Though there's nothing in Alvey's rules to say we can't pick different players for each Test, so I don't see what's cheating about it.
Anyway, as an England supporter, my picks for T1 are:
England:
Vaughan, Caddick (and I have to say I'm incredibly surprised to be picking him), and reserves Trescothick and Jones.
Since I don't expect England to get 20 wickets in the match, and there are no rules against picking 2 batsmen, I'll go for the openers. If Vaughan isn't fit, I'll have Butcher instead. If Tresco isn't fit either, I'll go for Thorpe - it's not as though it'll make any difference.

Those not watching the game live, ie relying only on the sporadic action on this group, will not be aware that Di had to *check with me* that she was taller *before* posting the above. (There's not much in it - but she's the one who is still 6 feet tall even when lying on her back).
Next thing I know, she'll be asking my permission to select a South Australian. "Oh, but he *would have* taken 9 wickets if he had *played* ..."

That would be only four changes of players, not ten.

Hard, isn't it? Asking yourself which Australians are most likely to fail. Identifying Langer as the third weakest link in the XII says a lot. At this stage (8:35am Monday) I do not expect Bung Lee to be in the starting lineup.

I think your understanding of the rules may be different from mine. As an England supporter, don't the points that the Australians score get deducted from those that the English score? So unless you are taking a very bold position, I wouldn't think you'd want to pick Gilchrist and McGrath. -- John Hall "It is a very sad thing that nowadays there is so little useless information." I'm a little unsure of the rules of this, but I'll do as most others are doing:

That's a ruddy good point. In which case
Aus: Gillespie, Warne (Lehmann).
We're going to get a minus anyhow, and by picking two bowlers we'll get a maximum of 200 against us. Probably significantly less if Pidge gets his share of the innings. So if Vaughan and Tresco can manage 150 between them in 2 innings, ave 40/innings, we'll probably be in the black.

But equally, it's hard for me to pick out which England players are going to fail. Unless they pick Hoggard, and if conditions on Thursday are much like what they've been for this game I sincerely hope they don't, because he'll get smashed all over the place.
Oh, OK, I don't hold out all that much hope that Giles is going to take a whole bunch of wickets. The moot point there is whether that constitutes failure as long as he's economical enough to give the pacers a decent breather. And I have my suspicions about whwther Crawley will cut it.
But Trescothick and Hussain have already shown some decent form, Vaughan seems to be going great guns as I write, Butcher's 173* last year suggests he doesn't need to wobble in his boots against these bowlers, Stewart's no mug, Caddick's been looking surprisingly good so far, and the new quicks have at least had some decent spells. Man for man, I think they look slightly better than the NZ team of 12 months ago, and they didn't make arseholes of themselves. That lot got a 0-0 result with some fairly generous weather inteventions, but most observers gave them credit for a pretty game performance.
At the moment, I think England are good enough to stretch Australia, but not far enough to make it likely that they'll be broken. The series result is almost certain to be one-sided, but I think the actual matches will be a little closer than that.

I suppose I could make my aim to do better than last time, I guess (when I came last, or close to it).
Aus: McGrath & Warne (backup Gilchrist) Eng: Crawley and Jones (backup Giles)
