The temple shot looked a lot like the punch that knocked out Jones
against
Glen Johnson. This has to be the end for Jones. If it's not, I'll be
even sadder
for him than I already was ...
RJJ does need to retire. He hasn't had a meaningful fight in years. He has
never shown resiliency or the ability to come back and win after being
punished or hurt. It won't get any better at age 40.
I thought he'd win this one as he has shown a good ability at handpicking
opponents. Not so this time.
He had a good run. He made a lot of money. Time to retire.

What, no talking to the crowd with his hands down??????
Good! I'm glad he got his ass kicked.
Indeed. But Bernard Hopkins will be a completely different kettle of
fish for Danny Green, and I cannot see Green winning against a well-
prepared Executioner. The Hopkins that fought Antonio Tarver will
probably even KO/TKO Danny Green.

Battered Green? Green was in there for the whole twelve rounds and the
scores did not reflect a battering.
Come on, Walter, you can do beter than that.
Cherrio.

Mundine dominated that fight and was hardly touched. Sorry DCI. And I am
no real Mundine fan.
Jones got clipped on the temple with a good strong punch and it was
over. Nothing to learn about Green really : other than he was in against
a slow 40 year old who is known not to be able to take a punch.
Are you saying Hopkins is going to fight Green? I don't believe
that's in the works.
It makes sense in a way, but it won't happen. The truth of it is,
Jones vs. Hopkins is *still* a bigger money fight than Hopkins vs.
Green (and if Hopkins is to be believed, might still happen)
STRATEGY
Walter,
We disagree by a few degrees. I think your response was fair;
nonetheless, we disagree.
Regarding domiation and power:
As an aside story, my mother asked me to show her what a left hook was
and how do one throws it. So I carefully set her stance and hands. She
was 5'2" and I was 6'1½. Can you see a mental picture? So the height
matter was sort of funny as I look back some 65+ years ago. So I
proceeded to show her what little she needed to know. I dipped down
and told to rotate her upper body with her left hand/arm hooked. We
did several slow moves so that she could get "that feeling." And then
for the test. I placed my open hands against the sides of my face to
avoid any touch of a soon to be thrown "left hook" and told her to try
it.
There we were, mother and son in the kitchen, I'm crouched down, she
in her prepared stance. I waited and waited and waited. Soon I dropped
my hands to see what was going on. Wham! Her left hand hooked
beautifully and hit me on the high prt of my face, between the temple
and eyebrow.
Blood started squirting. She seemed stunned. I was taken aback and
asked her why she waited so long. Her answer was pure logic and still
brings a smile to across my face. She responded with the best answer,
"Your hand was in the way. You always told me that a fighter has to
keep his hands up." Now how in hell could that be any more that it
was.
She was one hell of a mother and "student."
As ever,
DCI
ps: against Mundine, Danny Green was never dominated and disheartened.
;)
Good post.
Personally I think if a boxer gets KO'd more than about 3 or 4 times in
his last 10 fights they should have their license examined after the
final KO. if their sight or speed is so hindered as to make them a
sitting duck then they shouldn't be allowed to put themselves, their
families and the sport at risk.
Much as I admired Jones in his prime he is well past it know. His last
semi impressive performance was beating Ruiz soundly.
Jones blew his ATG legacy by having failed to take on the best during
his reign (I know he fought Toney, but others were there that he
should have fought). He would probably have beaten all of them, but
instead he fought a bunch of tomato cans (i.e., mandatories) for the
most part. Now that he has this recent string of losses, people don't
remember him as being as great as it looked like he would become.
Had he faced and beaten all the top fighters of his day (or even lost
exciting fights occasionally), then late losses would have not done
much to tarnish his reputation. Everybody gets old.
We were told by Sam Rosen and Wally Matthews that Hopkins,
knowing Roy had been stopped in one, was still trying to talk
up a fight between them. That's a too-funny ha ha.
And, yes, there was only one Peter Pan all though that rancid
(vegan) anchovee, Jon Bon Jovi, refuses to age. Same with
Joe Paterno.

RJJ was'ent KO'd he was on his feet when the fight was stoped it was a

Does that then mean you think Roy Jones, Jr.,should keep on going up
against the punchers until there would be no need to count to 10? The
RSB regulars, the ones that call for safety and care of foighters,
should never voice their concerns? I think not. There is a time for
sll things.
DCI
Technically - yes. But look at the youtube reel with very open eyes.
Jones went down *hard* on his *face* *again* from a punch that did not
look all that damaging. And then was utterly unable to do anything
than suddenly hold his hands up high (which would have been a good
idea earlier on in the fight, instead of posijng as open as he did
thinking he still had the reflexes to duck out of harm's way).
The fact of the matter is that his opponent wasn't all that, and Jones
got legitimately stopped in the first round. And arguably the referee
let it go on too long. I mean - how much further does Jones have to
fall...?
Seems you one of those "fans" so filled with hostility that you size
upon any sport for relief.
DCI
For sure, you metaphor indicates his fall won't be much further.

++ I agree Mike... He had a Hall of Fame run and made a TON of
money... it's beyond time to retire!
:)
P
++ WHO??? wants to watch that fight now... I wasn't interested in
Jones-Hopkins II BEFORE Jones lost to Calzaghe... now... well... it's
just nonsensical... which means Pablo you are 100% correct... if the
financial projections are there, and there's any meaningful money on
the table AT ALL... that fight will happen, sadly!
Hopkins should either fight Dawson or RETIRE himself... he's not
fooling anyone...
P
++ Well said!
