In the privacy of the polling booth when average American white man is
presented with an option to vote for a black or a white, he will
choose the white man. :-(

Are you accusing white men to be liars or racists ?

They call it the "Bradley Effect"

I think the BE is greatly over-estimated.

If (shudder) McEvil wins it will be because the neo-cons have, again,
stolen the election.

Having said that, I think if Obama was white he'd be polling around
70%.... sad, sad America.

You explicitly implied with your comments that white American men are
"racist".

What would be your analysis about White British Men if Obama is running for
Prime Minister in your country UK ?

I think the UK is fuckload LESS racist than the US. Obama would win in
a landslide in the UK.

However, I've lived in Aus for too long to say that with any
confidence. In Aus, he'd definitely win in a landslide.

White Britishers ?

Are you sure Obama will win in a landslide in the land of John Howards and

Republicans have the best organized machine to get their supporters to vote

Obama wouldnt have made it that far if not for the 8 yr iraq war, the
current financial crisis and 6.3% unemployment rate.

RSA has a black president/prime minister.

I think Obama would have made it that far in UK but definitely not in
Australia.

Well first of all this is a world poll and not one that is just
restricted to ICC controlling countries like Australia, RSA and UK!

Secondly, it is easier for the folks from these countries to say they
support an Obama when they don't have an Obama like choice on hand in
their own country! Ever stop to think why that we have not heard of a
Obama like candidate in those countries in the first place?

Only in USA would a person like Obama aspire and possibly become the
leader of the country not in Australia, UK or RSA!

Yes, but they got a huge voter turnout from the religious right for
Bush in 04 and Obama is likely to drag in a lot of extra people while
McCain isn't and Palin is likely to lose votes in cities (the country
areas might be interesting there though)

Obama is an african-american with a real chance of winning the
election, that's going to get people excited and will probably result
in them actually bothering to vote.

A person 'like' Obama? You mean black? Or something else?

You know, it's a real shame that people 'like you' seem to spend all
their time and effort poisoning any discussion like this. You are so
divorced from reality that one can't even look at words and think they
are simply contrary.

ps: RSA's first elected pres, in fully representative democratic
election, was black.

Thats being disingenuous to Obama's campaign and the candidate
himself! If you have closely followed the election, the campaigning
you would see it was run smartly and I think could have given the run
for the money to its competitors even if the above reasons did not
exist.

By the way the war in Iraq has been on for 5 years.

Not sure who you are asking this question. But I think the opposite.
The very fact that a white majority country like USA is on the verge
of having its first black president, not some one elected as a token
for affirmative action, but some one who is getting elected because he
IS the best person to win! It is a testimony that not all of USA is
racist. There may be pockets in the country side with racist mentality
but that kind of minorities with extreme views can be found in all
other countries too..

Saying any candidate wouldn't have made it this far without Iraq is
pointless. Iraq HAPPENED. It's history. It's IMPORTANT history. It's a
fact that cannot be changed, and ofc it has a bearing on the
candidates policies.

As for the financial crisis (and I'll lump unemployment in with it)...

I think, rightly, that it has had a negative effect on GOP support.
However, I think there were two bigger factors that aided Obama;

1) The debates
2) Palin

Obama's poll numbers started changing after the FIRST debate. Leading
up to it McCain and Obama were pretty close. After the first debate
people finally realised that Obama was more than ready to be Pres.
Before that there was some doubt due to his age, lack of experience
and short Senate role. Combined with McCain being edgy/grumpy, Obama's
numbers started to swing up.

Palin: Yikes. What a mistake. Elections are won/lost with the swing
voters. The GOP could not have made a bigger mistake than picking
Palin.

Most of the blue collar white americans are voting for Obama because they
lost their jobs, homes and their 401k shrunk by 50%.

McCain would have won this election if NOT for those three factors.

Democratic campaign strategists outsmarted the republican campaign
strategists this time around unlike in 2000 and 2004.

They lost their jobs and homes a long time ago, ie before the DNC.

As for the financial crisis, Obama's poll lead happened BEFORE this
crisis.

The polls have barely changed post-crisis.

Nope.

If not for the three reasons I mentioned, Obama would have lost no matter
how smart the democratic campaign strategists are.

It wont change my argument whether it is 5 yrs or 8 yrs.

Okay its a 7 yr Afghan and Iraq wars combined.

We are NOT talking about "any" candidate. We are talking about Obama who is
half black half white.

GOP is already talking about Palin in 2012.

The swing voters mostly will vote for Obama this time because of iraq war
mess, financial crisis and 6.3% unemployment rate and not because of Palin.

George Bush Sr would have won in 1992 vs Clinton if NOT for the messy
economy and unemployment rate.

I just heard on MSNBC, 90% of the voters said "economy" is the most
important factor that influenced their vote.

Obama is not African-American. His father is Kenyan and his other a
white American. The term African-American is used to refer to
Americans who are descendents of the African slaves.

As per CNN, the Black Voters have increased by 1% & overall new
voters have reduced by 1% as compared to 2004.

However, I still think Obama will will still win on the back of white
liberal guilt. The only person I can think of who was less deserving
to become a president was probably George W Bush.

Nice reverse woof there...McCain on track to a heavy electoral college
defeat, along with a bunch of Senate seats that were Republican going
Democratic. And all of that is without the ultra-Blue California even
yet being a factor. I have the champagne chilling. Sweet.

Your comment explicitly implied White American Men are racist.

Now you are trying to cover it up with an idiotic and illogical statement.

This is what you said in case you forgot:

I can't see how this implies racism. It is about a choice between what
you know and what you don't know. Nothing about hating blacks or
whites.

If you think my statement was about racism then you're a fucking
retard.

Just one thing;

when people in Aus talk about 'White America', there's an automatic
implication of racism, as to us* that is PART of the definition of
'White America'.

'Caucasian America' is something entirely different.

* generally speaking, as I obviously don't speak for ALL of Aus.

Technically speaking, Obama is the son of an African immigrant
(his father was Kenyan) and a white American. So that does make
him "African-American" in a sense, though he is obviously, *not*
a descendant of any African slaves brought to America. And he
does command a huge share of the African-American vote, which
is a "no-brainer", anyways. Obama, throughout his campaign,
continually stressed that this election was not about race.
But whether Obama liked it or not, race was a significant
"sub-text" in the battle for the US Presidency.

Its extremely rare criminals plead guilty. Likewise I dont expect you to
plead guilty of your racism.

You never complain about the chucking of Brett Lee, Shaun Tait, Dale Steyn
and Kyle Mills but will obssessively complain about Murali, Razzaq and
Samuels.

Go see a shrink for your obssession of Murali the greatest spinner of all

Where have you been. Just before Lehman Brother collapsed, both were
pretty much even. And at that time Iraq war was the main issue. As
soon as the wall street mess started, McCain's numbers started to go
down. Economy is the only reason he lost. And the fact that he would
have continued to spend billions of dollars on Iraq/Afghan war each
month, when Americans are struggling at home.

I think GWB is ANOTHER of the big reasons. He'll go down as the most
