Alvey is currently in intensive care, having suffered a major heart
attack after reading the above article. It is touch and go whether he
will survive.

Cheers,

Mike

Worse from his pov is that he has been transferred to a NSW hospital and is
being treated by a Victorian Dr

Alvey's fine. He expected this.
It's the NSV Deniers that are in shock, as surely now they have nothing to hide behind.

Clarke/Haddin could carry on for some time. Who else, though? The common refrain could be 'Anyone but Smith'. Your local captains are Hope, Rohrer, White, Bailey, Voges and Botha(x). Would you want any of them in your Test team?

That's absolutely correct jz.

All Brettig has achieved here is to remove all doubt about him being a 100% NSW pimp with neither cricket knowledge nor conscience. It makes you wonder how the fuck he got/keeps his job. Not.

But never forget... It's Qlders what is mad parochial.

Footnoting on Brettig: I've occasionally replied, nicely but contrarily, to some of his pr releases but none have ever made it to his Replies. This seems to be a theme with Brettig. A lot of his Replies have the same ring of authenticity about them as do letters to the editor of Penthouse.

It's hard to win this argument, as the entire top 8 last Test were from NSW.

If Clarke died today whom would I pick? Any Aus player. To be captain for, say, 5 years?

Goodness, it's slim pickings.

Tim Payne would be on my shortlist, although I never know how fit he is, and I'm a bit old fashioned and think a batsman should be captain (another reason not to pick Smith)
I'd pick Watson over Smith, although I'd probably not even select Watson.

Well that rules out the Aus top order apart from Clarke

Mark Taylor was four years away from his Test debut when Allan Border first assumed the Test captaincy. He was still a season away from his first class debut.

In fact David Boon was the only player to play Test Cricket under the captaincy of both Kim Hughes and Mark Taylor whilst Craig McDermott was the only other player to play in a Test alongside Hughes and under Taylor. Dean Jones and Greg Matthews were captained by Hughes in Tests & ODI's and by Taylor in just ODI's.

Steve Waugh captained Australia in Test Cricket before Adam Gilchrist made his Test debut and when S.Waugh was unavailable for a Test it was Gilchrist who took over the captaincy.

Ricky Ponting was Test captain before Michael Clarke played Test Cricket. In fact Clarke's Test debut came when Ponting was unavailable due to injury.

It's not that far fetched the next long-term captain of the Australian Test team is currently not in the side.

Smith has plenty of leadership credentials already at age 23. He doesn't yet have the game to have a substantial Test career, but he does have time on his side and if he gets his game in complete order will have experience on his side.

I remember after the 1989 Ashes Tour a lot of experts were asked to name their 1993 side. All of them had Taylor and Steve Waugh in the side, only half had Allan Border, they all had Mark Waugh in the side, most had Craig McDermott making a successful comeback, most had the no.2 spinner Tim May in the side and all believe it or not had Tim Zoehrer in the squad. But not one squad list had Michael Slater, Shane Warne or Paul Reiffel - all three strong performers on that Ashes Tour.

Steve Smith isn't that far fetched. If his game matures with his age and he warrants a Test spot he will be the most qualified option as Test captain...

The non-keeper argument has lost a bit of cred with Dhoni's success. Albeit he's always captained a side of thirteen...

And why do you think that *Paine* isn't being selected/encouraged? Could it possibly be that he's seen as a threat to the NSW captaincy hegemony?

Speaking of keepers... I read that another SoB (Son of Billy) has made the Qld squad.

How many of those have you sent but not had published? Feel free to share, especially if they're along the lines of:

"Dear Editor, After three Viagras, I used to have a tumescent reaction to your magazine, until you started featuring models from New South Wales and Victoria. Since they are relatively hairless, do not whine very much, and are ostensibly female, they do not excite me. My aging member has now completely fallen off. Please ensure that Andrew Symonds is selected for the Australian side in the Ashes, or else I will sue you for dismemberment. Many thanks, Alvey."
