This is a very good article. It confirms much of what I know about
the Philippines and the Filipino culture.
Now, I've got a question. The article states that when Efren was
young, he beat the #2 player in the Philippines. Now who was that?
And if someone says Jose Parica, I think I'll barf. If someone
decides to make me barf, then who was #1? The article implies that
Efren was *not* the #1 player at the time (16 yrs old?).
If i were you i'd grab the barf bag. I think it was jose...

Fine, then who was #1?

Fine, then who was the #2 guy that Efren beat (according to the
article). Again, the article implies that Efren was stll an
up-and-comer and *not* the #1 player.

Ok, here's the paragraph from that article:
"He started gambling at nine years old. At 12, several of his
rich Chinese friends, whom Efren met at the Lucky 13, tagged him along
to different places like Bulacan, Olongapo, and Angeles for vacations.
While there, they would pick up games. The friends would finance Efren
against some of the best players in the Philippines. Once he beat the
number two guy in the country. "
So, from the article, at 12 (not 16 sorry) he beats the number two guy
in the country. Who was number two? Who was number one? They can't
both be Jose Parica. One of them's got to be someone else. Who?
Efren doesn't become #1 in the country until he is 16. So it isn't
Efren. Who? Who? Who?
Okay, let's put it another way: In 1972, does anyone out there have a
clue as to who the top 5 players were in the Philippines? Does anyone
have a clue as to who was a top player back in 1972 that WASN'T Efren
Reyes or Jose Parica?
It's getting hot in here.
Why hasn't Bustamante's name come up in this discussion?
Pat Johnson
Chicago
Bustamante was not a top player in 1972. I'm sure he's even younger
than Efren, who was 12 in 1972. Besides, you wouldn't want me to barf
again, would you?
Bustamante is only 33 I think which would have made him about seven in 1972.
Bustamante learned from Efren.
John
Bagiou Boy
What do i win?
I asked around here in Manila and was told that the number 1 and 2
guys at that time (around 1960) were Jun Quiapo, who has retired from
playing and Ramon (Champion) Brobio who is now coaching the
national snooker and pocket teams.
It's not too well known how many great players there are around
these parts and almost every town with a population over 50,000
has 1 or 2 players potentially of world class. There are at least
5-6 guys here in Manila about at par with Bustamante and Luat.
Never leave the country because of visa problems maybe or
they like the action here too much.

That may be so in 1960. The original poster wants to know abut the early '70s
when Efren was an early teen. I asked around and was told that Bagiou Boy &
Parica were the great players back then. So i assume that Boy was the top
player beaten by the young Efren.

Although Mike Sigel is one of the greatest of all time, and "peaked"
from the mid 70's to the late 80's, he wasn't the number rated player
in the Philippines. Try again.

I assume "Jun" was short for Junior. Is this correct? If it is, any
idea what his given name is?

Thank you, Jon. Now I can die in peace. Can I assume that one of
these two players was the #2 player in the early 70's as well. Since
you are in the Philippines now, can you name one or more players that
we (Pinoy) in the States do not know?
