Before we wish y'all a Happy New Year and officially enter '02, there's a few bits of unfinished business remaining that we, belatedly but fondly, offer up as ALL-TORCH 2001:
(The Real) ROOKIE OF THE YEAR Svetlana Abrosimova --- It was no surprise media darling Jackie Stiles "stole" this one from the corrupt establishmentarian panel; but anyone with enough intelligence to look at the cold hard facts can easily see that JS, at BEST, deserved the bronze in this category. It is a VERY close call between Sveta and Lauren for the title, but the former was able to contribute more to her team, without melodrama, facing much greater obstacles, for less cash. The nod, therefore, goes to agent Abrosimova, "from Russia with love." :-)
Besides … Jackson's getting another award.
(The Real) COACH OF THE YEAR Anne Donovan --- Rebounded from a 1-10 start to land in the championship finals, what does one have to do to win an award these days??!!!
(The Real) MVP Yolanda Griffith --- Hard to argue with Leslie winning this one, I'll admit, but I simply can't bear it. Let's flashback a few years to the spring of 1999: two … errr … "struggling" teams, Washington and Sacramento, have first and second picks in the draft, respectively. Washington "short-sightedly" grabs Chamique if-we-don't-make-the-playoffs-you-can-fire-us-all Holdsclaw, because they just haaaaad to have her - what a star, what a star! Sonny Allen, in the one intelligent move of his coaching career, is "left" with Griffith. In short order the Monarchs become a powerful force in the west. Three years later, Washington is still sweeping out the cellar. YG may actually be the best player in the league, and deserves more credit than she receives. Torch Awards Committee to the rescue!
MHP (Most Huggable Player) Kara Wolters --- but perhaps our ace at Notre Dame, Chris Biebel, will be good enough to tell Ruth Riley that she was an extraordinarily strong challenger to "Karabear's" normally impregnable lock on this category.
MOC (Most Outstanding Cheekbones) Nikki McCray --- who wishes us to inform her (lack of) competition that she is not only growing bored but running out of space on her mantelpiece, and that is the REAL impetus for her off-season "relocation."
BLL (Best Looking in Leather) Lauren Jackson --- For anyone who missed ESPN's telecast of the draft: the order of the selection was NOT the highlight <g>. Wish I could get my hands on that @#$%^&* rookie card!!!
Name Best Lending Itself to a Song Parody Eva Nemcova --- before I publish it, anyone care to hazard a guess??
Most Annoying Figure in Women's Basketball Val Ackerman --- Surely, no comment necessary
Worst ESPN Commentator Nancy Blabberman-Cline --- I'd offer some color commentary here, but I'm certain that she's too busy talking (about anything other than the game itself) to allow me a word in edgewise.
Best Appearance by a Female Hoopster in a Music Video Carolyn Moos, in Michael Jackson's "Cry." --- Yeah, yeah, yeah … any opportunity to give her an award … I know … busted. What's worse, though, is that I haven't yet managed to tape it. :-(
Best AND Most Attractive Backcourt in the NCAA Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi, UConn --- Fortunately I was able to combine two categories into one and award two individuals a double honor they both surely deserve. Amazing how far a little creative accounting goes. :-) The Awards Committee does, however, wish to make Ms. Taurasi aware of how much better she looks with hair down. Diana, please be advised; Kelly Mazzante is on your heels.
Quote of the Year Geno Auriemma, "Who else could lose Svetlana Abrosimova, Shea Ralph, and Kelly Schumaker, and still be ranked #1?" --- And all the competition could do was grumble.
Worst Newsgroup Thread of the Year Where's the (Amy) Love? --- Where's the self-restraint?!
Most Adorable Poster to this Newsgroup Heidi A. --- The Committee wishes to advise her that she may not receive a statue on time, however, as we are unsure about the spelling of her last name. :-)
Least Adorable Poster to this Newsgroup Three guesses, sportsfans…
… And while we're on the subject of things horrific, the selection committee wishes to ask everyone here to shift gears and wax serious, joining us in observing a moment of silence for one of the classiest, most talented, not to mention strikingly beautiful, female basketball players, and athletes in general, tragically lost to us in this dark year of 2001:
Corissa Yasen
Our thoughts and prayers continue to go out to Don Yasen and his family for their tragic loss.
Worst Newsgroup Thread of the Year Where's the (Amy) Love? --- Where's the self-restraint?! _______________________________ I'd give my vote to the thread "Distaste For Orange" where some guy wrote:
"...but, don't worry, redneck, I will permit you the last word here, nonetheless (in your case, MUCH less), but it won't change the fact that you're a s***head. Evidently you were born one and you'll die one ... soon, I hope."
Interesting awards field this year. I agree wholeheartedly with you on MVP (Yolanda G.) & MOC (Nikki McCray), and your picks on Best AND Most Attractive Backcourt in the NCAA (Bird & Taurasi) are impeccable. However, you really blew it on the MHP (Most Huggable Player). Even to the point where I think your pick of Kara Wolters is actually an intentional mockery of the category. Surely you should have considered Becky Hammon, Katie Douglas, Lisa Harrison, Stephanie White-McCarty, Annie Burgess, and Svetlana Abrosimova for this most coveted honor. Actually, of that bunch -- just going on the feeling of who I would want to hug the most -- I think the edge would go to Annie Burgess. (Great pic of her in the December issue of Women's Basketball.)
In the separate category of Most Marriageable Player Who's Already Married, it's Stephanie White-McCarty for the third year in a row.
awww thanks whitetorch. can you believe that i missed the katie smith interview?! i watched about a half an hour of the game and i realized that it was in penn state so they wouldn't interview katie and then turns out that they just called her!!! jeeze, what did she have to say.

Pheraphs to work in L.A.? Anne is the best.

Agree. Black tiger is an hurricane.

Where is "Motown style" gone?

Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't McCray also win the Most Outstanding Cheeks award as well?

Well, Jim, there are probably quite a lot of fans wishing they could hug "Princess" Lisa as she turns 31 today. The Tennessee alumna has had quite a few Aussie teammates while playing with the Phoenix Mercury. Narelle Lindsay has not been in the WNBA, but the Adelaide Lightning veteran is now 23. Karen Dalton, at last report an assistant with the Sydney Panthers, celebrates No. 41.
Born in 1980 were Eastern Michigan Eagle Liz Okonkwo and former N.C. State Wolfpack Woman Christen Greene. Finally, Sacramento State's Sydney Gatson blows out 21 candles, as does Ije Agba of the Maryland Terrapins.

Plenty of Becky as well, including the cover photo.
> In the separate category of Most Marriageable Player Who's Already Married, > it's Stephanie White-McCarty for the third year in a row.
Well, her sister Stacey is (as far as I know) not yet spoken for. I caught Stacey and her Illinois State teammates in action Saturday. The Redbirds fell behind by a 16-2 count, but rallied to take a 51-48 lead before allowing the host Indiana State Sycamores to score the final nine points for a 57-51 victory. Stacey scored 13 points to tie teammate Sharon Blade for Redbird honors as Illinois State dropped to 2-8. The hosts rose to 5-5 in both schools' Missouri Valley Conference opener.
The game was the second half of a doubleheader, and the stands were not cleared of the debris left by those spectators who departed after the men's contest. At $2 a general-admission ticket, however, the price was hard to beat. With the money saved, we were able to dine afterward at the Beef House. Reportedly, that restaurant was where Lin Dunn took Stephanie when Dunn was recruiting the future Purdue great.
Incidentally, in case you missed it, Steph is in the background of one of the Michele Timms photos. And so we return to the subject of Australians...

You don't get a vote - one of the few circumstance where the good guys triumph. Read the backstory, the history and maybe you'll see the light.

Dude, Becky's a great looking girl, but WAY too made up (cosmetologically speaking) in the photo shoot of Women's Basketball. I would have loved to have seen the mag be a little gutsy and show her in a more natural, no make-up light.
>Incidentally, in case you missed it, Steph is in the background of >one of the Michele Timms photos.
No, I didn't miss it. In fact, it was the first thing I noticed in the magazine, and I believe it elicited an audible "yelp!" from my mouth.
