Chris Morris scored 25 points and a stifling defense held David
Robinson to 11 points as the Utah Jazz routed the San Antonio
Spurs, 101-86 to take a 3-1 lead in their Western Conference
semifinal series.
Karl Malone added 22 points and was 10-for-10 from the free
throw line for the Jazz, who travel to San Antonio for Game Five
on Tuesday.
Robinson, who was scoreless in the second half, was just 2-of-3
from the field and 7-of-10 from the line before fouling out with
4:15 remaining in the fourth quarter. Sean Elliott led San
Antonio with 22 points and Chuck Person added 17.
The Spurs used a 15-1 run that bridged the third and fourth
quarters to draw within 83-78 with 11 minutes remaining. But
the Jazz answered with a 16-2 burst that put the game out of
reach.
The Jazz remained unbeaten in five home contests and have yet to
allow San Antonio more than 88 points in any of the four games.
The Spurs shot just 46 percent (29-of-63) from the field and
attempted just nine three-pointers.
"We are not shooting the ball very well," Spurs coach Bob Hill
said. "Utah is playing great basketball right now and you have
to give them credit. All of the things that are important this
time of the season are clicking. We have our backs to the wall,
we have to go home and win, come back and win and go home and
win again. Utah is playing great basketball."
Morris made 11-of-14 shots, including 3-of-4 from three-point
range. John Stockton added 13 points and 10 assists but
committed six turnovers. The Jazz backcourt of Stockton and
Hornacek grabbed 11 rebounds while Malone and Morris combined to
grab 10.
"We can't look too far ahead," Morris said. "We got to think
about the game that is coming up and try to play them a
different way because we know that they are going to come out
and change things."
"We were aggressive in the beginning of the ball game, and of
course Chris Morris had a tremendous game for us," said Jazz
coach Jerry Sloan. "His first half was sensational. We had to
make some tough shots down the stretch."
After a bad pass by Karl Malone led to a driving layup by Avery
Johnson that cut the lead to 83-78 with 11:00 minutes remaining,
Malone and Byron Russell sparked the decisive run.
Malone hit a layup and Russell followed with a three-pointer to
push the lead to 88-78 with 8:53 to go. Elliott hit a pair of
free throws but Stockton hit consecutive 20-foot jumper for a
12-point advantage. Malone hit a jumper and Russell added two
free throws for a 96-80 lead with 4:50 left.
Hornacek hit a free throw and Russell capped the burst with a
driving layup for a 99-80 lead with 3:43 remaining.
Utah made 6-of-12 field goal attempts in the fourth quarter
while San Antonio was 4-of-17. The Spurs were also outrebounded
11-6 in the final period.
Morris had 18 and Malone added 12 as the Jazz seized a 52-42
halftime lead.
