So how do the trick shot artists get the balls to stack?

I have seen a lot of trick shots performed where balls
are stacked on top of each other. Do they flatten the
balls at the points of contact?

Basically, yes. Bob Byrne shows a way to do it with a drill bit making a
small indentation on the ball inside the number so it isn't really
noticeable.

Not necessary. Try a few grains of salt at the contact point.

You mean the three hours I tried to get the balls to stand
on top of each other were wasted?!?!

We did it by milling off about .001". Works well, and is hardly noticable.
You can actually even use the ball (a good player will notice, though) in a
game.
