Karl Malone scored 32 points and shut down David Robinson as the
Utah Jazz again smothered the San Antonio Spurs, 105-75, to take
a 2-1 lead in their Western Conference semifinal series.
Jeff Hornacek scored 10 of his 17 points in a pair of decisive
third-quarter bursts for the Jazz, who limited the Spurs to 75
points for the second time in the series and are allowing just
75.5 points per game in their last four post-season contests.
Game Four is Sunday night at Salt Lake City.
"They were very physical with us," Spurs coach Bob Hill said.
"They put us on our heels and basically the game was over. We
were very apologetic, we didn't fight back, we didn't get dirty.
They told us what they were going to do in the paper. They
called our bluff. They put it in the paper and then they did it
and we didn't respond."
Robinson, guarded by the shorter but heavier Malone for much of
the game, managed just 11 points. He shot just 4-of-10 from the
field and 3-of-9 from the foul line. Robinson scored just three
points in the second half, when the Spurs were held to just 33.
"This is crazy," Robinson said. "It was a time when we had a
good opportunity in here and today wasn't an example of good
basketball. They're looking good and we haven't scored. We
have to figure a way to put the ball in the basket a lot better
than we have been."
San Antonio has been held to its second-lowest playoff total in
losses in Games One and Three. Utah was limited to a playoff
record low 77 points in losing Game Two.
Malone scored 21 points in the first half and held Robinson to
eight as the Jazz opened a 51-42 lead. He and Hornacek scored
four points apiece in a 10-2 run that opened the third quarter
and gave the Jazz a 61-44 lead with 7:17 left in the period.
"I haven't played really good since this series started and I
think sometimes you guys (the media) think I should change my
whole routine," Malone said. "I haven't changed it 11 years and
I'm not going to start changing just because it's the playoffs."
Hornacek had a free throw, 20-footer and three-pointer in an
11-4 burst that closed the quarter and gave the Jazz an 83-58
bulge. Utah shot 72 percent (13-of-18) from the field in the
period and held San Antonio to 29 percent (5-of-17).
The Jazz never trailed by less than 22 points thereafter and
opened their largest lead at 103-70 on a short jumper by Howard
Eisley with 3:45 to go.
Eisley scored 14 points and Chris Morris added 12 for Utah,
which shot 53 percent (43-of-81) from the field and held a 40-34
rebounding advantage. All-Star point guard John Stockton had
just six points and seven assists.
"We shot the ball well today, buit I think one of the things we
did is I thought our guys came out a lot more alive and had a
lot more intensity defensively," Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. "I
think if we come out and play with a great deal of intensity
then we shoot the ball a lot better than if we go out and just
try and go through the motions. Then we're not able to compete
against this team."
Sean Elliott scored 17 points and Vinny Del Negro added 15 for
the Spurs, who committed 19 turnovers. Forward Chuck Person
was ejected for arguing late in the third quarter.
"If we don't run, put a little pressure on them, get in the open
court and play our style, obviously we're at a big
disadvantage," Del Negro said. "It started in the first quarter
and continued throughout the game."
Malone scored 16 points in the first quarter, including eight in
a 14-3 run the Jazz used to take control for good. Utah held a
32-20 lead after one period.
