Ok, I'll add another one. A little help woud be appreciated tho. :-)

Scene......
This happened at the Imperial Hotel and Casino in Biloxi Mississippi.
I didn't use the abbreviation for Mississippi because the spelling was
drilled into me in grade school and i wanted to type it. :-)

I was on a pool team that was part of some national league. I can't
remember if it was called the NPL, APL or what, it wasn't APA or
Valley. There were teams from across the nation. I remember teams from
Texas and New Jersey.

Story.....
My wife went with me but she wasn't on a team. The league operator
came up to me and said they were having a Jack and Jill tournament and
wanted to know if my wife and I wanted to enter. I informed him that
my wife wasn't a member of the league. He said as long as I don't say
anything he won't.

I thought this may be ok since my wife is just sitting there and
looking kinda bored. Besides, the entry fee was only about $40. I was
also bored waiting on our teams next match. What could it hurt? My
wife isn't all that good, so if she gets to play a couple games, she
will be happy and I look like a nice guy. :-)

I went to the registration desk and signed us up. We started out and
barely squeeked thru our first couple games. I thought that this was
great since she will get to shoot more than 4 games total. We won our
next 2 games and I was starting to worry they would find out that my
wife wasn't a member since I knew many of the players that were in my
local league.

I thought about throwing the next 2 games, besides, we got our monies
worth. For some reason I couldn't bring myself to throw any games.
Surely we'll lose the next 2 games because there are some really good
shooters here. Well, that didn't happen and all of a sudden we were
sitting in the money, but in the losers bracket.

A game or 2 later we find ourselves winning the losers bracket which
put us in a sure 2nd. This was the point of no return. We had to beat
the other team twice. We played our asses off. The guy on the other
team played me a great locked tight safety and I wasn't able to hit my
final ball before the 8. This gave his lady friend Ball-in-hand. She
got out and beat us and took home the first place money.

My wife and I both recieved trophies and second place money. I think
it was about $400 plus or minus.

I tell this story to show how much "behind the scenes" BS goes on in
these leagues.

You should feel dirty -- you scammed a cue from Pechauer after all.

Great story Hank.

I'm watching the state finals in Wheeling WV circa 1983 and Willie is
there to do an exhibition and referree the finals. Well it's getting past
Willie bedtime because the tournament is dragging along and so he offers
to let all comers take him on in 9 ball (it was a 9ball tourney) for $10
-- money to go to charity (the Willie pension fund?).

So I pays my money, and break (everyone gets spotted the break). I make
the 7 ball but have no shot on the one so I play Willie safe! You would
have thought I did the unthinkable -- Willie makes a big show of me
playing HIM safe. And just to teach me a lesson he safes me back putting
whitey behind about 5 balls. I'm literally surrounded by object balls.
BUT I'd been jumping balls for years then and he didn't leave me against
anything so I pop over the interfering balls and make a good hit on the
one. Naturally it stopped where Willie could get a shot, and he starts
knocking balls in. Well I had my moment of fame and I'm happy just to
watch him run them -- but he jaws the 6 ball on the new felt and I'm back
up. I make the 6 but miss my angle for the 8 a little and when shoot it
the cue ball rolls toward the middle of the table. The nine is about 2
inches off the head rail so I grab the rake. Lay the cue on it an slow
roll the bank into the opposite corner. As it's rolling there, Willie's
exclaiming, "it's gonna go, it's gonna go!" And it did. Never been
happier in my pool life than that one moment.

I posted a link to the picture last week but since you know the nature of
my sh$t-eating grin now, I'll post it again.
http://mccauleyweb.com/willienme.htm

The guy that owns the local pool hall here (and won that table as part of
the prize for the tourney) beat Willie by breaking and running out.
Willie intentionally (obvious to everyone, including his opponent) dogged
the 8 ball against his only female challenger. She was so pissed that she
missed her shape by 3 feet (it was a dink-dink out) and had a razor cut
along the rail on the nine to beat him. She made the shot (a damn nice
shot I'll add) and won her game. I think many of us wondered
(marvelled) at her attitude. We all saw it as Willie being a gentleman
and letting her win -- but she was a competitor and saw it as insulting.
I wonder what she thinks now...

Those were the only 3 wins that night against the champ.

Damn it Mark! How is anybody suppose to compete with a story about
beating Mosconi? :-)

Since maybe you can remember better than I can, did I win the litlle
RSB tournament in Columbus once? If I did, I guess I beat the man who
beat Mosconi. LOL

There you go again Hank (do I sound like Reagan in the debates?). You
LOST to me in the finals pal (I even remember the shot I made on that
tight table to close you out -- cue ball almost in the jaws with 6 feet to
the OB slightly off angle [my toughest shot to 'see' in fact]). Google
the RSB archives if it helps you remember how you lost. No disgrace of
course -- after I beat Willie EVERY time we played...

I still have the grand prize deluxe 5 piece cue and case I won to prove
it! (And the RSB archives).

BTW what was the name of the guy that ran the tourney? He stopped posting
looong ago. Stocky guy, fairly tall, fun personality...

--> Mark0 <-- lots and lots of people beat the guy that beat Mosconi.

ROFLMAO............Are you sure? ...........Ok, just joking.

I do remember the 5 piece cue. Came with a nice case too! I would bet
you still have that cue hanging on your wall as a throphy of beating
ME out of first place. :-)

I don't remember who ran it. Probably Tom Simpson. I think Tom went on
to become a cerified BCA master instructor.

No it wasn't old "Elephant Balls." Someone started talking to him during
my match and I had to keep letting him know when it was his shot. When I
beat him I had to go tell him THAT too. He acted surprised he lost to
boot!

No it was a regular RSP ASP-er. Came to me just now (old age is like
that) Jim Wyant -- tho I don't remember his usenet handle anymore.

Hey I'm gonna be around your neck of the woods next Tuesday (1/17) late
morning (gotta drive a co-worker to CMH for a noon flight). You wanna hit
some balls around for a while for old times sake?

Ok, maybe it was Jim Wyatt. I remember him. He talked a LOT! I think
he was surprised everytime he got beat, but no one else was. :-)

Sure! I'll knock some around. I have no plans for that time. Call me
and I'll give you directions that same morning. OK?

Yes. Jim Wyatt (I know a Joel Wyant hence my confusion). But it was
Simpson that was busily chatting while trying to play pool.

Well you have a few days to limber up but you won't need it. My table has
the cover and an HO railroad on it for my 9 yr old's enjoyment. Been over
a month since it was even uncovered (and even then I never hit more than a
handful of balls around). You surely will be able to say you whooped me
this time. Surely. Hell even Ratchet beat me (some).

I'll call you when I get close.

Wonder if Jerry Pechauer is looking in... :-)

Rachet beat you? Really? ROFLMAO

I don't think JP would want to donate to 2 guys who keep saying the
other guy will win. :-)

I did play a race to 7 in 9ball and a race to 7 in 8 ball a couple
months ago. I lost the 9 ball race and won the 8 ball race. I don't
see me getting in any practice before you get here.
