Amazingly, he's doing it with close and debatable losses, and it's way
to soon to utter words like "heavyweight division revival" but
Philadelphia's Steve Cunningham is centerpiecing the success of NBC's
newish "Fight Night" specials.
"Our Fight Night telecasts have drawn strong viewership as evidenced
by the 1.2 million who tuned in on [April] 20" said Gary Quinn, Vice
President of Programming at NBC Sports Group.
Promoter Main Events says "as far as we can tell from publicly
released ratings, it appears we had the highest rated boxing program
in the United States in 2012 and now the highest rated program so far
in 2013, which feels pretty good!"
They're talking about boxing shows that Cunningham headlined.
What's this mean for Steve? In my opinion it means he doesn't go into
the bin of day-job-working heavyweights waiting for a ranked fighter
to cough up $60,000 or $75,000 for an opponent, and he sure as heck
doesn't get resigned to the community colleges, carnivals, and Cancn
circuit. He's likely fine already, and solid management and agentry
can make a big financial deal of him.
Looking forward to the threepeat.
