And Laxman...what on earth was he doing, taking singles off the first
ball of the over (repeatedly, at that) with no.10 Zaheer in? Rather
clueless batting there; as the senior bat, he's got to make some
attempt to farm the bowling and protect the tail. Well-played for his
65, but the last 7 were poorly done.
A lead of 45 is not enough. I agree with Aamir Sohail; Pakistan must
feel as if they've been let out of jail.

Reminds me of that the last test in Pakistan. After being down 39 for
6 in the first innings, Pakistan got to a fighting total, contained
India and batted like champs to run up a huge score in their second
outing. And thrashed India. We have moved from a stroll down that
road to a lope now and are getting ready for the sprint.

Make that Munaf is clueless and should be dropped. Sreesanth should
have played. I can't see why he is sitting this game out. And then
whatever happened to Balaji? Wasn't he the only swing bowler that we
had that could bowl into the 130s?

Beats me too. Very strange tactics by Laxman.
Suresh
I thought the batting on the second day by India, except the effort by
Dhoni and Laxman, was by far worse. Once Kumble was prised out by a
good one it was only a matter of time before the innings folded
Sreesanth is hurt and so is RP Singh. Munaf is playing only because
those two are hurt.
Notwithstanding the inaccuracy of your description of Balaji, I'm
surprised you do not know that Balaji has been out of cricket for long
while now due to injuries. He hasn't even played Ranjis for quite a
while. He is supposed to make a slow comeback in the domestics in the
middle of this season. Don't you follow any domestic cricket at
all? :-)

Either very selfish or very stupid, and not sure which is worse.
Sanjiv Karmarkar
This is typically how he plays. I cant recall a time in the recent
past where VVS has farmed the strike while playing with the tail.
Presumably his way of telling the captain that he needs to move up the
order?
Now that we have a new captain, perhaps its time to think about asking
Ganguly to bat with the tail but there is nothing to prove that he
will do a better job of farming the strike - given his reputation.
> Sanjiv Karmarkar
India now seem sure of losing the test match. Based on their precedent
at choking whilst chasing against Pak this is a goner.
Any 4th inn score greater than 250 runs is won for Pak.
The problem lies in the way they're playing test cricket, Its a mode
wrought by too much playing of other versions.
Pakistan displayed their impatience on day 1 ,India fared marginally
better but still imploded. Do not expect any second inn miracles, the
match will be close , maybe even tantalizingly so but still Pak has
this game in the bag.
He should have been ahead of Ganguly to begin with, but this is no way
to convey a message. Besides test matches are just too important a
stage.

Ganguly's reputation is actually not too bad in this regard. ISTR him
gamely rallying the tail on more than one occasion, although the lack
of solidity in his own batting makes him a dubious candidate to
inspire confidence in the tail.
Why, the last time India played Pak at Delhi, he put on a crucial
stand of 100 with Srinath which took Pak's target from unlikely to
near-impossible.

No question. D3 was a bunch of tail-enders failing to stick around and
a middle-order bat with no strategy to protect them. D2 was a test top-
order being dismissed for under 100 on a good day for batting. As a
lowlight in Indian batting, this collapse is on par with recent I4
tragi-comedies against Eng/Pak/RSA. When India begin I4, they will do
so with a certain lack of confidence, and Pakistan will do so with
their tail up. Not a position you want to begin an I4 chase in.
Another collapse in I4, and the batting is a question mark for the
rest of the series, if not the entire season.
There's a reason Australia believe the first innings of a series to be
vital to the outcome of the series itself.
When India begin their post-mortem tomorrow I hope that that collapse
comes out as #1 cause of defeat. The rest (87 run 9th wkt partnership
conceded, Laxman/tail fiasco, Jaffer's drop) are all subsidiary
reasons.
-Samarth.
> good one it was only a matter of time before the innings folded- Hide quoted text -
Laxman is not a big hitter and is not exactly quick between the
wickets so you have got to wonder how motivated he would be to farm
the strike. Please also remember that recently he's also been involved
in useful late wicket partnerships with the very players who committed
cricketing suicide in this innings. So it seems unfair to blame Laxman
WI chased 275 to the day 20 years ago, in DBV's debut Test as skip.
Ramapriya
Shariq, I think there are patches on the wicket where the ball is
keeping low. There were cracks on the wicket right from day 1. Its
going to be 'fun' to bat on on D4 and D5.

Jaffer's drop? Whom did he drop?
Suersh
He dropped Misbah at short-leg when he was on 1.
54.6 Kumble to Misbah-ul-Haq, no run, dropped, Misbah lunged forward and
that and got an inside edge which flew towards Jaffer at forward short leg,
it flew at a comfortable chest height and should have been taken, it was a
sitter by short-leg's standards
In this case it could be a very costly error.

There are other Indian * swing * bowlers that bowl into the 130s? Or
does Balaji not merit the description?

I knew from an earlier thread that he was injured. But didn't know
that he was out that badly. Thought that it was a combination of
injury and the usual Indian featherbeds that are heartbreakers for
fast bowlers that denied him his comeback. If it is indeed a stress
fracture of his back, its going to be really hard to make a comeback.
Dennis Lillee did manage to come back from back injury - was it a
stress fracture though? Not easy for mortals to emulate that feat.
I am really disgusted with Munaf Patel. Every time I see him play the
disgust grows. His dishonesty in T3 in South Africa when he carried an
injury and did not fully explain to the team and coach - led to India
limping in innings four with two bowlers and a tired, sore and
overworked Sreesanth and losing the series. Can't field, can't bat and
from the looks of it, can't bowl either. Pathan might have been a
better pick. Just as ineffective with the ball but might have added 25
- 30 valuable runs in a partnership with VVSL. Plus he is a workhorse
that will bowl 25 overs and fields well. Munaf is bad news.

Guilty as charged.

Lillee had a couple of stress fractures in his back.
iirc so have Bond and Mitchell Johnson.

India will win this with eventually surprising ease.
Ramapriya
This is a batsmen's match to give away. Pakistani top order has done
it twice (well the opening stand in the second was decent but a large
chunk of it went to wiping off the deficit) and the Indian's have done
it once. The question is will the Indian batsmen be able to hold their
heads in the fourth innings. If mentally they can withstand it and
they get a decent amount of time on day 4 this should be a wrap.

DBV? I can't for the life of me recall who that might be... With the letters
D,B and V, I came up with this...Desmond Haynes might have captained tests
around that time. Viv obviously had captained well before then.
Oh!... I just realized you probably meant Vengsarkar... I was focusing on
WI captains. Oops! I'm going to post this anyway :))
Cheers!
Oh - I agree. I wasnt meaning to say I support what he was attempting
to do.

1 down for 40. Looks like they are doing better so far.
Hopefully fans will stop promoting (youngsters) the Jaffers, the Gambhirs,
the Karthicks, the Rohit Sharmas etc for their fielding abilities into the
Indian team.
Well it's a tactic that Steve Waugh talked up a lot.
Note that Zaheer and Laxman did put 70 on against RSA in 2006
