The Sapphires, the Australian Young Women team (17-20yo),
just beat both the Japan and S Korea Senior teams.
maybe some names to look out for ...
Hollie Grima,
Laura Summerton,
Shelley Hammonds,
Jessica Mahoney.....
saw also that Suzie Batkovic has signed in Europe for A$150K
(~US$80K)
so she may not try for WNBA next year.
Looks like the Sapphires are a good bet to win the Four Nations
International Tournament. Here's an article from _The Age_, an
Australian paper:

Sapphires shine in China
SYDNEY, May 31 AAP
Published: Friday May 31, 6:12 PM
The Australian Young Women's basketball team showed this week's
one-point upset over Japan was no fluke by ousting the national senior
team for the second time in four days at Yi Chun, China overnight.
The national 20 years and under side dubbed the Sapphires sealed its
third straight win in the Four Nations International Tournament by
thrashing Japan 81-62.
It followed the youngsters' 78-77 win over Japan on Monday.
Former WNBL Rookie of the Year Laura Summerton led the Sapphires with
27 points and five rebounds while Holly Grimma had 12 points and 13
rebounds and Shelley Hammonds 17 points.
Australia belied its young age to out-rebound Japan 47-25 and shot 63
per cent from the field while limiting the hosts to just 41 per cent.
It was a remarkable effort from a team armed with players as young as
16-year-old Emma Randall.
Australia - who also defeated the Korean senior team 77-74 on
Wednesday - will complete its round robin games against China tomorrow
before the finals on Sunday.
China is the only team the Sapphires haven't beaten in the tournament
to date.

actually they beat Japan again, then lost to S. Korea
and have 1 more game.
Tired Sapphires can't match Koreans 1/6/2000
The Australian Young Womenıs Basketball Team have had
their three-game winning streak in the Four Nations
International Tournament in China snapped after being
downed by the Korean Senior Women's Team, 87-72, on
Saturday.
For Australia, Laura Summerton had 25 points and 10
rebounds and Shelley Hammonds added 13 points and 5
boards as both continued the good form they have shown
throughhout the tour. Hollie Grima also continued to impress
with a double-double 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Sapphires Head Coach Mark Wright whilst disappointed with
the loss still saw an upside.
"The team continues to gain valuable experience against
senior National teams," Wright said after the game. "It has
been a great learning experience for all players and provides
a great starting point for our campaign to progress to the
World Championships².
The Australians tomorrow will play the winner of Saturday's
other game between China and Japan before heading home
to Australia on June 3 to prepare for games against a visiting
Washington University team. The Sapphires will
then participate in the World Championship Qualifications to
earn a spot in the World Championships in July 2003 in
Dubrovnik, Croatia.
How good is the University of Washington?
The Huskies advanced to the third round of the National Women's
Invitation Tournament, finishing with a 19-12 record after losing to
eventual tourney champ (and league rival) Oregon. Before the NWIT,
Washington was ranked 84th among the 321 Division I teams (per latest
RPI poll available on espn.com), so the squad is better than about
three-fourths of all major USA colleges' teams.
Here's part of a release from the University of Washington site:

ok, thanks
the oz team (as the AIS) played Div I teams at about that level
last november, I think, finishing with an even record.
So with a further year of experience, I would predict 3-2 or 4-1 to the oz team
