(*<~ We've discussed this in RSB before along with drinking and
playing,so excuse my bringing it up again. Also, I may spell some of the
words incorrectly.
Back in the 60s,70s and early 80s I was a pill popping fool, especially
speed (diet pills). I took Desoxyn,Preluden and the 'real' Black Mollys
like they were candy.I know for a fact that nearly All of the players in
my area that were hard core gamblers and/or poolplayers also used these
pills. We would take a few pills and go out and shot & gamble for 3-4
days straight. I shot much better pool then (when my 'mixture' was
right) than I do now (or for the past 15 years). I stopped smoking and
doing drugs in 1985.
I know that it's almost impossible to get the amphetemines from years
ago and that they are now making synthetic diet pills of phentermine
(ie, Fasten,ionomen,Adipex,etc.). My doctor has told me that I need to
lose some weight (about a 'jockey' or 100lbs.) and he has given me some
phentermine to take. I've only taken a couple so far and I've noticed
that once again my game has improved.I'm firing the balls in the hole
and beating league players that have always beat me.These pills make my
mouth dry and consequently I desire BEER. I'm starting to work on my
'new proper mixture' now. Of course I haven't lost any weight yet,but
I'm really enjoying the pool shooting side effect.
I hate to get back on the old road of years gone by,but I'm enjoying
this. My question for the group is none ,it's just that these pills
make me hyper and talkative and ready to gamble. Now, where'd I put that
beer. Too much more of this and I'll be exclaiming, " I'm BACK."

I don't do drugs but alchohol calms my nerves during a tournament or
"jellybean" match. I will drink one "jack daniels & coke" an hour. As long
as I don't drink more than one an hour I am focused and don't get sloppy. I
can hang for 10-12 hours and all is well.

Of course I learned the one an hour rule the hard way and went home a few
times with an empty "jellybean" jar.

Speed? I love when my opponent is speeding away. They sit in the chair all
jittery and anxious to get to the table. Sometimes they walk around in
circles or back and forth. I love it when they play me for jellybeans,
lots of them! Of course I know that they have the ability of stamina over
me, so I just have to pace myself and play real, real sloooowwww. This
usually drives them nuts and when they get a shot, usually a kick or bank,
they just jump right up to the table and fire away. usually they are in
such a hurry they forget to aim or even stroke. I love it when that
happens!

GEEZUM CREEPS, Doug!
Why would you want to dangle that stick of dynamite in front of these
hungrier than thou pool aficionados?

Just bring your stash down here to New Orleans. The guys that use those

REALLY REALLY REALLY, I am just kidding and this is directed at the rest of
RSB as Doug already knows I am just joking.

But seriously, all of us wannabees are searching for the "secret" to improve
our game and now yo ucome online to tell us it is in the form of a pill.
Keep us posted as to how your win ratio CONTINUES. Let us know how your

That's really strange, I have found that only smoking black tar heroin improves
my game. Dilaudit works almost as well, but only if I drink a 6 pack of Schlitz
Ice pounders with it.

A lot of the league players I know smoke it. I love when they go for a toke

opponents would be stoned

Doug, your prescription bottle would be your "get out of jail, free" card.

I just hope that the newbies to our sport don't think that taking drugs to
enhance their performance is an acceptable practice in the pool scene. Over
the years I have seen many players with exceptional potential ruin their
prospective futures, because they thought that some wonder drug would
improve their playing ability.

Over time, drugs will destroy any ability/skill you may have acquired!

I've seen both sides of this. At one event I played a relatively famous
player who was most obviously stoned to the gills. It made him fearless
and/or just made him not care. He fired at shots that I don't believe any
sane person would have shot. Of course, some of them went and probably
confirmed, in his own whacked out mind that he was "playing better." The
other side is playing a speed freak. As Mike said, it's great to play these
guys. Just take your time and they'll practically throw their pool cue at
the table from the chair (if they've actually managed to sit down in one) in
their rush to shoot.

I personally don't believe drugs or alcohol will improve your pool playing
in any way.

The long term effects of taking drugs as we all know is not good. I believe
that taking these pills can develop into a mental crutch (not to mention the
physical risks). A person could begin to believe that they can't play well

Phentermine is one half of the now discredited Phen-Fen combo which was linked
to heart valve problems and numerous deaths. If you take it while also being
treated for hypertension. and throw alcohol in the mix you could be setting
yourself up for serious trouble.

I cannot recommend illicit drugs as performance enhancers in pool or any other
sport. The risks associated with their use and the danger of dependence and
addiction are too great.Every time someone uses hard drugs they are dancing
with death.

Alcohol is another big problem. If used in moderation it's ok for a lot of
people, but a hell of a lot of people use alcohol as a crutch in the IMO
mistaken belief that it will improve their game. Of all the drugs the number
one killer and destroyer of lives is alcohol and it should be treated with
great respect and caution.

I don't mean to sound puritanical. I drink beer and wine and the occasional
cocktail.
I also enjoy a few good tokes of pot once in a while. (IMO marijuana is the
safest of all psychoactive substances.) But that's where I draw the line. But
when I'm playing in a tournament the only thing I do is Coke as in Coca-Cola,
or water.

Doug,

I know a lot of people who have lost weight safely and successfully with the
Atkins diet. They have not had problems with elevated cholesterol or blood
pressure. And because the diet allows them to eat all the meat, fish, and fats
they could want, they don't feel deprived. You may want to pick up a copy of
"Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution". BTW, for what it's worth Ozzy "the madman"
Osbourne swears by it.

Hell, maybe one day when I get rid of that lying ass "magic mirror", I'll
realize I need to go on that diet myself ! :-)

Jerry, and this is just my personal opinion: Marijuana is an insidious
drug. It is deceiving. It is a de-motivator. Because you can't overdose
it and it doesn't kill you quickly and generally it makes you laid back
rather than aggressive, makes it a Trojan horse.

When you rob a person of motivation, you destroy their ability to fulfill
dreams. They can still dream but fulfilling the dreams is another story.

SOME people are able to remain motivated in their jobs and personal lives
while regularly using weed. Most cannot. Again that is just a personal
opinion and observation.

We also don't know a lot about how marijuana affects the brain and in
general don't know a great deal about this passive drug. On the surface
Cannabis looks benign and harmless but therein lies the real danger.
APPROACH WITH CAUTION. :-)

Joey Aguzin

I tried the Atkins diet but thought it was too severe. I was unwilling to
take the vitamins and alcohol does not mix well with this diet so it may not
sit well with you. The complete lack of carbos made me very weak. I had to
stop.

There is a fella by the name of Dr. Weil who is an MD but his specialty is
nutrition. http://www.pathfinder.com/drweil/

He recommends staying away from 'bad' carbos.

Bad Carbos--potatoes(or anything high in starch), processed flower, and
processed sugar.

What does this mean? No french fries, no baked potato, no potato chips,
nothing with processed flower--snack crackers, most modern bread, pretzels,
cookies, cakes, anything with modern processed flower. Processed
sugar--candy, many desserts, regular soda pop(as opposed to diet), anything
with processed sugar.

Here is the good part. What can you eat? All meats. All dairy products. All
fruits and vegetables. Whole grain beads. Nuts--peanuts, cashews, assorted
nuts--whatever you like--nuts are loaded with nutrition. Sardines are also
highly recommended for their omega fatty acids--I love them but then again I
like anchovies on my pizza.

If you want to give yourself a kick start spend the first couple weeks
writing down everything you eat. It will really open your eyes. After you
get down to the weight you want you can bring the some of the 'bad' carbos
back into your diet in a limited amount.

I have great respect for Dr. Weil and have followed his advice. I designed
my diet around his beliefs and have dropped 15% of my body weight with a
minimum amount of discipline. It has to be a diet you like in order to work
over the long term. I do excersize on a regular basis. I drink beer. I like
it and have not restricted it. This was an important part of the long term
viability of the diet.

I just had my annual physical with a total blood work and my numbers are all
better. All of my blood numbers were better, cholesterol was lower, blood
pressure down, triglycerides down, everything.

I am back to my high school weight(that was 22 years ago) and I do not feel
deprived.

I think finding a diet that works for you will also allow you to play pool
longer, more effectively, and at a higher level.

imho.

Otto

Same concept. The idea is to minimize your glycemic index. In other words,
you are attempting to slow the rate at which your body converts carbos to
sugar. Processed sugar, processed flower, and starchy foods tend to break
down very fast due to an increased surface area and the body runs at a very
high glycemic index. This drives a high level of insulin production and one
of the side effects is you are hungry all the time.

Like pasta? Cook it like those in the Mediterranean--ala dante(my spelling
probably is wrong)--undercook your pasta by American standards--the pasta
should feel firm in the center--this reduces the rate at which the pasta is
converted to sugar and therefore keeps your glycemic index at a lower level.

If you are one of those for whom type II diabetes(age and weight related)
runs in your family then a high glycemic index makes you more susceptible at
an earlier age.

If you run with this higher glycemic index you will have a stronger
appetite, crave those foods with sugar and flour, and tend to carry extra
weight.

Just my humble experience.

Otto--time to practice pool(staying on topic before the cops come)

Joey,

Some claim that cannabis use leads to "adult amotivation." The World Health
Organization report addresses the issue and states, "it is doubtful that
cannabis use produces a well defined amotivational syndrome." The report also
notes that the value of studies which support the "adult amotivation" theory
are "limited by their small sample sizes" and lack of representative
social/cultural groups.

>We also don't know a lot about how marijuana affects the brain and in

A John Hopkins study published in May 1999, examined marijuana's effects on
cognition on 1,318 participants over a 15 year period. Researchers reported "no
significant differences in cognitive decline between heavy users, light users,
and nonusers of cannabis." They also found "no male-female differences in
cognitive decline in relation to cannabis use." "These results ... seem to
provide strong evidence of the absence of a long-term residual effect of
cannabis use on cognition," they concluded.

Since 1969, government-appointed commissions in the United States, Canada,
England, Australia, and the Netherlands concluded, after reviewing the
scientific evidence, that marijuana's dangers had previously been greatly
exaggerated, and urged lawmakers to drastically reduce or eliminate penalties
for marijuana possession.

You can try pills, fad diets, or whatever. The only good healthy way to
lose weight and keep it off PERMANENTLY is to eat healthy and EXERCISE.
Just as in pool, to get to where you want to be, there are no shortcuts.
You just have to work hard, and make sacrifices.

Thanks for the "reports". My opinion still remains the same and is only
based upon my personal observation. My sample market may not represent all
of society the best.

But you might find the following of some use in making your decisions.

Q: What are the long-term effects of marijuana use?
A: Findings so far show that regular use of marijuana or THC may play a role
in some kinds of cancer and in problems with the respiratory, immune, and
reproductive systems.

Cancer
It's hard to know for sure whether regular marijuana use causes cancer. But
it is known that marijuana contains some of the same, and sometimes even
more, of the cancer-causing chemicals found in tobacco smoke. Studies show
that someone who smokes five joints per week may be taking in as many
cancer-causing chemicals as someone who smokes a full pack of cigarettes
every day.(15)

Lungs and airways
People who smoke marijuana often develop the same kinds of breathing
problems that cigarette smokers have: coughing and wheezing. They tend to
have more chest colds than nonusers. They are also at greater risk of
getting lung infections like pneumonia.

Immune system
Animal studies have found that THC can damage the cells and tissues in the
body that help protect people from disease. When the immune cells are
weakened, you are more likely to get sick.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----

Q: Does marijuana lead to the use of other drugs?
A: It could. Long-term studies of high school students and their patterns of
drug use show that very few young people use other illegal drugs without
first trying marijuana. For example, the risk of using cocaine is 104 times
greater for those who have tried marijuana than for those who have never
tried it.(7) Using marijuana puts children and teens in contact with people
who are users and sellers of other drugs. So there is more of a risk that a
marijuana user will be exposed to and urged to try more drugs.

To better determine this risk, scientists are examining the possibility that
long-term marijuana use may create changes in the brain that make a person
more at risk of becoming addicted to other drugs, such as alcohol or
cocaine. While not all young people who use marijuana go on to use other
drugs, further research is needed to predict who will be at greatest risk.

when I have a big tournament to play in, I get up early and go to Starbucks
for a latte and I eat a bagel too. About an hour later, I'm racing and the
balls start flying in the pocket. My concentration level is amazing. I
understand the use of uppers.... I had my drug days long ago. At least
that's what I claim since you can't get arrested for abusing caffeine and
nicotine....

Many of the players at the poolhall I hang out at smoke marijuana and many
go for harder substances. But, after knowing Keith McCreedy, I realize that
it's never led to a positive end. I don't look down on the use of pot, I
just don't believe that you can honestly earn money on the table while
stoned.

This advice holds for all self-prescribed drugs. One of the worst combinations
is tylenol (or other acetomenephin) and alcohol. If taken regularly, this will
kill you in about a year. The combination kills liver cells. Aspirin and
alcohol is almost as bad.

I work with someone here who had fairly regular headaches, so he got in the
habit of taking tylenol every night to sleep. He also liked single-malt
scotch. He was not a big drinker, it took him a while to finish off a $300
bottle of hootch. But the combination killed his liver in about a year. He
had a liver transplant, which was successful, but while he was on the waiting
list, his kidneys also failed. So now he must go have dialysis every couple of
days. He is in his mid 50's. Before he was active, he rode a bicycle to work,
ran, swam, and played tennis regularly. Now he can't travel, or go to
scientific meetings. He was a group leader (he managed a small research group
of 5 or 6 people), but now he has stepped down because he can't be as active as
necessary for that kind of position.

And all of this is just because of the combination of tylenol and alcohol. If
you ask any medical doctor, they will tell you this. But for some reason, it
isn't discussed very often otherwise, and people just don't know about it.
I've even heard people say that when they go bar hopping, they take a tylenol
or aspirin ahead of time. This is ABOLUTELY the WORST possible thing to do to
try to avoid a hangover.

I'm also a victim of self prescribed medicin on a smaller scale. I developed
hay fever allergies about ten years ago, so in the springtime and fall, when
the symptoms were worse, I took over the counter allergy pills. After a year
or so, I found that I had developed a heart rhythm problem. After I quit
taking the pills, it took several years before my EKG slowly returned to
normal.

Joey,

Alcohol is a far, far greater killer than pot and the evidence supports this
statement.
Also the "gateway theory" has been disproven by the facts. BTW the first
contact with drugs for the majority of youngsters is with alcohol so using the
same faulty logic one could make a case for alcohol as a gateway to drug abuse.
Of course the facts are that the vast majority of people who experiment with
alcohol or marijuana do not go on to abuse cocaine, heroin or amphetamines.

Finally every major study on Marijuana has concluded that it does not pose a
major threat to health, brain function, or society and has recommended that it
be decriminalized. I don't believe that pot, alcohol, or any other
psycho-active substance enhances sports performance. Nor do I believe people
should go to work or drive stoned. That having been said I don't see anything
wrong with an otherwise responsible adult relaxing at home with a joint and
some good tunes. And I certainly don't believe he or she should be locked up
for it.

I agree with you I never play pool in a tournament, league night or for money
while stoned or drunk. Soda or water is just fine with me.
