(It certainly wasn't due to skill -- I lost most of the other games
that night.)
Of course this is an average across mutiple matches on multiple tables.
On any single table patterns can develop, sometimes due to the way the
balls lay and sometimes due to consistent racking structure patterns by
the racker themselves.
For example some people only pay attention to how tight the top 3 balls
in the rack are. If the bottom 3 balls are loose this seems to increase
the likelihood of making the 9-ball into a corner pocket, all other
factors being equal.

Since Oct., I've gotten 4 9 balls on the break.

Personally, given the a tight rack, I believe it's all luck. But the
answer to this question all depends on who you ask. One of the better
players in my pool-hall swears there is a technique to it in 8-ball at
least.

Have you broken 4 times, or 4,000 times since October?

Well. lets figure this one out....the league runs 16 weeks once a
week.....so that would be a total of 16 nine ball matches in a session....
I've played for 2 sessions, so thats 32 matches of nine ball......or 5 or 6
racks of nine ball a week.... so 6 racks times 16 weeks is what? about 96
games of nine ball....lets call it an even hundred..... so that would be
about one patch about every 25 games or so......
I guess to answer the original question, I don't know any percentage of
games won on the break. I was just merely stating what my experience would
be with nine ball on the break.....I don't even know if thats good or
not...but I am sure there are alot of guys that have done it more often.
Hope this helps...

I have seen this 8 on the break technique work well in the Fort
Lauderdale TAP league. Breaking off the left rail with somewhat low
outside(in this case, left) sometimes pots the 8 in the right side
picket. They aim at the ball to the left of the head ball. I tried,
unsuccessfully. But I saw others who showed me how, and made it. Its
certainly not easy, but its a technique that can be learned with
practice. They claim to make it in one out of every 20 games, but I am
talking the best 2 players in the house, strong TAP 6's, APA 7's.

I don't use the side break much because people seem to foul more often
than make the 8. One time though, my league team was in the playoffs,
and we made the 8 on the break 3 times in a row, 3 different players. I
was the fourth one up and naturally I'm breaking from exactly the same
place. Of course, I not only didn't make the 8, I put at least two
other players in grave danger as whitey came flying off the table almost
at break speed. Still, it is rare the 8 falls on the break, regardless
of technique or speed. 3 times in a row by 3 different players was special.
