NZ side - 11 brave players and 2 dauntless umpires from a tiny island
- stopped the mighty West Indies dead in their tracks. Shades of the
300 Spartans that stopped the Persian empire. West Indies could bowl
their hearts out and appeal till they were blue in the face. But the
umpires resolutely held their own. Not a single LBW, no caught behind
the wicket and even some first slip catches were denied. Them were the
days.
And when Lloyd complained? Australia and England sternly used their
veto of course. Nothing could be done to the umpires who had fought so
well. The conscience of the west was intact. Croft and Holding ended
up having to apologize and Viv Richards was booed every time he
stepped on to the green. And NZ stood firm against the finest bowling
the world had seen assembled in one team. And the NZ umpires stood
firmer. Stood firmer and stood in all three tests. And stood between
the West Indies and a series win. The Kiwi answer to Horatius.
Unless the Asian bloc is stopped and stopped soon, we will never see
men like this again. Rudi Koertzen, Taufel and Howell can do their
best - and they have done their best - but without help from England
and Australian veto it will have been in vain. Time to take Cricket
back. Back from the Asian hordes.

in the process of setting up the Northern Tier Transmission Group, which
is designed to facilitate coordination of big power lines in the area.
The group is likely to announce plans for transmission line projects in
the next half year, said Robert Kahn, spokesman for the NTTG.
The NTTG will not be an independent entity, so it will not serve as a
regional transmission organization.
The five utilities are PacifiCorp., Idaho Power, Northwestern Energy,
Deseret Power Electric Cooperative, and the Utah Associated Municipal
Power Systems.
NTTG co-chair and Idaho Public Utilities Commissioner Marsha Smith said
"Much can be done quickly. For one, we will offer transmission customers
a new level of insight into the workings of the transmission system
enhancing its value to all consumers."
The NTTG will strive to improve available transmission capacity and
expedite planning for grid expansion and collaborating on control area
operations.
A plan to share control area operations has been developed by several
NTTG members along with federal and state agencies including the Federal
Energy Regulatory Commission.
"Enhanced data sharing between our respective control areas will enable
us to better share existing resources and more easily integrate new
resources such as wind power," said John Cupparo, NTTG co-chair and vice
president for transmission at PacifiCorp.
PacifiCorp. is a unit of Mid American Energy, which is a subsidiary of

There was a function got together to felicitate a soon-to-be retiree
where a gent said "This organisation without Mr. So-and-so would be

see how many "were out" and how many given to begin with. As an
example I would expect Wasim and Waqar to end up with more LBWs and

In hindsight, Sir Vivian Isaac may very well be embarrassed by the way
he appealed that day as well. He knew that the way to play (and
appeal) is aggressively, and shouldn't be remembered just for going
over-the-top in one particular instance. The guy's an absolute

Just stumbled across a video of the incident you're talking about.
Some people have a very strange idea of what constitutes cheating, and
the fact that an umpire's job is to make decisions with a clear mind -
you wouldn't take on the job if you knew you could be influenced by
aggressive appealers. They are just a part of the game, though Viv was
obviously way over the top here - he was playing with passion, and
most cricket-lovers would appreciate him for that.

It does not show him until the umpire gives the out decision. He seems
to be doing something with his had but does not seem to be running
down the pitch.
