I would say that surprisingly, the spin duo of Harby and Kumble
were the only successful bowlers in the series, along with Khan to
some extent. Bangar supported well.
Here is how the series numbers look so far,
Harbhajan Singh 12 wkts @34.16
A Kumble 14 wkts @36.00
Z Khan 11 wkts @43.90
AB Agarkar 8 wkts @61.00
A Nehra 5 wkts @63.80
SB Bangar 4 wkts @29.25
Both Nehra and Agarkar are *not* 60+ average bowlers. Agreed they
had a poor series but this is not the end of the world. Nehra
is 189 wkts @25.64 and Agarkar, 115 wkts @27.76. Currently,
only Mohanty matches a better profile and we have known
that he is not miles better than either Nehra or Agarkar. In
addition, Agarkar batted well in the series, and average of 42.
He saved India from probably a collapse. I think the whole
series was well played and the Indian batting was sensational,
R Dravid @100
SR Tendulkar @66
SC Ganguly @58
SB Bangar @44
AB Agarkar @42
VVS Laxman @39
V Sehwag @39
PA Patel @26
Harbhajan @22
Z Khan @22
So most of this summer in England it simply proves that the
wickets were full of runs and neither England nor India made
a serious impact on the game.
I would say this, if this series is a draw, holding Nehra
or Agarkar responsible for the bad bowling is unfair. Both teams
capitalized on the pitches which were full of runs.

Great post dude.
If anything, this series should put an end to "prasad got a free ride
kinda posts". Also we should now be spared of "aggy is a rhythm bowler"
crap or "he should be given continuos 3/4 tests to prove himself".
Like dot-com hype, agarkar hype has only proved one thing: Shit, even
when covered with cheese is still shit. Sadiq has taken entire rsc
for a ride. I know many rsc'ers think highly of Agarkar bcos Sadiq
writes reams of poetry.

Would you stop clubbing Nehra with Agarkar. Nehra had a bad series alright.
But he doesn't deserve to be clubbed along with the most useless bowler the
world a.k.a Agarkar. At the least Nehra has provided some moments which we
can feel happy about. Agarkar has been a tragedy big time.
> is 189 wkts @25.64 and Agarkar, 115 wkts @27.76. Currently,
And you have no problems claiming Agarkar's Test stats are invalid. It is
not his stats which are invalid. It is his bowling itself which is invalid.
It just doesn't cut much at this level. Period.

Mohanty has not got a free ride like Agarkar. Just stop passing your
judgements on him. Let him be tried on some conditions sometime. Agarkar
doesn't deserve to watch a Test match on a black and white TV.
Please don't give me the crap that Agarkar had a bad series. The problem is
you have got your lips firmly glued on to his but and even go to the extent
to suggest that Ganguly doesn't like him. Now that, the excuse is no more
valid as this happens to be the second time Gangs has played him 4
consecutive test, you are suggesting Agarkar had a bad series etc. Instead
of suggesting that Agarkar's captain is sabotaging his career would you
would be better of accepting that your man lacks class to play at this
level. Put yourselves on Ganguly's shoes. Here is a bowler who has averaged
55+ eversince Gangs took over(contrary to your claim that Agarkar is not a
60+ bowler) and whenever Gangs drops him he accused of being partisan. Not
to forget Agarkar's claims like "I lost too much weight, the plane flew too
close to sun causing sun stroke, peeing dehydrated me etc etc. so don't
consider me for selections".

Hey, I understand your frustration :-) India gave up 500+ runs
and so did England. The Test series could be drawn 1-1. Did we lose
0-4 like we were suppose to? Srinath's retirement was his
decision which was untimely and he panicked thinking that he
was going to get dropped. I would like to see Agarkar given
a little more chances, about 3-4 series outside India and
hope he can learn and improve over the next 2-3 years as a
Test bowler.
Besides, his domestic and ODI averages are quite solid and
after averaging 27.76 and 28 in ODIs, his average of 46 in
Tests is misleading. I don't think Madanlal is a better
bowler than Agarkar in Tests inspite of his 40+ average
in Test matches as a bowler. The best way to judge
Agarkar is time, and over a period of time, he should be
a solid Test bowler.
Regards
Nikhil
The competition level in domestics or Hostel
level is not around and ODI bowling is relatively
easier than Test bowling. I agree :-) The comparison
is relative in nature with other bowlers how have
bowled in the domestics like Agarkar. There is nothing
to suggest that Agarkar is bad in a relative sense
in the ODIs and FC cricket.
I am not defending Agarkar, I am defending the good
performances he and Nehra had in the domestics and
FC cricket to be kept around. Agreed that he did not
play well in this series, inspite of excellent conditions
Nehra failed to bowled the correct length needed to
take wickets. This takes experience and know-how and
there is no other bowler who can replace Agarkar with
his ODI bowling record and his batting. We do not have
a Waqar Younis is our midst, and, if we do it will be
obvious to everyone. So let us stick with the same
bowling attack.
If Agarkar can find his rythm, we will have an excellent
pair of Khan-Agarkar for the next 5-6 years for both ODI
and Tests without having to make to many changes. The result
will be they can be in good physical condition since they
are already playing ODI cricket all the time during the
year and playing Tests after long time with no international
cricket from a long wait can affect your performance.
There is an advantage of having the same ODI and Test pair
both of whom bowl around 136-140 kph, and improve over a
period of time with maturity and proper line and length.
I am not objecting to either the Kumble-Harbhajan spin duo
which is a good duo, not as great as maybe bowlers like
Warne and Murali. But they are the best around, and all
4 bowlers Khan-Agarkar + Kumble-Harbhajan can be supported
well by Sanjay Bangar. This is a good strategy and is working
because we have not lost this Test series if not won it.
Regards
Nikhil
If he is so good in domestics he must play more of that and spare the Test
team. There can't be more frustrating sight than seeing Agarkar play for
India unless of course he improves a great deal.

Again. No clubbing of Nehra and Agarkar please. Nehra had a bad series.
Agarkar sucked, sucks and will always suck. He didn't bowl well in Zimbabwe,
South Africa & in India, chickened out from NZ tour and SL tour. Only time I
will choose Agarkar is when the matches are played between Dec 15 and Dec 31
at the end of a millennium.

If at the end of 4 years he learnt to sucks so much, wonder how much he will
suck after 8 years.

Nonsense. We don't have Waqar. But that doesn't mean we stick with crap. Mr
Agarkar has to go. Period. Even Prasad at this age is 1000 times better.
Take it from me. Agarkar can never ever get 7 5-vers of average 35 or below
as a bowler. If he bowls a few more tests he will touch 50. As a homework
plot a graph of his cummulative average over the 15 tests he has played.
Nothing on earth can be more pathetic than Craparkar. He makes Madan Lal and
Binny look like geniuses.

I don't give a darn about his bowling speeds. Last 12 tests 21 wickets. Need
I say more.
How many 4-fers in away hostel wins ?

Prasad *cannot* be compared to Agarkar. Prasad is in the mold
of Mohanty, Nehra and Yohannan, where else, Srinath, Zaheer and
Agarkar are high end seamers. High end seamers are suppose to move
the ball in the air a little bit, maintain an upright seam and get
the ball to jag off the pitch along with some more pace around
135+. Prasad, Mohanty and Nehra are accurate bowlers with
lesser pace and as a result, can get the ball to move
in the air considerably lot more than the high end seamers. That
makes them swing specialists.
Sanjay Bangar can meet the requirements that Prasad, Mohanty
and Nehra can achieve and in addition can bat very well.
It is unlikely that while all rounders are suppose to
support the high end seamers, they will get the 5-fers
like Khan and Srinath are suppose to get.
Zhan, Srinath and Agarkar are suppose to get the 5fers
with more pace, accuracy, swing and jagging the ball off
the pitch. Hence they solely are suppose to concentrate
on being match winners. Agarkar has not done that yet, agreed,
but we do not have bowlers of the caliber of Khan and
Srinath, so the plan is to develop Agarkar in that mold
because he has the talent. We may fail in the process and
right now, Yes, Agarkar is in serious jeopardy of losing his
place in the Test side. Unless we find talent at the
same level as Srinath and Khan, Agarkar is the only option.
You can use Bangar as a second seamer, but most of the
time he will end up like the Solkar's, Ghavri's and
Prabhakar's of the past who were medium pacers supporting
to wear the shine off the new ball and not making in great
impact like Kapil, Srinath and Khan.

And I always thought that Nehra and Mohanty moved the ball around quite a lot.
Its not that Nehra is slow - he has often bowled with an average speed of 132
odd.

You are kidding. Agarkar is not *that* indispensable to the fortunes of the
Indian team in Tests that you would persist in clubbing him with the likes of
Khan and Srinath. Or equate Bangar with Nehra. Bangar has shown some success in
the last two Tests. That does not make him an equal of Nehra. Their speeds,
bowling styles, wicket taking abilities, run restricting abilities are totally
different.
> It is unlikely that while all rounders are suppose to

Which is why Agarkar does not deserve to be #1 or #2 pacer. If a batsman is
injured in Tests, then he might have a shot but even then there are better
batsmen waiting for their chance in Tests - Kaif, Mongia to name just two.

If he had the talent, he would have shown gradual improvement after the Aussie
tour. Instead, his performance has just fallen away. Barring Headingley, where
each and every Indian bowler had success, he has simply sucked. He was retained
for T3 purely because he was a better batsman than Nehra.
> right now, Yes, Agarkar is in serious jeopardy of losing his

Which rests upon the (big) assumption that Nehra cannot make a comeback / gets
injured / beats up Ganguly / etc.

Bangar is a #4 bowler who had to open the bowling with Khan in Eng T4I2 owing to
the "terrifically fast, penetrative" Agarkar having sucked worse than Craig
White. Says a lot about Agarkar.

A better question would be what the heck you were doing since 99-00
when
Dravid started crapping badly in Tests? Now that he has come into
form, i
see you muster some courage to get back into rsc. Otherwise, weren't
you the same person who said Dravid is better than Tendulkar in 1997
only to get egg on your face after the Aus tour when you conveniently
disappeared or rather ran away from rsc. Atleast, Agarkar bats(series
avg. of 42) unlike chutiyanath who crapped both with the bat and ball
in the WI tour(14 wkts in 5 tests for a 10-year experienced bowler!!).
Ask yourself what the heck chutiyanath was doing in the ODI team
contributing zilch with the bat and bowling shit in the slog overs for
several years besides not contributing to any wins???
Devdas
Why blame him? He has got his lips glued where the
sun dont shine, you and the other idiot have got
yours glued where the moon cant be seen. Give us
all a rest, take your south west indian crap elsewhere.
How many other players would be given 3-4 series to see if they could
make the grade as Test players abroad after what is already a fairly
solid record of non-achievement with the ball? And I don't just mean
Indian players, I mean players from any country. And what is this
putative country supposed to do with two years' worth of foreign trips
while this mediocrity carries on proving that he simply doesn't have
the ability to be a front-line Test bowler? When do they get the
chance to select someone less embarrassing?
The only reason for persisting with a bowler whose Test record so far
is as bad as Aggy's is that there really is nobody else woth
experimenting with.
Cheers,
Mike
Was he really the 5th bowler used?
Perhaps Aggy should try angling for the other opening spot, to give Sehwag a
place in the middle order.
Cheers, ymt.

Lets just say that they set off similar amounts of pandemonium on the
suck-o-meter :)

The M. O. is packed. And even if that happens, Sehwag would probably quickly get
replaced with Kaif / Mongia. It has not been a very succesful tour for him.
But what you suggest is a little funny. A fast medium and a medium pace bowler
(Bangar) opening, not the bowling, but the batting :) Gavaskar would be turning
in his shoes at the thought !
England, maybe.
Agarkar - 14 matches 34 wkts @ 42.64
Flintoff - 21 matches 33 wkts @ 47.15
Agarkar - 304 runs @ 15.20
Flintoff - 643 runs @ 19.48
Actually now the ASS (Agarakar Support Specialists) crowd are asking
for 3-4 away series before he can be productive to the Indian team!

Touche! But I'm sure this won't stop Mike from his rk-style
Agarkar-bashing because :
a) Agarkar's hernia and appendix are still in working order.
b) Agarkar doesn't run through brick walls all day.

Never mind. Neither will this series result stop him from telling us that

So what?
Sometime last year, I had said that he has more potential with the bat
than with the ball, despite the fact that he had 5 ducks in Australia
and was atleast statistically our best bowler there. This series was
his first since I wrote that and he proved it here with a batting
average of 42 and a bowling average of 65.
