CI says that Daniel Vettori will arrive a day early to the UK and may play in the second Test. The good news is that Vettori will clearly be ready to play fresh off the plane, given the extensive amount of bowling he's done in the IPL. What's that you say? He hasn't played an actual match for Royal Challengers Bangalore this season? Never fear, as Mike Hesson tells us: "He's done plenty of bowling in the last couple of months in the IPL, albeit in the nets".

Reminds me of the time that Rohit Sharma couldn't buy a run during an odo series in Sri Lanka and one of the senior Indian players (possibly Gambhir?) said something like "He is our best batsman in the nets".

Yes, it was Gambhir. And Gambhir also added then that he had never seen a talent like Rohit Sharma.

<Repeat>

Since a single innings (or a small sequence of innings) are random events, it doesn't reflect a batsman's skill / ability or predict future real match performances. So, the only reliable way to measure a batsman is in the nets. (or some sort of a controlled environment where you can actually see his flaws minus the noise of randomness)

Even though it's good comedy, there is a deeper truth inside "He is batting great in nets"
