Final Notes & Results: NCAA Point Pool

The big winner in this year's point total pool is...

Bucky Ransdell

Bucky scored 2921 points and received his UCLA squeeze bottle in a private
ceremony attended by my wife and Curtis "War is" Hill. There will be a
seperate article detailing the "Meeting of the Gods" in a bit.

Bucky chose all 4 final teams and lost no teams until the third round.
That's how to win the pool. Here are his selections:

North Carolina
Duke
Kansas
UNLV
Arizona
St. John's
Oklahoma State
Arkansas

The highest score possible was:

497 * Duke
452 Kansas
426 North Carolina
398 UNLV
388 Arkansas
311 St. John's
301 Temple
298 Seton Hall

Total = 3071

Previous year's totals were:
1990 3336
1989 3087
1988 2981

Bucky's score was 95%, which is historically quite high.

Second place went to Mannie Lowe, another net.god. This just proves that
my pool is a better judge of talent than ChaZ'. Third place was held by
Jeff Sagarin's rankings. Maybe he knows something after all.

Win Strickland wins the "Richard 'T-Bone' Burton prize" of a Colorado Buffalo
squeeze bottle for the highest entry that did NOT include UNLV (I came in
second). I'll be sending Win's e-mail address to Richard so that they can
work out the transfer of the prize.

The "Gary Newell" something from Arizona that's not a cactus prize for being
closest to Gary's score without improving on it goes to Matt Nelson. Both
players scored 2244 points. They did not, however, have the same entry.
Again, I'll send Matt's address to Gary to coordinate the transfer.

I still haven't factored in the bonus points. That'll have to be done in
a seperate posting. I'll have some comments on that as well.

Here are the final standings. A person picking Duke will be highlighted by
having a 1 in the 'T' category.

It will be an official "Tucson Skyline" T-shirt - assuming the guy wants
it - all I need is the size...

GaRy, you dolt, I was trying to win *your* stupid prize. What other reason
could I have had for picking Arizona in my final eight? Who knew that
there would be someone out there who could be *exactly* as screwed up as
you?

> Need I say more?

Well, I wasn't going to do this, but . . . if anyone wants a good chuckle,
mosey over to talk.politics.misc and catch gARy's enlightened opinions on
getting your net access yanked by system administrators. He left out all
the good stuff, of course.

Anyway, does this mean that for the next year, all sigs must include the
ranking in the NCAA pool, so that the opinions can be properly weighed?

Like why you left off everyone ahead of you? No. But you probably will.

From private mail, I know that T-Bone and I are spending our precious
bodily energies on more productive pursuits. And I know Trent was
just trying to make the last three digits of his score match. I have
no explanation for the performance of CHAz, Hill, et al.

What did you expect? "My Story by Gary Newell"?? I just find the topic to be
near and dear to my heart....

oooooooh - did I hit a sore spot James? calm down now - I beat you and
your fellow UCLA fans to a pulp in front of the entire world - now go away.
Next year, when I take this thing serious I *will* end up in the top
20 - bet on it.....

My God what a pathetic display of whining you guys are giving! So I
made you look like fools - so what? Come on guys - it was all in good

And so we are given an interesting insight into the source code of GArY
NewEll: everyone except him == 'UCLA fan'.

For the record, the only good Bruin is a dead Bruin, except for an
occassional one carrying pom-poms. I might be able to say the same thing
about the Wildcats if someone will ever introduce Nair to Tuscon. (At this
point, gaRy's pattern recognition algorithm will spit out something about
"immaturity" and "get a life".)

That must be the state motto of Arizona. Either that or "Stiffness is next

I really have to make a public apology to James - having given him what is
probably the biggest insult that one can give (calling him a Ruins fan). I
was wrong - he is not a Bruins fan and I should never have tarnished his
reputation with such an attack....

Yes, and if you selected the Texas Longhorns as one of your Final
Four teams, your sig must include that fact, too, Jim. That's a
valuable bit of information when you're trying to guage someone's
thought process. (No, I didn't do that, but I know someone who did.
What's worse, he exhibited the questionable presence of mind to
actually admit, after Texas was eliminated, that he'd done this!)
