I'm specifically interested in if the economy has had an impact on the
amount of time you're playing, equipment purchases, league play,
tournament entry and travel? Are you seeing a decrease in the number of
players at the local room? Are you seeing less gambling?
What say you?

As to going further out to large cities, that idea got killed with the high
gas prices. (Although there are plenty of better players than I in the
larger cities.)
Then they cut out smoking and I smoke. I can smoke at home.
I have the same problem with winning too many games at home as well. If I
win too many, they don't return for awhile.
Basically *the* place to go is about 60 miles away. With the sharks there, I
just sit and watch them run the table on me! *Very* good players. They know
the rules. Don't cheat. Will congratulate you on good runs, etc. If I lived
in that area, I would be there quite a bit!
I'm seeing both fewer weekly tournaments and fewer of the larger
weekend tournaments around here (Chicago). Also, a couple of the
local rooms have closed down in the past year, The Green Room in
Downers Grove and Palace Billiards in Villa Park, both of which had
well attended weekly handicapped tournaments over the past 10 years.
One of our RSB tournaments was held at The Green Room. Palace
Billiards also hosted several WPBA Pro events over the years that
were shown on cable TV. The Viking Tour typically has a handful of
stops here in the Chicago area each year, and I don't think there
are any scheduled at all this season. Normally at this time of
year, you would see several weekend tournaments every week, and you
would have to choose which ones to play in.
I played in a 14.1 tournament a couple of weeks ago at Red Shoes.
In the 13-player field, there were three pros (Bobby Hunter, Jeff
Carter, and Mark Jarvis). Normally at this time of year, those guys
would have been playing in some big pro tournament somewhere.

We had one popular room here in Denver close a couple months ago. The
weekly Thursday night tourney moved to Table Steaks South and is doing
better there. Big fields with the finals being played around 3 a.m.!
Shane V.B. has been coming around and the word is he will be moving to
Ft. Collins (about 50 miles north of Denver) from South Dakota. So
that's generated lots of excitement.
I still have not re-started playing since May. No work means no money
means no pool. I'm an occasional spectator.
Bob Keller
I'm playing less, mainly since becoming a dad (so for a few years now). I
used to play 3 or 4 times a week for several hours each time, playing league
here and there, etc. Now I'd say I average once a week. Sometimes I play
twice, but sometimes none. I'm not complaining because I've traded
recreational time for time with the family. I *think* that when the kids
get older, I will have more time to play again but I'm not sure about that
one... :-)

Ron do you know what the deal is with Carter and Hunter hanging around
Chicago for so long?

Well it is the closest mecca to me, that is Salem, Oregon and "Jammers
Tavern". But further away is Portland, Oregon and certain places up there
where a few pros regularly enter the weekly tournaments. I think one is
called the Cadillac Bar in the Vancouver, Washington area? (I've never been
to that one.)
> Yeah, I almost went to that tournament.
I was out in two. I don't quite have my sea legs yet when it comes
to 14.1. Maybe next time.

Yeah, John Lavin told me about that. He said you played really well.

No. I think they are both from Wisconsin, right? It isn't unusual
for Wisconsin players to move down here because there are more
rooms, more tournaments, more leagues, more players, more action
with road players, etc. I think Jeff Carter has lived here off and
on for the past 20 years.
BTW, Mark Jarvis won that tournament.

I believe you are speaking of Ron Lincoln. Nice guy and he seems to
have been around. Yes, pretty strong 9-ball player. I believe he
like to play one-hole a bunch too.
I suppose you could call him a tall guy, but not compared to me! ;-)
Bob Keller
I guess the answer is lazy. I don't have to practice poker too much.
I have to practice pool and then I still suck. <g> The nice thing
about a poker tournament is you are always in action. In a pool
tournament I play one match and then sit for an hour or two then play
again and sit for 3 hours.

Jeff Carter lives in Beloit. He is retired from the pro-circuit and
pretty much just plays tournaments in the area. He plays at the Carom
Room in Beloit a lot. When he was in Madison and when we had a pool
hall he used to play a lot of 50 no-count 14.1 with the locals. He
would still win a lot of those matches.
Pat
Well, I'll tell ya. My boy turned 7 a coupla weeks ago He's now (amid
much pissing and moaning about it feeling uncomfortable) :D playing pool
with 2 hands, mostly off the rail, and doing really well for a little kid.
It warms my heart to hear him ask me to play some pool with him. It will
yours too.
Oh and the little bastidge beat me at a game of darts this weekend too
(spotted him 2 marks/number in Cricket)
It only gets better bubba! Enjoy the ride.

How great would it be if playing with your child IS ALSO playing pool
instead of playing with princess dolls and finger paint? (not that those
things aren't fun...) :-)

I play mostly at home now. There for awhile it looked like pool in
the Denver metro was taking it's last gasps, and we're still pretty
much overlooked by the various tours, (who wants to come all the way
out here?). Recently, the Colorado Cue Club has re-opened under new
ownership, so I guess I need to try to get out more.
RSB hasn't been much more lively. I feel like I haven't posted more
than 3 or 4 times since since Fast Larry took over and I'm still the
2nd overall poster behind only Lou??? Wow!
I also just discovered that when using Windows Live Mail with Win 7,
and Motzarella I can't access RSB. Why can I access rec.sport.golf OK
but not rec.sport.billiard? Oh well, with Larry still around I won't
be posting much anyway.
I'm accessing RSB with Windows 7 and Thunderbird.
Jim
Is he still around?? I must have my filters about perfect now because I
hadn't noticed.

I'll have you know I'm in demand and very hard to get these days. Of
course that should be Zoo Zoo as in ' I escaped from the Zoo Zoo'...
my wife is thinking of getting a Mr Squiggles and giving me away. She
claims it'll be better behaved and not eat as much (which could well
be true).

Having said all that, I was getting in a bit of a rut / bored, but now I
love to play when I get the chance. The down side is I suck even more
than before when I played regularly :-(

You should... apparently ol' Deano has what they call 'selective
memory'. Or maybe oldtimer's disease...:-)
I think this may call for a challenge match the next time we get
together... is Jerry P. still around to put up a cue for the winner -
a PR20 would be nice?

Dean

I talked to him once about a problem* with one of my cues but I don't
really know him at all. We should get ol' Hank to intervene - I wonder
if he still has that one they scammed Jerry out of when he and the
late Slim had a challenge match?
* Jerry makes great cues but I couldn't get the two halves apart on
one I bought from Amazing Grace Nakamura. Took 3 strong guys at the
same time to finally get it apart. No damage to the cue.
