GO COLTS!!!
Why are 3rd innings (but still in deficit) left out?

because that is not the point of this list or have I missed your point (
sorry than )?
The point of this list is to list teams that are '1 Wicket away from
losing the match'[I know the title doesn't mislead us and is indeed
correct]. This list is the sub-set of the full list which most people
are interested. There is absolutely no difference between 'fighting to
avoid innings defeat' vs 'fighting to avoid runs defeat' in these
exciting matches.

Fair enough. I can't think of any such matches off hand but than again that
is why we have Aslam
If I've used Statsguru correctly, you're right, there are no such
matches. The closest are England v SA at Old Trafford in 1998, when
the scores were level at the end, and the Test at Cardiff last summer.
In both matches, England were still facing an innings defeat when the
9th wicket fell.
At Cardiff, England had overtaken Australia by 13 runs
At the end they had. When the 9th wicket fell, they were 6 runs behind.

Match abandoned due to riots. No guarantees Australia would have won,
of course, but there was plenty of time remaining when it happened.

NZL robbed - at least two plumb lbws were turned down in the dying
overs.

Another near miss, but which did produce a result, was Christchurch 1991/92.
New Zealand was still four runs in arrears of England with ten minutes
remaining when the final wicket fell.
Andrew
"Gaah! Sydney". Just another over or two would have sufficed.
IvWI 2001-02 5th test is another case where it started raining
immediately after the last wicket had fallen and didn't stop for a
week. Wright says that he took the top order batsmen who had perished
while playing grandiose strokes out to the balcony to watch the
pouring rain with a "Now about the stroke that you played ..." sermon.

Captain Crowe was dismissed trying to hit the four that would have levelled
the scores and saved the game, there not being time for a change of innings.
Andrew
6.2 of the final 20 overs remained to be bowled.
I remember reading at the time that the umpires said that if Crowe had
been out the next ball, England would have had 1 over to score the run
needed. Can't see anything online which confirms or denies this.
Here is a list of all Tests which were drawn after 9 wickets were down

are listed first.

GO COLTS!!!
So, if I am reading this right and barring rain issues, the only
"nailbiting finshes" in this supplementary list would appear to be in
the 1998 Manchester and 2009 Cardiff matches....
As always, many thanks, Aslam.
