Question - Match winners and number of man/player of the match awards

players (all times) with respect to winning the man/player of the
match awards? This statistic or some variant of it (such as percentage
of man of the match awards over the career) got to be a good indicator
of the match winning abilities of players. I think if we get this
list it will reveal an interesting list of game's greats.

But only for the last 30-40 years or so (assuming we are talking about
Tests), as before that they didn't have such awards. So Bradman, for
instance, never won one.

I tried compiling a list about 5 years ago. The most was 17 by Wasim Akram, then 14 by
Ambrose, Warne & Steve Waugh. Warne probably has more since then.

Interestingly, most are bowlers.........and rest could be counted as
all rounders (with the exception of Sangakkara....., but he could be

save matches. This data kind of proves it out. Also I am surprised to
see some of the key bowlers missing such as Headlee, Richards, Donald,
also surprised to see DeSilva in the top ten.

I don't know how good an indicator this statistic would be. There were
incidents where MoM was given to players in the losing team(eg:
Gavaskar MoM for his Bangalore 96 vs Pak where Touseef & Qasim won the
game for Pak). There were "Men" of the match awards in certain games
(eg: plenty in India, even the Lord's game where Greenidge's 214
helped to chase 300+ in two sessions, both Botham and Greenidge shared
it). The adjudication process itself was questionable at times (in
certain ODIs I remember SRT getting MoM when someone else really did
better in the game) and so on.
I am curious to know where Bharath Purohit got his numbers from.
Cricinfo doesn't have MoM for all games from last ~30 yrs.. right?

It also suggests that wicketkeepers tend to be overlooked. When
wicketkeepers /have/ won MoM, it's almost always been for their batting.
