Questions for Efren

surprised that Efren was in town a week after picking up a half million
in Las Vegas. (Did they get paid?)
So, I asked him a few questions, following some recent threads here, and
in the "Enquiring minds want to know" spirit.
1. What kind of cue are you using?
I asked him three times, and I'll be damned if I could understand his
answer. It sounded like "A Judd and an Efren." He used a different cue
on the last day from the previous day, the first one had no points IIRC,
but some nice curly maple. The second one had some nice plain points
and decorative trim rings (from a distance). He broke with a Predator
break cue, as did many of the others.
2. What do you think of the slower cloth used at IPT. Is it easier or
harder to play on compared to faster tournament cloth?
He said something like "Who cares -- it's the same for me and my
opponent." Very Zen-like.
3. Which is harder: 8 ball or 9 ball?
Sorry Ed. He said that 9 ball is harder as you only have one ball to
shoot at, so it's easier to be hooked.
On the tournament, Efren won and picked up another US$10,000. He played
almost flawlessly. He missed two or three shots in a couple of sloppy
games, but was head-of-a-pin precise when potting and placing the cue
ball the rest of the time. He made a couple of shots I didn't see, and
would never make.
There were some good players present, and some good pool played. Most
of the names familiar to those not living in Asia did not do well. Chao
Fong-Pang went 2 and out. He never seems to do well here. Fransisco
Bustamante also went 2 and out, but apparently had been having little
sleep and lots of travel prior to the tourney. Two local boys made it
to the semis, where they played each other (Zulfikri and Ricky Yang --
Zulfikri is young and one we will be watching, and you may see him one
day too).

Thanks for thinking of us while talking to him. You should have asked him
which game he feels is his best and worst as we discussed this a bit a
while ago. Maybe next time.

No, althouth undoubtedly a nice guy, Efren is not particularly
interested in talking to strangers about his pool game. He may have
(correctly) figured I can't run three fookin balls to save my life, so
explaining things to me would be a bit like Ron Shephard explaining
vector calculus to a sociology major. I didn't want to push him, so
only took a minute or so of his time.
But, the best solution to your situation, IMO, is to not be there in the
first place...

How to approach a pro
I was going to tell you that, but I didn't, glad you figured it out on
your own and I am trying to hold my tounge more and stay out of you
amateur's opinions and your versions of how the game goes. When you
are a pro you get people constantly wanting a piece of your time, or
just to brag to their pals about their conversation and how you hung
out with a pro. Give them some time and then they want to play you a
game, and win or lose, you of course win 99.9% of the time, they are of
course going to tell all their pals they kicked your ass and not one of
their pals will believe them, even if they actually did. I handle it
this way, you want to play me, no problem, playing lessons are only
$100 an hour, hand me a C note and rack em up sausage. Playing with
you guys is like going to the denist. We don't wanna do it. When I do
appearances, I do a teaching clinic, then a trick shot show, then run a
9 ball tourney race to one, then I accept challenge matches. If I am
not being paid to play you, I do not want to waste my time on you. I
would rather practice alone.
Never come up to a pro and offer to gamble with him. Don't be a total
jerk. You know most stop gambling when they become top pros and their
sponsors actually forbid it.
No way you will win, so take the money you were prepared to toss away
and get nothing back from it other than bragging rights I played with
Mr. Big and book a playing lesson with the guy and actually learn
something.
I have bozos come up to me and want to gamble for 3 dimes, flash a wad
with all singles with a c note out side. Every time I have called
their bluff, they cut and run. All they wanted to do was back down a
pro, feel like Mr. Big shot and run the pros name down with their
trailor court trash pals. I repeat, do not be a jerk, if you want to
gamble, then go find a dive, go find gamblers. Do not insult any
touring pro like that.
There have been places I used to play at this got so bad with people
asking questions and bothering me constantly I had to either leave or
just cut them off saying, sorry I am in practice, when you see me away
from the table, come over and we can talk then. When I am at the
table, I am working, do not disturb. It pissed a lot of people off,
but that was the intent. Do not bother a pro in practice, wait till he
takes a break and then ask, may I ask you this or that, do you have a
moment, be polite?
Varner used to handle it this way, you said, Nick, how do you do this,
he say, how do you, you tell him, he say, that's the way I do it.
Blows you off quick and he does not have to engage brain or wake up and
spit out his 19 pieces of juicy fruit to talk. Most pro players are
like most room owners, they only want to give you 30 seconds, push it
to 45 and you will notice, both, begin to figit, their eyes dart around
the room and they plan their escape and move trying to get away from
you. Push it to 60 and they will turn and just walk off.
Never shake their hand, and or if you do, don't put some bubba death
grip on them to show what a big strong man you are. Most pros do not
work in a ditch with a shovel like you do so you are stronger than they
are and they know it so you dont have to prove it to them. I do not
like to shake hands, I bow instead to you.
Do not invade their body space. Most have twice, 3 times the body
space of a normal person which is 2 to 3' and because of their inverted
way they grew up in a pool hall most have been isolated and are by
nature, anti social so stand back and talk. I do not let any one get
within 3' of me. Do not get in their face. When you break the pane of
a persons body space, it makes them nervous. Criminals can have a body
space of up to 10'.
If you ask for an autograph then have a pen and paper ready. If he
wants to charge you, then you have a world class ass hole standing in
front of you and you should turn and walk off.
Don't ask for free advice or how to do this or that. If you have
questions, book a lesson with the guy, don't be cheap. Just be brief,
tell the guy what a fan you are, that makes you both feel good. The
bigger the star, the more demands on him, the less time he has for the
rail birds. If you want to chat about pool, then go into
www.poolchat.net and do it or talk to the lessor ranked pros as they
will enjoy the attention as most fans just ignore them.

He's a pool player Ed. If he thinks (bah!) that 9-ball is the harder
game, then he will obviously say that THAT is his best game.

That's the point. I have read an interview (discussed this last month I
think) where Reyes stated unequivocally that 9 ball was his worst game. He
didn't say what his best game was.

Yes, rotation is the hardest game, which is why my world record of 4
racks, 60 balls has only been tied by Efren. That is how hard that
game is.

There are three kinds of people here on RSB, those that care to read
what Larry writes, those that don't care and Larry himself. Only one
