MANAGUA, Nicaragua -- Former boxing champion Alexis Arguello,
considered one of the best lightweights to step in the ring, has been
found dead.
Presidential spokeswoman Rosario Murillo confirmed Arguello's death
early Wednesday.
A great champ, a class act and his first bout w/Aaron Pryor was one of
the most exciting of all time.
RIP
From an article on Yahoo sports:
"...Presidential spokeswoman Rosario Murillo confirmed Arguellos death
and an autopsy was pending. The La Prensa newspaper reported Arguello was
found with a gunshot wound to the chest..."
I am curious if they suspect suicide. No mention of any signs of break-in,
or any foul play.
RIP. He was a great fighter and battled a few demons over the years.

That is very sad. Arguello was one of favorites in his day and his
losses to Pryor were devastating to me. It looks like Arguello was
murdered, probably by a robber.
BTW, Mayweather-JMM has been rescheduled for September 19th.

Alexis Arguello has had bouts with depression. Perhaps this was a suicide...

Was a world champ from 1974-1983, Feather, Jr. Light and Light.
Had wins over:
Ruben Olivares
Royal Kobayashi
Alfredo Escalera
Bazooka Limon
"Schoolboy" Bobby Chacon
Jose Luis Ramirez
Jim Watt
Ray Mancini
Claude Noel
Kevin Rooney. Just to name a few.
Arguello was battling depression and years ago I remember him having a
cocaine addiction. Sounds like a suicide to me.Very sad to hear. That
is how I got started boxing in the first place. My dad (who is from
Nicaragua) was a huge Arguello fan and the first boxing gloves I put
on were autographed Arguello gloves.
To think that at that age I didn't know any better and boxed with
those gloves. I should have kept them in a safe place, but alas being
young and naive those gloves took a hell of a beating and were
discarded. RIP Alexis. You will be missed.
He was one of the greatest featherweights of all time. The same was
true of Jr. Lightweight. He was a very strong lightweight champ. His
lean frame still allowed him to be a really top Jr. Welter, but not
able to beat Aaron Pryor, who was a buzz saw. Most other Jr. Welters
would have fallen to Alex that night.
Nah. Duran was always the bigger man. And when Alexis finally moved up
to 135 in 1980, Duran had already been fighting at 147 for over a
year.
He will be missed.
