Killing of student Nitin Garg threatens ties: India

Rick Wallace
a.. From: The Australian
a.. January 04, 2010 1:05PM

THE killing of a bright young Indian accounting graduate on the cusp of
starting his career could threaten bilateral ties between the two nations,
the Indian Government has warned.
News of the murder of Nitin Garg - stabbed to death as he walked to work in
Melbourne's west on Saturday night - has received widespread coverage on
Indian television.

The ABC has reported that Indian's External affairs minister S.M. Krishna
has condemned the attack, saying stringent action must be taken.

"This heinous crime on humanity, this is an uncivilised brutal attack on
innocent Indians," he said.

"It certainly will have some bearing on the bilateral ties between our two
countries."

The killing of Mr Garg, which police are trying to intimate was not racially
motivated, will reignite the furore surrounding the spate of attacks on
Indians in Australia.

Victoria Police's Deputy Commissioner Kieran Walshe said it was "too early
to speculate" on whether racism played any role in motivating the knife
attack, but he said investigators were keeping an "open mind".

Deputy Commissioner Walshe denied claims that Melbourne was a hotbed for
racist attacks against Indian students.

"I don't believe that there has been any really detailed racist motives
around assaults on Indian people in the past. In some cases there may well
be, but in the general sense of it, a lot of (of attacks) has been around
opportunistic theft, or opportunistic robbery," he said.

He would not comment on reports that neither Mr Garg's wallet nor money was
stolen.

The violence against Indian students and the collapse of dodgy vocational
training colleges have already dented the $15 billion-a-year overseas
student market.

Tourism Australia's forecasting agency has predicted a 20 per cent drop in
the number of Indians studying in Australia this year.

Mr Garg, originally from the Punjab in northern India, was set upon about
10pm on Saturday night as he crossed Cruickshank Park in West Footscray.

He staggered into the nearby Hungry Jacks where he worked and pleaded for
help before collapsing. Ambulance officers took him to the Royal Melbourne
Hospital, but he was unable to be saved.

Federation of Indian Students spokesman Gautam Gupta today called on
cricketing legends Shane Warne and Ricky Ponting to speak out against
violence against Indian students.

Mr Gupta said the two cricket stars had huge followings in India and it was
about time they voiced their concerns.

"There is a lot of frustration within the Indian community with the way this
is being handled," Mr Gupta said.

"People are losing confidence with every passing day."

He said Ponting and Warne "should jump in and defend Indian students in
Australia".

"Shane Warne is an icon in India - he has millions of fans."

And how many Australians have been murdered in the past month?

I've been saying the same thing! I don't know how anyone has concluded
that this is race related. Australians get killed in Australia too.

As a random example, there was a young Australian male that was killed
in Greece last year - I certainly didn't hear anyone in Australia
blaming race or the threat of ties between countries being severed.
Unfortunately, people get assaulted/murdered and often for no good
reason at all. Australians going to India are not immune either,
though if it happened I certainly wouldn't think it must be race
related.

How do you know it was an Australian who committed the crime? There
are many people living in Australia, even Indians.

Further to my point (not that I know why I bother reasonding to an
idiot like SD);

Quoted from: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/asia/article6977296.ece

The motive for the attacks, many of which were by Lebanese street
gangs, appeared to be robbery. Victorian police said they were
opportunistic rather than racist, with Indian students being targeted
by street gangs gangs because they were less street-wise than local
youths.

But others said the issues involved were more complex than straight-
forward racism or street crime.

Bob Birrell, an influential researcher at Monash University said the
attacks occurred because the boom in foreign students forced them into
less affluent, crowded suburbs where they competed for jobs and
housing with low-skill youths from other migrant backgrounds.

There is no call for that. There is no humour in that whatever. What
you have said is just plain sickening.

Such acts, although having no bearing on cricket whatever, are
results of sub-human behaviour, whether perpetrated by Europeans or
non-Europeans. Apparently this murder though had no relation to any
racism in particular, and was carried out by thugs from gangs (who
incidentally it appears are drawn from Australians of a Lebanese
background) whose motive was robbery.

The reaction in some quarters in India (by no means all) has been a
hysterical overreaction. Murders when they occur, are (or at least
should be) shocking things, but aren't usually called 'crimes against
humanity'. Where I live is considered a fairly safe part of Australia
I think, but recently a young caucasian male was stabbed to death by
another caucasian male.

You would only need a cunning plan if the people you were trolling were

If you exclude intraracial murders, probably none.

Your paranoia about white races verges on psychosis, but it helps us
understand the over-the-top Indian press reaction.

We have larger Aboriginal, Maori, Sri Lankan, Vietnamese, African, Japanese
and Chinese populations in Australia. Even a lot of Muslim arabs. Friction
is rare and certainly no worse than anywhere else..

So why on earth would we pick on a very few Indians? Other than yourself
they are also a pretty inoffensive lot. AND they like cricket!!

Who's "we"? You're right in that our society is comprised of many and
various groups, but a lot of migrant communities, particularly the recent
arrivals, have marked differences in culture. Another generation or two and
hopefully things will be different, but for now there's a lot of obnoxious
ethnic youths and twice as many obnoxious Aussie yobbo fuckwits with
Southern Cross tattoos and Australian flag boxer shorts getting around.

I went to school with blokes whose very Greek and Italian surnames revealed
their parents' heritage, but who were as Aussie as I am. The present
generation being Australianised will have kids similar to my schoolmates,
but it's far too early IMO to start overusing the term "we" to describe the
whole place. We are a nation of communities, plural.

I am a few thousand kilometres from where these incidents have occurred, but
the "word" in the media, reading between the lines, is apparently that there
is friction between ethnic Middle Eastern youths and Indians. I have spent a
very short amount of time in Western Sydney and have observed how clannish
the Middle Eastern community can be (wondering why they're all referred to
as "Lebanese", though). Young fuckwits of any ethnic derivation are trouble
in groups (witness the Bra Boys), but I must say the incidents making the
news involving bouncers being stabbed or shot seem invariably to feature
young fuckwits who happen to also be first generation Australians.

My brother and his mates were threatened with machetes by an Indian
shopkeeper and his sons about 15 years ago (aged about 18) because they
checked out the shopkeeper's daughter (who was the same age). This would
have been unthinkable coming from an Australian shopkeeper. It says a lot
about the way people from different cultures handle confrontations.

There are plenty of violent white Australian criminals in jail, so there's
no pretending it's impossible the perpetrator of this murder could not
possibly be a white Anglo-Saxon, but if the perpetrator is someone who still
regards himself as a national of his country of origin, describing him as
Australian is not only unfair, but incorrect.

Finally, asserting that the actions of a murderer are a reflection on any
other member of this society are just plain laughable. Those jumping up and
down making such accusations, or feeling offended by them, ought to pull
their heads in.
