Melanie, are you reading this? You might give a few
suggestion on where to look for qualifications to become
a boxing official. Starting with the amateur venues
seems to be a good place to start.

If you are serious about becoming a referee, you might want to
check with your state's boxing commission and see what their
requirements are. Most want you to have at least two years of amateur
experience, if not more.

Amateur boxing offers OTJ training, starting with becoming a
time keeper, graduating to judge and, after about a year - and
depending on how active your are - training to referee. Most new refs
start out at local shows and in the ring with the little kids (ages 8
to 11 or 12) and the lighest weights (60 to 106 Lbs.).

There is a yearly membership fee to join USA Boxing and it is
all volunteer - no payment for officiating. If you're interested,
please email me at m...@amateurboxing.com, tell me the city and state
you live in and I'll give you a contact.

Thanks, Mel. I, for one, respect your and Rick's dedication
through thick and thin for the development of young folks
through the medium of amateur boxing. Such gifts of your time
and support may go often un-noticed and, at times, unrewarded.
however, in the big pciture - life - all is very valuable.

Donn - thanks much for your kind words. 8-) I've learned to
not pay attention to most of the adults who frequent the sport; the
athletes are a different story. As long as they strive for
excellence, Rick and I will continue to plug along. It will be 21
years for me in May. And one of the nicest experiences of those 21
years was meeting you.

Likewise to you and Rick. The kids need people who care and are
willing to help them along in whatever chosen activities that
helps them grow strong with characer and integrity.

By the way, you both have always handled yourselves with such grace
in the face of some rather harsh, un-needed words. I don't know how
you've done it, but thank God, you've done it.

Oh - I usually consider the source and make the decision to
not lower myself to their level. };-> Takes two to fight and if I
don't, makes my opponent look rather foolish as I walk away.

Alright you guys, go get a room!! :)

Just an aside, I was interested in becoming a boxing judge and wrote
to the boxing commission here in Ohio regarding what it took, how to
go about it etc. etc. Never got an answer. I guess they either don't
care or have enough.

I think you need a contact with someone who 'is in' with the state
commission. I have had a few discussions with a prominent promoter of
fights in Ohio. Bottom line; Its political. As it is with all state boxing
commisssions.

They would have referred you to amateur boxing for training.
If you're still interested, I can email you a contact. It's all
volunteer, you have to learn to time keep, and you'll start training
as a judge on the little kids.

Well now that we got most of the crooks (Taft, Blackwell) out of
Columbus, maybe I'll have a chance :)
