With Laxman's sudden retirement, this seems like an excellent time for India to think of reshuffling its batting order. Sehwag has sometimes expressed an interest (or a willingness?) to bat down the order. Sehwag's away performances have been poor over the last year, and he is unlikely to be the best choice at opener when India goes touring again---with his style of play, a slight decline in reflexes will be quickly exploited by opening bowlers. In addition, there is a replacement opener in the squad, Rahane. This seems like a good time to go with Gambhir, Rahane, Kohli, Tendulkar, Sehwag, and Pujara as the top 6.

I'm not sure what the thinking was behind Badri's selection. Badri has been very reliable at the domestic level, but it seemed that Tiwary was next in line for a middle order slot, particularly after his decent performances in the SL odos. It could be that the selectors were nervous about having too many young players in the middle order, so Badri will play in the XI with Kohli and Pujara, with Rahane sitting out. That would mean Sehwag continuing to open as well.

I expected that as well -- I doubt Sehwag could open successfully for India in 2013 onwards in RSA, England, Australia, but he could be a superb #5 (or even a #4). Instead, we went back to Raina...

Raina will do well and he will be tried once more in an overseas series.
Sreekanth has reigned over a pretty stupid selection committee.
