C. Jones
J. Jones
With the three Sask teams fighting it out for the final two spots.

I'd like to say Jan Betker (sentimental favourite for ol' Jackie here)
but I think she will end up odd gal out.

In the final I think that C. Jones will prevail.

Well gang? Whaddaya think ...

CurlingZone has a couple of polls going for the trials:

Looks pretty close so far. I think I voted Kleibrink and Ferbey (but would
prefer Martin to win).

Should be a good week, no matter who wins.

Be aware that this will not be a page-playoff system, nor will it be a
Worlds-style 1-plays-4, 2-plays-3 semi.

Only the top 3 advance to the playoffs. Round-robin winner goes straight to
final. 2 and 3 play off to decide who meets him.

Since Russ Howard is going to be skipping (calling the game/shots) Brad
Gushue's team (and throwing 2nd), I'm changing my vote from Ferbie to
Howard.

That's arguably a modified "page" system .... sans team #4 - I like it ;>)

Actually I believe this is the system Canada used in the Brier / Hearts way
back when. It had enough complaints about it so that it evolved INTO the
page system. (Such as: team 1 was cold after the long layoff, team 3
shouldn't get the same chances as team 2, etc.... all of which were
addressed by the page)

The accuracy of your vho is yet to be determined. Lots of the "old"
favourites didn't play either well or poorly. Just well enough to be in the
middle of the pack, and not well enough to make the top three. I'd still
not bet against Martin or Ferbeyn on a given weekend (although Nedohin was
horrid, at times)

Until these guys show on more than one weekend that they're not still among
the best around, they are. I'd still bet that Ferbey or Martin represents
Ab. at the Brier, for example. Howard the Younger is one of the best in
Ontario, but Middaugh's outplaying him to this date, but kept missing out on
Oly. playoff berths. It's possible that we in Canada left none of the best
chances for Olympic Gold sitting in the stable, to use a racing metaphor.

I don't think it's the end of an era, except for maybe/probably Ferbey's.
Like him or hate him, he had only the Olympics yet to do, and now that's not
gonna happen. I do think that there's a transition, and that the Morris and
Gushue-aged players are going to get stronger teams and take over from the
"over-40"s". I can remember my Dad saying that nobody would ever be better
than the Richardson's, and then thinking later in life, that there's nobody
better than Hackner, and then amending that to Werenich, Folk, Howard,
Middaugh, etc.

These guys *are* that good, or have been. And that's a helluva lot better
than most of us will ever be. Those who came up short should still be
congratulated, imvho.
