Yo, what's up with Paul Westphal(sp)? Remember, the coach who led Phoenix
to the Finals, then got canned when he lost half of his players to
injuries(none of which he inflicted)? With all the coaching vacancies, I
figured he'd pop up somewhere, but he hasn't. I mean, if Mike Dunleavy
can coach in the NBA, why not PW? Anyone know what he's doing?

Nope, that's Paul Westhead, former head coach of the Nuggets, Bulls and
Lakers.

You THINK? Wow, are you ever a dummy. He asked
if anyone KNEW, not if anyone wanted to post the first
rambling thought that happened to enter their head.

Westphal's still getting paid by the Suns. He'll be hired by someone
for next season. Just for the record, Westphal's firing had a lot more
to do with his inability to connect with the players, to motivate the
team, and the way he kissed Barkley's ass than it did with injuries.

For the record, Paul Westhead is the new
assistant coach for the GS Warriors.
Where Westphal is, your guess...

And the George Mason Patriots I am er...proud to say. He had us
going for awhile (we scored over 70 pts in a half several times, and over
140 in a game at least once, scored 100+ on UCLA in a loss), but he was a
pretty ruthless coach who did not in anyway cater to the talent, and who
lost starters left and right during the couple seasons he was here.

Paul Westphal is waiting out the fat contract he signed with the Suns. The
Suns, even though they fired him, are still responsible for paying him the
guarenteed contract that they had inked in 1995. However, if he gets a new
job, the Suns would not have to pay him that money. Because Westphal thinks
that he will get less money coaching than with his current contract, he is
sitting out.

Another factor in consideration: his son is currently a senior in Scottsdale,
AZ (going to my alma mater's archrival). I guess that he doesn't want to move
until his son graduates.

What do you, make this shit up?

If Paul Westphal were offered another head coaching job
in the NBA, he'd take it in a heartbeat.

Wasn't he offered the Denver job? Or was he interviewed for it?

No, although he's interviewed several times, he hasn't
been offered any NBA head coaching jobs since losing the Suns
job. It almost looked like he'd be hired at Dallas when that
job was open, but at the last minute they pulled the switcheroo.

Speculation is that his ability to motivate a team is
suspect, since even though he got to the NBA Finals one year,
he lost to Houston in the playoffs the next two years in a row,
despite being up 3-1 both times.

Some also say he was too much of a player's coach with
not enough discipline, and that he kissed Barkley's ass to
excess. Of course, nobody ever comes back with their OWN
suggestion as to just how in hell you're supposed to coach
and discipline Charles Barkley. :)

This is just plain wrong! Westphal was very disciplined with
Barkley. "If Charles shows up at 7:35 for a 7:30 tip off, he
won't start the game." Paul Westphal
