My thoughts on the game: Sheryl Swoopes looks awesome. Both teams
looked good in stretches. Sue Wicks and Tamika Whitmore were
impressive for New York, but the Liberty needed VJ and she never got it
going.

Before you buy.
On a somewhat related note, I was happy to see that a certain
"untalented" player going by the name of Kara Wolters led the
league in FG% during the preseason and that one Vanessa Nygaard
was tied with Cynthia Cooper for FT% - especially considering
that the Fire only played two preseason games for whatever reason
(can someone explain that to me?).

Tammy Jackson played very well also, I thought. Maybe since the Comets were
playing New York, she thought it was playoff time? <G>
Also, you are right that it was a great game to feature on NBC. Even though
both teams were a little rusty at the start, the level of play was
excellent. I suspect Tamika Whitmore will be getting more minutes with
which to "play herself into shape." <laugh>

And what about that Venus Lacey-Monica Lamb matchup? Can't wait
to watch the two of them go at in July - same Bat time, same Bat
channel.
Really, though I'm just happy the season has officially started!!

Of course, one game does not an MVP season make, but she was
definitely the star of the day. For anyone who missed the
telecast, though, Cynthia Cooper became the first 2000-point
scorer in WNBA history.

I figured you'd mention Sue's performance, as you admire her
style. Even though the WNBA season is officially underway,
however, college players continue to celebrate birthdays. Since
you are a fan of the Fighting Illini, I trust you'll join me in
wishing Illinois's Shavonna "The Heart is a Lonely" Hunter well
as she turns 19 this 30th of May. Courtney Gilmore of the SMU
Mustangs is 20. Sue Williams of the WNBL's Perth Breakers hits
the quarter-century mark. Also born in 1975 was former Colorado
Lady Buff Erin Scholz, who has a site devoted to her exploits.
Wonder what it is about those 6-letter proper nouns that begin in
"S" and end in "z" that inspires fans of Mountain Standard Time
hoops to create web pages...
Back to the Liberty - at least Becky Hammon wasn't shy about
shooting and driving, though I only recall one shot she made.
Wonder if her husband refers to the former Western Kentucky Lady
Topper Lunsford as "Shea, Ma Honey".

I made a mental remark about that one too, Kimmo :-) ... nice, n'est-ce pas?
Other observations:
I wasn't terribly impressed with Houston, but far less so with the Lib as a
whole. I thought Wicks was fine, and Tamika was highly impressive. As she gets
back into shape (I hope, I hope), her game will improve aritmetically. I
mock-shudder to think of how good she can be if she drops 35 pounds!
I said it in '97 and I'll say it again ... Swoopes is an awesome talent - still
hard to believe they found someone who can create a "shadow" for her to stand
in.

Speaking of the box score - anyone notice that Bibby was listed
twice: once as a guard and once as a center. LOL. That's one
short center! Not to mention the talent it takes to play two
positions at the same - especially when passing the ball to
yourself. Perhaps they should try "Mahoney" next time.
