I'm on the side of the cricketers - no matter what country they come
from.
A large part of the cricket media in India is absolute rubbish. For a
long time, the Australians have been very good at handling them. It
was only in the latter half of this decade that the Indian team has
got its act together. Nowadays, both teams do a good job of handling
the Godawful tripe that the media serves up to them. If reports are to
be believed, the cricketers get paid handsomely for these
interactions.
See (http://www.rediff.com/cricket/2001/feb/21diary.htm) for an
article from nearly a decade ago.
I'm not surprised that the cricketers view it as a chore and a bore
and try to get some fun out of it. As long as it doesn't turn nasty,
I'm fine with it.
I don't go along with Greg Baum's references to colonialism and so on.

Australians play IPL and Champions League for free? How generous.

No they get paid but had been living comfortably before these competitions

Looks like the Aussies are trend-setters yet again.
"Despite going into the game as favourites, India are not taking the
Aussies lightly. "Though we are 2-1 up in the series, taking Australia
lightly will be a big mistake. They are the world champions and fierce
competitors with an uncanny ability to bounce back when the chips are down.
We will have to give our 100 per cent to come up trumps on Monday," said
Yuvraj after the Delhi match."

What would make you say that?
The OP was implying that Aussie cricketers are only now earning good
money due to India.
I was pointing out that they have been making good money for a good
number of years, nad have been doing so since before 20/20 crap.

Quite apart from the fact that the OP actually only quoted from an article,
thus couldn't be said to have implied anything at all, you need to adjust
your paranoia settings. The article doesn't say what you infer ("only now
earning good money due to India") at all; what it does say is that
Australian cricketers now earn a lot of money *in* India, which is a
relatively recent phenomenon.
Neither did the OP's quote even mention T20.
Andrew
Where is says "Thisis India, where most of Australia's cricketers now
make a royal living," clearly implies that they didn't make a "royal
living" prior to India.
> Neither did the OP's quote even mention T20.
It doesn't need to mention 20/20. Or are you suggesting that the
Australian cricketers earn a "royal living" out of other forms of
cricket in India?
CDK
So why did McGrath crawl out of retirement to participate in the same
crap 20/20 and get his bowling whacked by nameless Indian club
cricketers?

No, it doesn't.
It might be worth reviewing the difference between implication and
inference.
The article states "this is India, where most of Australia's cricketers now
make a royal living". The only implication being made by the author is that
Australia's players should treat India (and in this case its journalists)
with some respect because they make lots of money there. Anything beyond
that is an inference on your part. The word "now" could be taken to mean
that Australian players didn't in the past earn lots of money from India,
rather than that they didn't earn lots of money at all.
>> Neither did the OP's quote even mention T20.

Australian players have been raking in money from product endorsement in
India since before the IPL was on the horizon.
The fact remains that the majority of Australia's international cricketers -
in common with those of other nationalities - are falling over themselves to
take the money on offer in India, which just makes your 'we don't need
India' stance sound resentful. Similarly with Cricket Australia, whom it
appears would schedule series against India every season given half a
chance.

It took me quite some time to figure out what this thread was about.
I'm assuming that it's about the issue that Panicker comments on in
the link you provided. In which case my only thought is: why does
anyone believe that cricketers mean what they say at press conferences
anyway? My own conjecture would be that, like most other public
figures, cricketers would be trying to preserve some public image
rather than anything else.

some people just want more
What did the morons offer him?
Who wouldn't take up an offer to earn at least $US200k for a months
playing sport.
That he accepted doesn't alter the fact he earned a considerable sum
whilst playing for Australia.
That Indian companie will pay nameless club cricketers $US200k to play a
hot and giggle gams says more for their stupidity.

Have you ever listened to or read interviews. IT's the same old same
old .... a game of two halves... all credit to the boys... we've got
them and they've still got to get them... it doesn't say "lucky" in
the score book... blah blah blah blah. They all deal in cliches. If
they said anything sincere or meaningful
a) they'd have to think
b) they'd fall foul of some code of conduct somewhere or other.
That's true. I felt Dhoni in his early days of captaincy was pretty
honest about things (obviously avoiding controversies), for ex - when
they didn't practice after losing the test series to SL he said he
told the team no need for any meetings, we all know what to do so
let's not have another meeting. This particular tidbit I am not sure
if other captains would've said that. But anyway Dhoni seems to have
curbed that instinct now and is like any other captain of late
I wonder how often they tell the unvarnished truth - not just in
cricket, but in any sport.
Consider a question like "Sachin, do you have any plans for specific
South African players?"
Well he could say "Yes" or "Duh", but if they thought, for example,
that Kallis couldn't read the doosra and that's how they were going to
get him, why should he say that? So maybe he'd say "Well we think that
we can get Kallis by pitching the in-swinger up."
Plus there are things that they can't answer - and I think that the
questioner may know it. I've heard people trying to get Smith to say
that Murali chucks - or that Botha doesn't. It's a minefield. So he
just says something like "well I'm just a batsman, I leave that to the
experts to decide and in the meantime us batsmen just have to play
what is sent down to us." Which isn't a lie, but it may not be the
entire truth either.
I covered one match for Cricinfo from The Wanderers. I had press
accreditation and thus access to the press conferences. I walked away
from that match wondering why the press bothered asking questions and
why the players and coaches bothered replying, because very little of
what was said in the conference actually got into the papers.

Nothing ever gets sports media folk more angry than people refusing to
talk to them, or not taking them seriously... presumably because it
means they'll have to actually come up with something interesting to
say/write for themselves, instead of having the sportspeople do their
job for them. (But, of course, they aren't angry on behalf of
themselves - it's always on behalf of "the public").
Agreed.
Baum's piece was a hissy fit.

Stupidity certainly works as long as retired Aussie champions are
willing to fetch balls hit by schoolboys and help Indian companies
towards the billions they are after.
What it means is that BCCI is rich enough to make CA tell Symonds
'Whether you're a monkey or a golliwog, we want the remaining 2 tests.
So just shut up and play on. And oh, we're giving them the umpires
they want'
