Typically, I wander out to the poolroom and make a few balls, miss a few.
This morning was different.

I could "see" every shot. I never missed in 3 racks of 9-ball.

This got me thinking. (Yeah, DANGEROUS, I know). Is there some way this
mental process can be "sharpened" at will?

Its happened to all of us but we are just as confused as you are. Its
called catching a stroke. It often happens after you change one thing about
what you are doing. The tendency is to think the one thing you changed has
improved your game dramatically but more likely its because while you are
focused on that one thing, you subconsciously are changing other things. I
don't really know how to make it last. Hate to say it but you will probably
be back to "normal" (for you) in a week or less.

There definitely is help for you in that regard. Obtain and read
"Pleasures of Small Motions: Mastering the mental game of pocket
billiards."

Amazon has the latest paperback edition which has been expanded by 50
percent, for $9.15 New, plus shipping. Not a lightning-fast read, but
it's only 140 pages with plenty of useful insights and sound
principles that can't fail to "sharpen this mental process" for you.
Be sure to read the dozens of quite favorable reviews towards the
bottom of this webpage:

http://www.amazon.com/Pleasures-Small-Motions-Mastering-Billiards/dp/1585745391

When anyone raises the question of "mental process" they're
automatically in the arena of psychology, so it only makes common
sense to hear what an experienced and respected sports psychologist
(who is also a fellow pool addict) has to tell you in his step-by-step
guidance.

This is a far more systematic and practical, real-life approach to
pool's mental game than the various off-putting methods that involve
mantras or hypnosis or radical attempts at personality changes.

Hey Nat, it is good to see you posting here again.

The only thing I know that helps for me is to play regularly. This
sort of thing seems to happen more often for me when I'm playing
regularly then otherwise. But I don't know how to just turn it on
and off.

Generally, you should enjoy it when it lasts. And, don't despair
when it goes away, it will be back.

I've heard good players talk about getting in stroke like this for
weeks at a time. They can go on the road, or play in a series of
tournaments, and they claim to not miss a single shot
unintentionally during that time. Then, just like everyone else,
they slip out of it and they are back to normal.

Also, when this happens it is a good time to work on some of your
difficult shots. Having problems seeing a particular kind of bank
shot? Maybe now is the time to work on it. How about long thin cut
shots? Or combination shots (which is what I'm working on these
days)? Sometimes you can get a shot to click when you are in stroke
like this, and then after you are back to normal you realize that
you can still make that shot. So you can manage to bump up your
game a little in a permanent way.

It's funny, some days I also "see" (not an issue of visual acuity) the
shot better than on others. I've come to the conclusion that a big (but
not all) of this is tied to achieving a particular head alignment,
height and relationship to the cue ball.

So I guess I'm saying it's not a mental thing, more of a head and eyes
positional thing.

I spec so. I'm reading Capelle's "A Mind For Pool". It covers a LOT of
bases!

A lot of it is hard todefine clearly. some years ago I used to play
regularly with a very good local player. when I realized how he rarely
missed a cross-side bank I asked him how he lined them up. His rely baffled
me; " I can see them."

Well, today I see a lot of shots, and when I'm in-stroke I can make
them...even though I overdue for new glasses.

Ahh Old Nat is just talking about a poster that most of us have
filtered. I told him to just activate a few filters and RSB would be
good again.

Well that's what I suspected but he had culled the 'replied to' post so
thoroughly that I wasn't sure. Thanks Pat.
