He needs hate and conflict, he feeds on it. He in short, and think of
him like this, is a vampire who must feed on your blood. He feeds on
your hate. You only get rid of him, by strarving him of hate. If he
can't feed, he goes to a new hunting ground and stris it up there. The
more the board calms down, the more polite every one becomes, the more
respect we all begin to show to one another, the more he will panic and

Why I Have Stopped Participating In Internet Forums
July 18,2005
First of all, I would like to point out that I am not slamming anybody
personally while writing this. If you fit the description of what I am
going to write about here and you feel it might upset you, stop reading
now. This was something that has been upsetting me for quite some time.
There is not an individual instance that has caused me to make this
decision. It is a combination of several issues, some of which I will
keep private.
As far as the internet forums go, I have been around them longer than
most, and I believe I have been around long enough to know a little bit
about this subject. As far as comments about not having a thick skin,
if you think I don't than you don't know me very well. Also, think what
you want - its none of my business. I'm a pool player, not a debater.
My decision to stop my participation is based on the fact that I
believe that the forums have far outlived their usefulness. To
understand why I say that, you must know my history with the internet
forums. When I first started posting my instructional articles on the
internet, I did so through the newsgroup rec.sport.billiard (RSB). At
the time, there was a group that posted there that was very positive,
energetic, and happy to talk about the game of pool. My articles weere
posted there for free for whomever could use them. I would get some
feedback on the material, some book inquiries, an occasional spelling
or grammar correction, but nothing out of line. There was respect.
As time passed, and more and more people had access to the internet, we
began to see a change in the population on RSB. We began to see a
change in the attitudes of some of the newer people. The more the
internet grew and expanded, so did our range of topics, and so did the
participants. If I posted an instructional article (for free) I would
also - free of charge - get my articles broken down, re-edited,
critiqued, torn apart, misquoted, trampled upon, and deemed as SPAM.
This puzzled me, as my intent was to freely pass along my knowledge of
the game to players that might benefit from it. I wasn't charging for
the information, and I did not understand the negativity towards me at
all. Nonetheless, I was baited into battles with trolls, accused of
horrible things that were dug up from my past, but I still trudged on
trying to carry a positive message through my words. I adopted a policy
where if I posted my articles, I would not respond to the critiques or
criticism. I felt that this was best. The internet was still growing,
and with that growth came more forums, more newsgroups, etc.
Some came and went. Some forums decided that the message boards needed
to be moderated. That seemed to cause problems as some people with
extreme attitudes and words started being banned from sites such as
Billiards Digest CCB and AzBilliards. We know some of the names, none
of which I will mention here, we know who they are and the trouble they
caused. The moderated boards seemed to work. Some liked them - some
didn't like them. Still as time went on, the flame wars got worse.
Professional players would be torn to shreds for stating their honest
opinions. Woofing started to become commonplace. Some people got away
with more than others. People like myself refused to participate in the
flame wars. My stance was this: most of these people hid behind the
anonymity of an alias on the internet. After all, its just words on a
screen. Some people are dumber than others and some of them post in the
forums. Oh well. My participation started to dwindle. It wasn't fun
anymore.
This brings me to 2005. Earlier this year I stopped my participation on
two forums that had removed my posts because I had attached a link to
this web site and I sell my books through this web site. This really
got under my skin because I had placed a banner advertising one of
these forum sites on my web site - on the homepage. The fact of the
matter is that I don't sell as many books as many think - I really
don't. So why this is considered a commercial site is beyond my
comprehension. Anyway, I stopped particpating in those forums earlier
this year.
I was mainly posting on EasyPoolTutor, and AzBilliards. Mostly
AzBilliards. AzBilliards is a very well run site, Mike Howerton has
done a great job over the years buidling that site into the best
billiard related web site on the internet (in my opinion). But.....
The forum has lost its usefulness. To me, it is not my idea of an
exchange in ideas, it has turned into
a) a pissing contest waiting to happen
b) a breeding ground for negativity
I choose to not be a part of that in any way, I don't wish to be
associated with that in any way. People that have met me know that I
try to remain positive, uplifting, and encouraging to other people.
Quite frankly I don't have time for negativity in my ears, in anything
I read, or in my life. I just don't have the need for it. On just about
every forum there is bickering, trash talking, flaming, trolling, etc.
Look at RSB these days. It's not pretty. Fast Larry, you are a friend
of mine, but with every post you make to RSB, you make an ass out of
yourself and the entire billiard industry. Thank you for ruining
something that a lot of people held dear to our hearts. I long for the
days of waking up and logging on the internet to read a post by my dear
friend, the late Jim Meador. I would either laugh, cry, or do both in
the same post. You are not the only culprit in the death of that
newsgroup, Larry. There are others who have nothing positive to add to
any conversation, just gripes, criticisms, and condescending words.
That is not communication. Along with the attached e-mail I sent you
Larry, I am now officially distancing myself from your website. From
one friend to another, I once again ask you to stop what you are doing.
Today (07-18-05) I went to AzBilliards and saw an anonymous person
write some very disrespectful things about a true legend in the game of
pool. It was basically someone wanting to stir the pot on an issue that
had already been settled. I saw the post and I believed that it would
have been removed in an moderated forum. As the day went on, the post
remained. People responded to it. It was never removed. It remained to
draw attention to it - and like a fly drawn to a tird - everybody got
to see it. It was typical of what that forum has become lately. Laced
with foul language, sexual references, posts being drawn off topic for
personal attacks, and for some odd reason, the absence of a moderator.
My participation started to decline to a point where I very rarely
visited the forum at all because it very rarely provided anything
insightful. My decision to cease my participation is long overdue. To
me, it is no longer a billiard forum. It is more like an out of control
tag board. Threads are drawn off topic constantly and half the time I
don't open them up anymore to see what they are about.
Above all else, the forums are doing nothing to build up the image of
the game of the game of pool. As a professional pool player I try to
conduct myself in a professional manner both in and out of public. The
same guy you read (past tense) in the forums is the same guy you will
talk to on the phone and meet in person. I am passionate about having
our sport grow. I am also passionate about expanding the exposure of
the game of pool in the media by showing the positive side of our game.
A look at the recent war in the Tournaments section at AzBilliards will
show you why nobody wants to sponsor our tournaments on any level. We
air our dirty laundry out for all to see. We put our personal feelings
ahead of good business sense and shoot ourselves in the butt - every
time.
I will continue to take advantage of every opportunity to positively
promote the game of pool. I just feel that at this point in time there
is very little that is positive in these forums. I choose not to be a
part of it, that may change at some point in the future, but not any
time soon. For my friends in the forums, drop me an e-mail or a phone
call and stay in touch.

You posted lies on pool chat, came in and did that on your first post,
then signed black jacks name at the bottom, which got you baned and
earased at once. Dont you get it, geez, you are busted and exposed
dude. Hello McFly, knock knock.....
its the same yappin wolf bull she-yit, over and over, set up, lies,
slanders, what's new, yeah, I am hip, I fookin get it, now get the fook
outta here, maggot, the rest of you, drop and give me 20.

We can trace you to your front door and address and phone number. CCB
does the same thing, which means simply, watch yo ass bubba. So
remember when you do and are polite, this is not a problem and is
confidential. We do not display your cpu ip when you post as does ccb.
If you are a bad boy, we may tell the world about you.
On any board on earth, if you come in like you did, on your first post
and post an attack on the owner, and or board pro, and sign another
persons name to this, you ass is banned every fookin single time by
every one, now do you get that, fooker, now you are dismissed. We have
zero tolerance for first time posters, until they establish them
selves, contributate to the board, then and only then, are they allowed
to complain and question anything. If any member wants to question
this, post his statement, they can and that shall be allowed and
explained to them. You were not a member, you were a hostile invader
who was driven off, so stop boo hooing on this to these fookin maggots
here.
We do not go ban happy on www.poolchat.net like howie of AZ does. He
is a dictator, we allow free speech. He does not. In the last 2 years
this board has been up, we have banned 4 people and every one has been
from here, Debra, Eric da Ferry, you know the ones. I've seen Howie
ban 4 a day on az.
Who's the next fraud and phony, to post the next round of lies and
slanders, this place is about as intelligent and a fookin soup kitchen.
> 6 months ago, Grady said on RSB, you all can go fuck your self's, left

This is my one and only reply to you before you
go into plonk-ville where your cheap trailer-park
act belongs.
Grady has not been back because he, in direct
contradistinction to you, is a man of his word.
A real man, in other words. You, on the other
hand, say things all the time that you think you
mean, but like a child, your words have no
weight. You said yesterday that you were
leaving this forum. But of course, you words
are meaningless, as always. You are the
biggest blemish on the game of pool. You
should be ashamed of yourself, but shame is
an adult emotion. You are a sad little boy.
I won't see your response to this - you are out
of my mind and life forever, Larry Grindinger.
But I want you to think about something, insofar
as you think at all. The world of serious pool
is a small one. You have succeeded in totally
ruining and destroying your reputation, such as
it was before you came here. Word of mouth
travels fast, and you can go to sleep at night
knowing that, if your name comes up at all,
it is spoken of in the most disparaging and
mocking terms possible. You are now a joke.
And I will do everything I can, should your name
ever come up (which is exceedingly unlikely),
to let people know that under NO circumstances
are you to be trusted, played, or even spoken to.
Goodbye little Larry Grindinger. You are not
a man at all. Real men keep their word and
mean what they say. You are a LOSER.
And you always will be. And the entire
pool world knows it's true.

Reason Blackjack Has Left The Building
(2005/7/20 10:09:45)
Reason Blackjack Has Disowned Larry
Black jack has not disowned Larry, he was on the phone with me
yesterday and he is still on my web site with his permission and a part
of my pool school. He disowned RSB and every chat site, because of
dumb fooks like you that you can not deal with any more.
This was not a effort to post news, it was a clear attack. Newbies do
not use my board as a platform to attack me, sorry. That is what RSB
is for, remember, the board you all wiped out using as a platform to
attack me on. An gee, now that there are only 12 people left, when I
leave, 12 of you are now talking to each other, and 12 people are now,
only reading your boo hoooing. See, like I said, I fookin won, there
is the evidence of that. Now shut the fook up, go get a life and learn
to live with this defeat. Dude, she-yit happens. tee hee hee, have a
nice day, bozos. Now run over to denobenos ferrybozo board and cry on
his shoulder about mean old me. Poor baby, here is a virtual hug...
You are truly a unique person, I gotta tell ya.
Why dont you just shut the fook up and fook off turkey. Thank you for
bowing to da King, but that is no longer me, I gave that up and title
to your new king of da bozos, benodeno, hail to da new king, ah yes,
its good to be king. Hail yes. king deno....Now go over to the new
denobenoferrybozoboard and boo hoo on his shoulder while he fondles
your nuts. It will feel so good. You are dismissed maggot, the rest of
you ferries, drop and give me 20.

George,
It is impossible to reason with this guy. You`re wasteing your time
with these posts. Just plonk him like the rest of us have and you`ll
never know he`s here. Hope this helps.
George C. <----has seen the light
Note FL proved such a site can be put up, exist and survive, as he
designed it, owns and runs it. He also proved he can post on a site
for 2 years and be accepted and be totally polite to everyone. Nobody
knew this was his site until just recently he came out of the closet
and revealed this. When he did, two of his board pros, Black Jack and
Grady came under vicious attack by Howie of AZ using false names he
made up. Howie does not want competition from FL it seems and somebody
with a vested financial interest is behind a lot of these attacks now
on FL, OH, WE WONDER WHO THIS IS??????
Just read all the posts from the last two years to see this one clear
fact, the forum is small with only 350 members and all of them are for
real and can be proven if any one wants to bet some serious cash on
this, and this board does not compete with az/ccb, now the same board
owned and ran by billiards digest. Howie was bought out and now admins
and bans you on both boards.
Pool chat seeks a different clientel and therefore will always have a
smaller membership. In pool, really nice people with educations shall
always be in the minority. In any thing, it is never about numbers,
these other sites have numbers and are now infested and dying from the
bad apples in their barrels they can not control. It is all about the
quality of those numbers and to have numbers and quality side by side
can not be done. Numbers, az, quality, www.poolchat.net
Ferries, ccb. the pool scum of the earth, rsb, that about wraps up
this chat site lesson for today, OK< you maggots are now dismissed,
first, drop and give me 20. Geeze, I gotta explain everything to dees
bozos, Rachet is sittin dare scratchin his head going whatta did he
say??????

State of the AzB forums
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It has come to my attention recently that the forums are starting to
get out of control. Users are stepping on other users and claims are
being made. So I guess it is time to address these claims and bring
things back under control.
A couple of users have been posting some things lately that other users
would like to see these people banned for. I did ban one of them for 7
days in an effort to allow his controversy to cool down. I would like
everyone to understand that the last thing I want to do is ban anyone
from these forums. These forums have grown beyond what I ever thought
they would and I am very proud of the broad spectrum of users on the
forums. I try to make this a place that anyone can participate without
the usual high school antics of name calling and crap that people like
to do from the privacy of their basements.
Any time I do finally get fed up and ban someone, I get a flood of PMs
either thanking me or questioning my decision. These PMs usually come
from forum members that I consider friends and who I respect their
opinions greatly. For me to ban someone, I usually have to see messages
that are way over the line. Even then, I try to warn the person that
they are getting out of control.
I have seen some questionable posts lately but not anything that I
thought was bannable. On the other hand, I don't read every thread
here. I read posts that interest me and posts that people send me PMs
asking me to look at. On an average weekday, there are 600 posts made
to the forums. I certainly don't have time to read each and every one.
On the subject of time, there have been claims recently that I am
posting on my forums under a number of different aliases in order to
stip up trouble. Even if I were the type of person to do something like
this, I would like to know when I had the time to do so. For the past
couple weeks I have been working on a major addition to the site. At
the same time I have been busy with other jobs that I have.
Just to clear things up for everyone, AzB is not all that I do. (Boy, I
wish) I am the webmaster for Luby Publishing. That means that I
maintain the Billiards Digest site as well as the sites for the other
mags they have. I also am partners in a consulting business (RMH Web
Consulting) where I have my share of clients to take care of. I also
run a local billiards newspaper (The Arizona Billiard News) which
prints 28 pages once a month. Not to mention that I usually have 2 kids
at home to deal with (haven't had them this summer though). With all of
that, I am not sure when I am supposed to have the time to make up
aliases and chat with myself on the forums using those aliases.
I have also heard claims from one of the regular users here (who I
always considering as someone who had a good head on his shoulders and
wanted to truly see the game move forward) that not only do I post this
crap under different names but that he sent me a PM requesting that I
ban one of the users because of a post they made. I double-checked my
PMs and have not heard from this user in well over a month. So if he
thinks he PMed me, he didn't. What is interesting though, is that this
user got mad at me a few months ago because I banned someone he didn't
think deserved to be banned. Now I guess he is not posting here because
I didn't ban someone he thinks deserves to be banned.
As for what to do about this whole situation, I guess I need to "Put
the I back into moderator" and start cleaning out some of the crap
here. I really didn't want to have to start monitoring everything and
hoped that we could all behave as adults. I guess every once in a while
this sort of thing has to happen though.
I am also going to invite certain users to be part of a committee that
will be in charge of deciding when and if someone needs to be banned.
Please don't PM me asking to be part of the committee. I will send out
notes to the people who I think should be part of it.
Mike

I agree with you on almost every point except one. That one being that
you should not have to get on your own site and defend yourself.I dont
know maybe you are more tolerant then me but if I was running this site
and someone started telling me this and that, that person would be gone
without any explanation.
"Its your site" do any thing you want to do.I cant believe people have
the nerve to tell you how to run it.Let those start their own site.
Just my 02.cents worth.

Mike, firstly congratulations on the job you have done in the past and
in advance for your future efforts. I personally think you have done an
excellent job as moderator.
I was amazed to find you are the Billiards Digest webmaster, as I
consider this site to be their primary competition, especially with
Inside Pool in disarray, and I am amazed they would allow you to do
both. It has always appeared to me that the Billiards Digest managment
have no idea the power and scope of the Internet, but I'm sure you
probably cannot comment on this, unless you are going to tell us AZB
and CCB are getting merged next week!
The main issue I have with posts here is usually offensive language
which seems to have gotten very bad recently, and it is worth noting
there are no parental controls or "Adult content" warnings on this
site. My feeling is this should be tightly reined in, but that is just
my opinion. FWIW I have only bothered using the "Bad Post alert" button
once in the last 2 years.

Ok, that is a great real-world description. But do you really think he
would operate his forum like this? When someone metions first
amendment, they probably mean they want a forum modeled after a
democratic government. If Mike "Mussolini Man" were to moderate the way
you describe, I would definitely not be allowed here and your
"nine-ball" poems would be banned. People should be allowed to speak
freely as long as they don't cross the line, and that line is up to
Mike to decide. This is a dictatorship, isn't it?

The biggest difference between BD and this site is that they decide
what happens over there. I don't ban anyone without running it by them
first. (Well, except for a certain Fast one who I was instructed to ban
anytime he pops up over there)
They are primarily in the magazine business and they are very good at
what they do. They don't really see me as competition since I don't do
a mag and I don't see them as competition in the web side of things.
You will even see one of the sites using one of the other's stories on
occasion.
Mike
And because you're the watchdog for some other bullshit forum that
qualifies you to do it here? Based on the way Mawissa throws around
sexual innuendos toward her girl "friends"...it goes a little beyond
normal friendship.
And if you're a candidate, or are one of her "special" friends...it has
a lot to do with this board.
Whether I say it or not, but found out that YOU were a moderator on
here...it would be a matter of milliseconds before I'd go bye-bye from
this forum. You don't even know beans about pool, or, have ever
contributed one damn thing on the subject. You're actually quite
worthless.
Silly? NO....RIDICULOUS!!
Seems like the best way to stay out of the banned for life category is
not to bash any of the sponsors that help pay the bills. Besides that,
any name calling, over use of profanity, sexual comments that 12 year
olds can read, and liable from one member to another goes.

I think you failed at that. This is a pretty good site, but I
definitely see shades of high school here (god, was I ever that
young?). I'm sure PM's have a life of their own we don't see, like
passing notes in high school. "Oh did you see what so-and-so said? What
a jerk.", etc., etc. Cliques form too just like high school. Nothing
you can do about it Mike, that's the way of life.
I find ccb to have the same atmosphere. RSB BL (Before Larry) on the
other hand was more like a barroom, friendly discussion back and forth
with some occassional woofing and ribbing until suddenly a donnybrook
breaks out, but there are no cops to come break it up. Post Fast Larry,
RSB has turned into a piece of crap and it is a very sad thing because
frankly I prefer the free-form, politically incorrect atmosphere of RSB
BL.
The downside of something like RSB (besides what Larry has done to it)
is that you very seldom get participation from certain groups. I
remember when Bill Stephen first tried RSB. That experience turned him
off on the net as a whole.

Hear, hear! Although I'm not a very big RSB fan, I am saddened to see
it in such a state, the repetition of nonsensical posting for the sole
benefit of -- WHAT?
The NewsGroup has been in existence for some time, and based on what I
have read in the past, there is/was a strong base of regulars who enjoy
the comradery of a few kindred souls with much in common.
Although it hasn't been updated in a long while, here's a link to the
"good old days" of RSB NG, complete with a Rogues Gallery:
http://www.playpool.com/rsbasp/rsbrogue/rogues.htm
Ironically, if you click on the Return to Playpool.com Button at the
top, you will soon be greeted with a message from its webmaster: Due to
the inappropriate messages, the message board has been removed from the
site. I will look into getting a new board that requires a login.
Whatever happened to Playpool.com, it seems RSB has endured the same.
There's your unmoderated forum.

One thing that Larry has done with his take-over of RSB is drive some
of the regulars over here. Can't complain too much about that.
